In cognitive radio or dynamic spectrum access networks, a rendezvous represents meeting two or more users on a common channel, and negotiating to establish data communication. The rendezvous problem is one of the most challenging tasks in cognitive radio ad hoc networks. Generally, this problem is simplified by using two well-known mechanisms: the first uses a predefined common control channel, while the second employs a channel hopping procedure. Yet, these two mechanisms form a life cycle, when they simplify the rendezvous problem in cognitive radio networks. The main purpose of this paper is to point out how and why this cycle forms.
We consider three different secure broadcasting scenarios: i) Broadcast channels with common and confidential messages (BCC), ii) multi-receiver wiretap channels with public and confidential messages, and iii) compound wiretap channels. The BCC is a broadcast channel with two users, where in addition to the common message sent to both users, a private message, which needs to be kept hidden as much as possible from the other user, is sent to each user. In this model, each user treats the other user as an eavesdropper. The multi-receiver wiretap channel is a broadcast channel with two legitimate users and an external eavesdropper, where the transmitter sends a pair of public and confidential messages to each legitimate user. Although there is no secrecy concern about the public messages, the confidential messages need to be kept perfectly secret from the eavesdropper. The compound wiretap channel is a compound broadcast channel with a group of legitimate users and a group of eavesdroppers. In this model, the transmitter sends a common confidential message to the legitimate users, and this confidential message needs to be kept perfectly secret from all eavesdroppers. In this paper, we provide a survey of the existing information-theoretic results for these three forms of secure broadcasting problems, with a closer look at the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel models. We also present the existing results for the more general discrete memoryless channel models, as they are often the first step in obtaining the capacity results for the corresponding Gaussian MIMO channel models.
Beamforming techniques have been successfully utilized for traffic channels in order to solve the interference problem. However, their use for control channels has not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, a (semi-) centralized beamforming strategy that adaptively changes beam patterns and controls the total transmit power of cells is proposed for the performance enhancement of the common channel in hierarchical cell structure (HCS) networks. In addition, some examples of its practical implementation with low complexity are presented for two-tier HCS networks consisting of macro and pico cells. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated through multi-cell system-level simulations under optimistic and pessimistic interference scenarios. The cumulative distribution function of user geometry or channel quality has been used as a performance metric since in the case of common control channel the number of outage users is more important than the sum rate. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme provides a significant gain compared to the random beamforming scheme as well as conventional systems that do not use the proposed algorithm. Finally, the proposed scheme can be applied simultaneously to several adjacent macro and pico cells even if it is designed primarily for the pico cell within macro cells.
In this paper, we propose a rendezvous mechanism for cognitive radio networks. In this mechanism, no prior knowledge of wireless nodes is required and it is totally distributed. Node can simply choose one of two strategies to rendezvous with its neighbors. The main benefit of this mechanism is eliminating the use of common control channel and centralized controller.

Rendezvous is a process of two or more cognitive radio nodes gathering on the same channel at the same time for a negotiation to establish data communications. This paper discusses rendezvous issues in cognitive radio networks. It details why rendezvous is an issue in cognitive radio networks and how rendezvous works. It classifies channel access methods, and details sequence-based channel-hopping methods. It surveys existing works on blind rendezvous and compares the proposed algorithms in terms of the maximum time to rendezvous. This paper discusses the properties that an efficient channel-hopping rendezvous algorithm should have and illustrates common issues in the existing rendezvous methods. It also explains open research issues in the rendezvous area.

This paper presents a 4-channel common-cathode VCSEL driver array operating up to 6.25 Gb/s per channel for the applications of HDMI 2.0 active optical cables. The proposed VCSEL driver consists of an input buffer, a modified Cherry-Hooper amplifier as a pre-driver, and a main driver with pre-emphasis to drive a common-cathode VCSEL diode at high-speed full switching operations. Particularly, the input buffer merges a linear equalizer not only to broaden the bandwidth, but to reduce power consumption simultaneously. Measured results of the proposed 4-channel VCSEL driver array implemented in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process demonstrate wide and clean eye-diagrams for up to 6.25-Gb/s operation speed with the bias current 2.0 mA and the modulation currents of $3.1mA_{PP}$. Chip core occupies the area of $0.15{\times}0.1{\mu}m^2$ and dissipate 22.8 mW per channel.
