  • The purpose of this study was investigate the historical change in Kasa for the Buddhist commandment in the era of Buddha and the Korean Kasa. The original Kasa specified in Buddhist commandment has many concrete features. In contrast Korean Kasa is quite simplified and become very practical. Although we could not follow the numerous original specifications in Kasa, we must maintain and transmit Korean Kasa based in the minimum regurations. For this purpose, it is necessary to form a unified opinion and to develop a desirable specification for the Korean Kasa.

  • Why do religions emphasize good deeds like charity or love? What kind of relation are there between good deeds and salvation? Early Buddhism stresses that the deed of mortal cannot escape retribution. And deeds are intentional act, so those are representation of mind. Therefore an issue of mind raises its head before action. The extinction of ignorance and thirsty gives rise to good mind, and the good mind produces good deed. Mahāyāna Buddhism accentuates charity. It signifies that the mind of oneself sympathizes the mind of others. That is impossible unless one throws away attachment to oneself. The alms deed makes that possible. In Roman Catholicism Ten Commandments assert absolute worship to god. The transcendental merits devaluate worldly ones, so the mind can obtain calmness. Protestant claims the one can acquire salvation only by faith. And the salvation leads human to good deed. In conclusion good deeds are not ways and means to mokṣa or grace, but identical with them in Early Buddhism and Mahāyāna Buddhism, and Roman Catholicism and Protestant.

  • In case of violation of the Personal Information Protection Act, administrative dispositions will be taken according to the legal standards, and the results will be announced. However, the current method has limitations in its effectiveness as repeated administrative dispositions are increasing despite the announcement by the disclosure system of the Personal Information Protection Act. In this paper, we deploy the introduction of the 'public announcement commandment' against violators by analyzing the administrative disposition results according to the violation of the Personal Information Protection Act. It is able to strengthen the existing disclosure system for self-disclose violations by providing easy recognition to the people about the fact of violation itself against the Personal Information Protection Act. Furthermore, we analyze major industries through the industry groups and violations of laws that were subject to publication, and data published on the results of administrative dispositions for violation of the Personal Information Protection Act. Finally, we propose the legal basis for the 'public announcement commandment' which allows the violator to publish by oneself for the announcement of the fact that the corrective action has been taken.

  • R.W.B. Lewis called Greene's three novels - Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter - Greene's 'trilogy'. Greene was paid full attention by many readers and many critics after publishing these Catholic novels. The themes and plots of his Catholic novels are unique and beyond those of traditional Catholicism. Greene is always willing to stand on the edge of reality. He always conflicts with the reality and eagerly searches for a higher, more spiritual dimension. If we view Greene's protagonists from an open-minded viewpoint, Pinkie of Brighton Rock will be saved at the mercy and grace of God in spite of being evil. Whiskey Priest of The Power and the Glory is worthy of being called a saint in spite of his drunkenness and adultery. Scobie of The Heart of the Matter will be within God's grace in spite of his suicide. The reason all protagonists are saint-like is clear and simple because they all have faith and sacrifice themselves to obey God's first commandment, to love others. To summarize the theme of Greene's 'trilogy', we can say that love is the most valuable in the world. God has mercy for all human beings. The protagonists love God and they love others. In fact, Greene's faith is found in his love of human beings and God.

A Study on the Symbolical Significance in Korean Kasa - Focusing on the embroideries - (한국가사의 상징성에 대한연구 -가사에 나타난 문양을 중심으로-)

  • Buddhism as one of alien thoughts has been developed conflicting and fusing with Korean Cultural bases. From these fusion process Korean Kasa (i.e, sacerdotal robe for Buddhist monk) also came into possession of different features from original Kasa which Buddhist Command- ment regulates or Kasa of South Asia which is the birthplace of Buddhism. 1. Original kasa was Pamsukula (i.e., a shabby, abandoned, muddy cloth), which did not permit special ornament or luxurious materal. However, we can find splendid colors, letters and embroideries in Korean Kasa. 2. These phenomenon originated from Three Treasures Faith, that is to say, the faith for three treasures, such as Buddha, Buddhist Commandment and Buddhist monk, which was formed by the fusion of Buddhism and conventional Shamanism. 3. Such letters as 천(Heaven), 왕(God). 영(om) stand for what shaped Guardian Deities protecting buddhist Sanctum. 4. The rmbroideries of three-legged bird, such as rabbit and toad, which symbolyze 일(sun) and 월(moon) stand for what shaped conventional divinities. 5. After Kasa possessing originally practical significance, such as Kasa Charity, was penetrated into Korea, it became the object of faith, possessing symbolical significance in addition.

The Ethics of the Othering in the Era of Transnationalism

  • The space of the Other assumes the space of Barthes's multiplicity and Foucault's transdiscursive position, and, therefore, aims at becoming the locus in which the speaking subject and the hearing subjects are supposed to communicate and constitute as if they were situated in the pscychoanalytic session. However, the wall of untranslatibility across language and cultures still exist there in the space of the Other in the form of trauma and aggressivity, as Lacan demonstrate perceptively through the reading of Kant avec Sade. In short, Lacan regards the moral commandment (to love one's neighbor as oneself) as the obstacle in the Freud's myth of transgression, and interprets this in terms of the emergence of the Other. Freud understands that the aggressivity in the subject's own heart was inherent in all humans, and that one's neighbor would be evil. Lacan goes beyond Freud and articulates that the aggressivity in the imaginary relation with the Other in the mirror stage insures that an evil inheres in the very being of humanity. A global phenomenon of the diasporic identities and hybridity, the phenomenon which has been represented by the complicated intermixture of terms which span from diaspora, postcolonialism, postnationalism. and transnationalism can be clarified, if they are put in the context of the ethics of Othering or becoming the Other. The ethics of Othering presupposes the situation in which the diasporic subjects encounter the lack of the cross-cultural negotiation and communication. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the poetics of Other and the logic of the ethics of Othering can explain the postmodern or transmodern world which has become deterritorialized, diasporic, and transnational as well as how one can encounter the results of diasporic and postcolonial double consciousness, a consciousness which is a discursive category for multicultural or cross-cultural, focusing on the concept of liminality/interstitiality

New Perspectives on Sunday School of Korean Church for Next Generation (다음 세대와 한국교회 주일학교의 새 전망)

  • In the early 21st century, the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has arisen during the development of the technological science of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, has been a great challenge in all fields including politics, economy, industry, education and religion in Korean society. To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Korean government announced 'social distancing guidelines,' focused on the 'prohibition of three conditions'(crowd, closeness, airtight) for safety reasons. These quarantine guidelines made it more difficult for Korean churches and Sunday schools to operate. In general, looking at the statistical data of the major denominations of the Korean Church in the second half of the 20th century, shows that the Church has entered a period of stagnant or declining growth. Data also show that the number of students attending Sunday School is decreasing. The researcher identified four causes of the crisis faced by the Korean church and Korean Sunday school entering the 21st century. These trends are influenced by the tendencies of postmodernism, the deconstruction of modern universalism, the certainty and objectivity of knowledge, and the grand narrative and worldview of diffusion. Moreover, it is a phenomenon in which the young population decreases in contrast to the increasing elderly population in the age of population cliff in Korean society. Sunday Schools are also facing a crisis, as the youth population, who will become the future heroes of the Korean church, is declining. Finally, constraints of Church and Sunday school education activities are due to COVID-19 Pandemic. As analysis shows the loss of the Church's educational vision and a decrease in the passion for education. Accordingly, the researcher suggests four new strategies for the next generation of Korean Sunday schools, whose ranges from 200 members or less; this range covers the majority of Sunday School program run by churches in Korea. First, in the age of postmodernism, a time of uncertainty and relativism, Christian Societies requires teachers who are certain of absolute Christian truth and faith. Second, in an era of declining population cliffs for younger generations, a shift to a home-friendly Sunday school paradigm is needed. Third, during the COVID-19 pandemic, educational activities must appropriately utilize face-to-face and non-face-to-face communication. Finally, even in difficult times, Korean Sunday school should nevertheless remember the Lord's great commandment(Matthew 28:18-20) and restore the vision and passion of education to announce and teach the gospel. The researcher hopes that this study will provide small, positive steps in rebuilding Korean Sunday school educational activities for future generations in difficult times.

A Christian Answer to the Problem of Suicide in Korean Society (한국 사회의 자살 문제에 대한 기독교적 답변)

  • This paper deals with suicide that has become a serious problem in our society as well as in the world today from a Christian perspective. Historical position regarding suicide is divided into two; some see it as a brave and honorable act and give approval to it, the others view it as act of giving up the life that is given by God and are opposed to it. Though suicides in the Bible are mostly committed to maintain honor, because of Augustin's position it became negative in Christianity, leading to a thought that one who committed suicide goes to hell. Why then people commit suicide? The views of scholars on the cause of suicide are divided into three; biological, psychological, sociological. My position is that though each or all of them contribute to suicide, yet the decisive factor is on how a person reacts to them. Major factor of suicide is how humans as interpretive beings accept the present despair. On the basis of this understanding of suicide and humans, I conclude this paper with three new recognitions as an essential answer to suicide. First, humans are made in God's image and belong to Him, thus their life is precious. Second, Christianity views humans as ones look for the hope in the future as the eternal life. Third, suicide is a violation of the commandment 'do not kill' yet it is not an act of sin but a disease that needs to be cured. To achieve this Christianity must not only spread the idea of respect for life and also run suicide prevention center every city.
