  • Urticaria is a common dermatopathy, coming under "eun-jin(隱疹) in Korean Oriental medicine. We researched sixty-two patients of urticaria who had visited the Dept of Dermatology Oriental medical hospital Dongeui universty from January 2002 to April 2004 and had taken the Oriental herb medicine as Sungmagalguntanggamibang (SGT, 升摩葛根湯加味方) for verification of voluntariness of Korean Oriental medical treatment. In our time, urticaria is tending upwards, consequently the air pollution by industrialization, patronizing of convenience food by simplification of dietary life, stress and an abuse of medicine. Especially in case of chronic urticaria we're under going hardships in elimination of it's symptoms, because it's prognosis is inferior. We inspect the effects of SGT from various viewpoints and meet with following results. Results: 1. AS amount of taking the SGT increase, the effect in taking SGT period and the condition of present time become more satisfactory. 2. As continuous Time of urticaria decrease, the effect in taking SGT period become more satisfactory. 3. Etiology of urticaria is classified into the deficiency both of qi-blood(氣血兩虛), the moisture-heat of spleen-stomach(脾胃濕熱), the heat of blood(血熱), The wind-cold(風寒), The wind-heat(風熱), spleen-stomach accumulated heat(腸胃實熱) ect. The SGT is available in this order. 4. The effect in taking SGT period connects the quality of life of after treatment and the quality of life of after treatment is improved comparing with that of before treatment. • This study was designed to assess the perception and use of weaning diets and to serve as a guideline of processed weaning diets through a survey focused on the Gwangju-Jeonnam regions. The following results were obtained. Most subjects mixed 'home-made' and 'commercial' weaning diets and considered weaning diets as 'a diet for supplementing insufficient nutrition'. The most frequently used type of weaning diet was 'a kind of gruel with vegetables or meat', followed by 'boiling powder with water' and 'grinding or crushing fruits'. Two thirds (68%) of subjects had experienced buying weaning diets, mainly a powder type. The most common reason to buy weaning diets was 'troublesome', followed by 'excellent nutrition', 'convenient to go out', and 'don't know how to make'. The following results according to factors were found. The types of provided and of weaning diets were significantly different by age; the understanding of weaning diets, by education and mothers' employment; and where to get information about weaning diets, by economic status. The highest request for developing weaning diets was a type of 'powder' and 'gruel', and the highest cooking type was 'adding boiling water', followed by 'a semi-cooking product' and 'a finished product'. 'Retort pouch' package, a 'single' package unit, and 'keeping cold' were also requested by the participants. A desirable package unit in developing weaning diets was significantly different by mother's employment; the cooking type of product, by economic status; a way to keep product, by mother's employment; and package types, by education and economic status. When weaning diets were made by environmentally friendly agriculture, 69.5% of subjects were willing to purchase them. With the increase in economic status, education, and employment rate, the use of weaning diets on the market will increase. For this reason, correct nutrition education is needed. With the increasing demand for environmentally friendly agriculture, a variety of weaning diets should be developed to meet this demand.

  • Objectives : Gwakhyangjeonggi-san (GJS) which consists of 13 herbal medicines has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders caused by common cold. This study was performed to compare GJS decoctions produced using different pressure levels for various extraction times. Methods : Decoctions were prepared by the pressure levels of $0kgf/cm^2$ (non-pressurized) or $1kgf/cm^2$ (pressurized) for 30-180 min. The extraction yield, total soluble solid content (TSSC), and hydrogen ion concentration (pH) were measured, and the contents of the nine marker compounds were determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Results : The higher pressure and longer extraction time significantly increased TSSC value, while decreased the pH value. However, only extraction time affected the extraction yield of pressurized decoction. Variation of the amounts of chemical compounds was shown in pressurized and non-pressurized decoctions during extraction time. The result of regression analysis showed that pressure and extraction time can influence to extraction yield, TSSC, pH, and the content of chemical compounds. Conclusions : This study suggests that the pressure and extraction time can significantly affect the extraction efficiency of components from GJS decoctions.

  • Objectives : Tongqiao-tang(TQT) has been commonly used for the treatment of common cold, rhinitis etc. Nowadays, TQT becomes one of the most frequently used medicines for allergic rhinitis, but the mechanism of TQT in vivo isn't investigated yet. This study was performed to investigate the effect of TQT on OVA-induced allergic rhinitis mouse model by calculating serum cytokines and IgE. Methods : 8 weeks aged male BALB/c mice were divided into three groups: the normal group, the control group and the medicated group (the TQT group). Each group was consisted of 15 mice. The TQT group was administered TQT extract orally one time a day (1g/kg) from the $1^{st}$ day of experiment till the $26^{th}$ day. The control group and the normal group were administered normal saline by the same method of the TQT group. To induce the allergic rhinitis in the control group and the TQT group, mice of each group were sensitized intraperitoneally with ovalbumin (OVA) solution at the $1^{st}$, the $7^{th}$ and the $14^{th}$ day. After then, intranasal sensitization was performed by dropping 0.1% OVA solution in nasal cavity at the $22^{th}$, the $24^{th}$ and the $26^{th}$ day. At the $27^{th}$ day, the mice were killed and the changes of interferon-${\gamma}$, interleukin-4, interleukin-5, total IgE and OVA-specific IgE were checked. Results : IFN-${\gamma}$ was increased 36% more in the TQT group than that in the control group. IL-4, IL-5, the total IgE and OVA-specific IgE were decreased in the TQT group as compared with the control group and these results were statistically significant. Conclusions : Considering the above experimental results, this study showed that TQT could reduce the allergic reaction in allergic rhinitis. Advanced studies are required to investigate the further mechanisms of TQT.

  • In the technique of Q-switching, very fast electronically controlled optical shutters can be made by using the electro-optic effect in crystals or liquids. The driver for the Pockels cell must be a high-speed, high-voltage switch which also must deliver a sizeable current. Common switching techniques include the use of vacuum tubes, cold cathode tubes, thyratrons, SCRs, and avalanche transistors. Semiconductor devices such as SCRs, avalanche transistors, and MOSFETs have been successfully employed to drive Pockels cell Q-switch. In this study, a simple driver for the Pockels cell Q-switch was developed by using SCRs, pulse transformer and TTL ICs. The Pockels cell Q-switch which was operated by this driver was employed in pulsed Nd:YAG laser system to investigate the operating characteristics of this Q-switch. And we have investigated the output characteristics of this Q-switch as a function of the Q-switch delay time to Xe flashlamp current on.

  • There is a growing consumer preference for self-medication, which has resulted in the growth of the Korean functional food market to \1.5 trillion in 2014. Functional foods that can modulate immune responses and enhance liver health are in the top 2 product-specific health functional food categories. The aim of this project was to develop and commercialize new health functional foods incorporated with Cordyceps militaris. Cordyceps genus includes about 400 species, many of which have been used as traditional medicines for many years in Asian countries. C. militaris belongs to the class Ascomycetes and has been used extensively as a crude drug and tonic food in East Asia. Owing to the various physiological activities of its main active constituent, cordyceptin, C. militaris is currently being used for multiple medicinal purposes. Recently, many studies have tried to elucidate the pharmacological mechanisms underlying the activities of Cordyceps spp., which include immune activation, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antiviral effects. After continuous attempts and research toward industrialization, C. militaris cultivated using brown rice was developed into a product by a standardized process and mass-cultivating system. It was successfully introduced into the market and was approved as a functional food ingredient for the first time in Korea. Based on this information, C. militaris containing functional food product for strengthening the immune system was released in August 2014 under the brand name "Dongchoong Ilgi." Dongchoong Ilgi is potentially beneficial for improving immune and liver functions and may enhance both the convenience and effectiveness of health functional foods taken by healthy people and patients with minor illness. In addition, the results of our study may be applicable for the development of health functional foods that could lower the risk of diseases such as the common cold and cancer.

  • The objective of this study was to find out guardians' understanding on the antibiotic use for their children under elementary school age. Survey analysis was performed on 671 questionnaire response sheets from the guardians for children ($\leq$13 years old) attending daycare centers, kindergartens, or elementary schools located in eastern part and vicinity of Seoul, Korea. Result showed that majority of the guardians did not follow right direction for the use of antibiotic medications. About 80% of the guardians discontinued or reduced dosage of the antibiotic medications if symptoms relieved, and about 66% of them administered the drug always after meal although interval was not consistent. Furthermore, only one-fifth of the guardians understood right indication of antibiotic medications that it is of no use to take antibiotics for the treatment of common cold. About 65% of the guardians participated in this study responded that they received drug information for antibiotic medications from doctors or pharmacists. However, in terms of knowledge score regarding antibiotic drug use, their score was significantly lower than that of guardians who received the information from internet or mass media. This result suggests that patients counsel is not efficiently being practiced among healthcare professionals in the region surveyed in this study. Therefore, in conclusion, it appears that community pharmacists need to be more interactive in patients counsel when they dispense antibiotic medications.
