A central facility concept for nuclear microreactor maintenance and fuel cycle management

  • Commercial deployment of nuclear microreactors presents an opportunity for the industry to rethink its approach to manufacturing, siting, operation and maintenance, and fuel cycle management as certain principles used in grid-scale nuclear projects are not applicable to a decentralized microreactor economy. The success of this nascent industry is dependent on its ability to reduce infrastructure, logistical, regulatory and lifecycle costs. A utility-like 'Central Facility' that consolidates the services required and responsibilities borne by vendors into one or a few centralized locations will be necessary to support the deployment of a fleet of microreactors. This paper discusses the requirements for a Central Facility, its implications on the cost structures of owners and suppliers of microreactors, and the impact of the facility for the broader microreactor industry. In addition, this paper discusses the pre-requisites for eligibility as well as the opportunities for a Central Facility host site. While there are many suitable locations for such a capability across the U.S., this paper considers a facility co-located with the Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant and Savannah River Sites to illustrate how a Central Facility can leverage the existing infrastructure and stimulate a local ecosystem.

  • In Korea, the health authorities and food industry emphasize the need of sanitary food production, which in mainly resulted from the recent growing of consumer's interest in the safety of food. For the reason, development of a new alternative technology to chemicals, currently used for decontamination and disinfestation, has become and urgent task in the domestic and worldwide food industry. Furthermore, the improvement of quality and manufacturing process of processed food is a requisite for winning the competition in export fields. Irradiation technology being practically applicable in the food industry has been well established on the basis of more than 40 years of R&D work in the fields of the increasing availability of food-stuffs, sanitary food production and quarantine treatment in the food trade. The wholesomeness of irradiation foods has been officially approved in 38 countries, of which 30 countries are commercially utilizing food irradiation technology. The first commercial irradiator in Korea(18.5PBq:500k{TEX}$Ci^{60}${/TEX} Co, max. cap; 4MCi) was established at Yeoju-gur, Kyung Ki-do with the technical assistance of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in June 1987. As of 1996, thirteen irradiated food groups (over 25 items)have been domestically approved for human consumption and an industrial irradiation facility is also available.   • Cloning technology continues to capture widespread attention by the international news media and biomedical and agricultural industries. The future uses of this technology could potentially contribute to major advances in biomedical and agricultural sciences. Cloned transgenic dairy cattle possessing milk promoters directing transgenes will produce pharmaceutical proteins in their milk faster, more efficiently and less expensively than transgenic cattle created using microinjection techniques. Additionally, cloned transgenic fetuses and animals may become a source of cells, tissue and organs for xenotransplantation. Lastly, but maybe most importantly, enhanced production traits and disease resistance may be realized in animal agriculture by utilizing these new technologies. The recent advances in the cattle cloning technology are important but there are still major obstacles preventing widespread commercial use of this technology. The type of donor nucleus, recipient cytoplasm, and cloning procedures used will impact the potential number of clones produced and the uses of the technology. In addition, the new advances in cloning methodology have not improved the relatively low pregnancy rates or reduced the incidence of health problems observed in cloned offspring. These problems may require novel techniques to decipher their cause and new methods of preventing and/or diagnosing them in the preimplantation embryo. The commercial potential is enormous for cloning technology; however, little has been done to improve the efficiencies of the procedure. Improving procedural efficiencies is a critical developmental milestone especially for potential uses of cloning technology in animal agriculture.

Comparative Study of Characterizing Components and Biological Activities of Bangpungtongseong-san Formulation (방풍통성산 제제의 성분 및 생리활성 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of two different commercial Bangpungtongseong-san (BTS) extract granules (BTS-2 and BTS-3) by comparing with BTS decoction (BTS-1). The contents of characterizing components and biological activities of two different commercial BTS extract granules were compared with those of the BTS decoction. The contents of characterizing components were analyzed with HPLC. The antioxidative effects were determined by measuring 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhygrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. Also, we compared the effects on lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. The contents of five components except liquiritin and sennoside A were higher in BTS-1. The DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activity were higher in BTS-1. BTS-1 significantly inhibited lipid accumulation during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and showed stronger effects than BTS-2, BTS-3. In addition BTS-1 showed stronger inhibition effects on ROS production during differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes than BTS-2, BTS-3. These results indicate that BTS decoction has strong biological activities than commercial BTS extract granules. It is also consistent with the contents of characterizing components.

Preparation of PMMA Marbles by Film Molding Method (필름 성형법에 의한 PMMA 인조석의 제조)

  • Two commercial processing methods have been used to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) marbles; cell molding method and belt molding method. Cell molding method has low productivity and belt molding method has high equipment cost as well as high production cost. A new production method far PMMA marbles using plastic films as molds was studied in this investigation to overcome the shortcomings of cell molding and belt molding method. As plastic film molds for producing PMMA marbles, poly(vinyl acetate) film was used. A methyl methacrylate compound, which has good processability in film molding and shows good mechanical properties after curing, was prepared and used to produce PMMA marbles by film molding method. Properties of the PMMA marbles produced by film molding method were similar to, or higher than, those of commercial PMMA marbles produced by cell molding and belt molding method respectively. The film molding method is considered to have high possibility in commercial application.

Lifestyle and Costume Culture of Women As Shown in Genre Paintings of the Late Chosun Dynasty (조선후기 풍속화에 나타난 여성의 생활상과 복식문화)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the costume worn by women in daily life according to life scenes depicted in genre paintings of the late Chosan Dynasty. The sentiments and customs of the time were examined to discover how costume culture followed women's lifestyles in the late period of the Chosun Dynasty. First, according to life scenes, a field amusement type costume was the most common garment and a commercial activity type costume was the least common garment. Second, when the form of costume was examined followed by the lifestyle it depicted, the following observations were noted. Women depicted in a housework type lifestyle often wore a Minjeogori. In contrast, women appearing in a labor production type or a commercial activity type lifestyle often wore a Banhoijangjeogori with the width of the coat narrowing gradually according to the trends of the time. In the forms of Chima, the women wore a Duluchima and a Gudlchima for convenience during their work and covered a Haengjuchima over it. Third, women shown in a field amusement type, a home enjoyment type or an affection pursuit type lifestyle mainly wore a deep blue colored Chima and Hoijang or Banhoijang Jeogori. While most of the women depicted in a labor production type, a housework type or a commercial activity type lifestyle wore a natural cotton colored Jeogori and a natural cotton colored and light indigo Chima. Fourth, in the field amusement type and the affection pursuit type lifestyle, the wearing of a headdress during outings of women appeared variously influenced by the strengthening restrictions placed on the women's lives according to the ethics of Confucianism.

Comparison of Quality Traits of Thigh Meat from Korean Native Chickens and Broilers

  • The quality attributes of thigh meat from a certified meat-type commercial Korean native chicken (WoorimatdagTM, WM) and a commercial broiler (Ross, CB) raised under the same environmental conditions, were compared. One-d-old, mixedsex WM (200), and 200 broilers (Ross, CB) each were randomly assigned to floor pens (20 chickens per pen). The production stages (I, II, and III) were selected based on similar live weight. The crude fat contents of WM thigh meat were lower than those of CB. WM thigh meat contained higher stearic and arachidonic acid contents but lower palmitoleic and oleic acid contents compared to those of CB. The thigh meat color CIE $L^*$- and CIE $b^*$-values of WM were lower, but inosine-5'-monophosphate content was higher in WM than CB in whole production stages. WM thigh meat showed higher collagen content, hardness, springiness, gumminess, and chewiness than CB. In sensory evaluation, odor, taste, and overall acceptance were higher while color was lower in WM. Based on these results, it can be concluded that even if commercial broilers are raised under the same environmental conditions as WM, the unique quality attributes of WM thigh meat are distinctively unique.

Effect of the Adding of Flammulina velutipes Cultivation Media Wastes into Chicken Feed on the Meat Quality and Production Cost of Broiler (팽이버섯 탈병배지의 사료첨가가 육계의 질 및 생산비용에 미치는 영향)

  • To develop environmentally friendly bio-materials for animal feed, the potential of using mushroom was studied. Adding Flammulina velutipes cultivation media wastes (FCMW) has shown beneficial effects on broiler meat quality and production cost because of the $10{\sim}20%$ saving in feeds for broiler chicken. However, differences proximate composition between FCMW and commercial broiler chicken feed were observed. FCMW had higher contents of crude fat (6.2%) and crude fiber (13.7%) than the commercial broiler feed which had crude fat and crude fiber of 4.0%, and 6.0%, respectively. But FCMW crude protein contents were lower (12.2%) than those in commercial broiler (19.0%). Adding $5{\sim}10%$ of FCMW to broiler chicken feed increased amino acid concentration upto $33{\sim}38%$ in the meat, but adding more than 20% decreased amino acid concentration.

Effective Heat Treatment Techniques for Control of Mung Bean Sprout Rot, Incorporable into Commercial Mass Production

  • Seedlot disinfection techniques to control mung bean sprout rot caused by Colletoricum acutatum and C. gloeosporioides were evaluated for commercial production scheme. Soaking seedlots in propolis (100 X) and ethanol (20% for 30 min) appeared promising with control values of 85.5 and 80.8 respectively, but still resulted in up to 20% rot incidence. None of the C. acutatum conidia survived through hot water immersion treatment (HWT) for 10 min at temperatures of 55, 60 and $65^{\circ}C$, whereas the effective range of the dry heat treatment (DHT) was $60-65^{\circ}C$. Tolerance of mung bean seedlot, as estimated by hypocotyl elongation and root growth, was lower for HWT than for DHT. Germination and growth of sprouts were excellent over the range of $55-65^{\circ}C\;at\;5^{\circ}C$ intervals, except for HWT at $65^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. At this marginal condition, heat damage appeared so that approximately 2% of seeds failed to sprout to normal germling and retarded sprouts were less than 5% with coarse wrinkled hypocotyls. These results suggested that DHT would be more feasible to disinfect mung bean seedlots for commercial sprout production. Heat treatment at above ranges was highly effective in eliminating the epiphytic bacterial strains associated with marketed sprout rot samples. HWT of seedlot at 55 and $60^{\circ}C$ for 5 min resulted in successful control of mung bean sprout rot incidence with marketable sprout quality. DHT at 60 and $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 min also gave good results through the small-scale sprouting system. Therefore, we optimized DHT scheme at 60 and $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, considering the practical value of seedlot disinfection with high precision and accuracy. This was further proved to be a feasible and reliable method against anthracnose incidence and those bacterial strains associated with marketed sprout rot samples as well, through factory scale mung bean sprout production system.

Estimation of Genetic Parameters and Trends for Length of Productive Life and Lifetime Production Traits in a Commercial Landrace and Yorkshire Swine Population in Northern Thailand

  • The objective of this research was to estimate genetic parameters and trends for length of productive life (LPL), lifetime number of piglets born alive (LBA), lifetime number of piglets weaned (LPW), lifetime litter birth weight (LBW), and lifetime litter weaning weight (LWW) in a commercial swine farm in Northern Thailand. Data were gathered during a 24-year period from July 1989 to August 2013. A total of 3,109 phenotypic records from 2,271 Landrace (L) and 838 Yorkshire sows (Y) were analyzed. Variance and covariance components, heritabilities and correlations were estimated using an Average Information Restricted Maximum Likelihood (AIREML) procedure. The 5-trait animal model contained the fixed effects of first farrowing year-season, breed group, and age at first farrowing. Random effects were sow and residual. Estimates of heritabilities were medium for all five traits ($0.17{\pm}0.04$ for LPL and LBA to $0.20{\pm}0.04$ for LPW). Genetic correlations among these traits were high, positive, and favorable (p<0.05), ranging from $0.93{\pm}0.02$ (LPL-LWW) to $0.99{\pm}0.02$ (LPL-LPW). Sow genetic trends were non-significant for LPL and all lifetime production traits. Sire genetic trends were negative and significant for LPL ($-2.54{\pm}0.65d/yr$; p = 0.0007), LBA ($-0.12{\pm}0.04piglets/yr$; p = 0.0073), LPW ($-0.14{\pm}0.04piglets/yr$; p = 0.0037), LBW ($-0.13{\pm}0.06kg/yr$; p = 0.0487), and LWW ($-0.69{\pm}0.31kg/yr$; p = 0.0365). Dam genetic trends were positive, small and significant for all traits ($1.04{\pm}0.42d/yr$ for LPL, p = 0.0217; $0.16{\pm}0.03piglets/yr$ for LBA, p<0.0001; $0.12{\pm}0.03piglets/yr$ for LPW, p = 0.0002; $0.29{\pm}0.04kg/yr$ for LBW, p<0.0001 and $1.23{\pm}0.19kg/yr$ for LWW, p<0.0001). Thus, the selection program in this commercial herd managed to improve both LPL and lifetime productive traits in sires and dams. It was ineffective to improve LPL and lifetime productive traits in sows.
