  • This study presents relations between the time lag and interaction index of the impinging-jet injectors using the time lag model in a model chamber. The response of the flame is analyzed to artificial perturbation with 5% amplitude of oxidizer speed at a resonance frequency. At the mixing point of fuel and oxidizer, which determines the characteristic length, the relationship between velocity perturbation and heat release rate is quantified by combustion parameters of interaction index and time lag. In this method, time lag or delay is calculated by the characteristic length and the average velocity obtained from numerical results. The tendency that the time delay decreases with axial jet velocity has been observed.

  • The main purpose of this work is to test the validation of use of a four step reaction mechanism to simulate the laminar speed of hydrogen enriched methane flame. The laminar velocities of hydrogen-methane-air mixtures are very important in designing and predicting the progress of combustion and performance of combustion systems where hydrogen is used as fuel. In this work, laminar flame velocities of different composition of hydrogen-methane-air mixtures (from 0% to 40% hydrogen) have been calculated for variable equivalence ratios (from 0.5 to 1.5) using the flame propagation module (FSC) of the chemical kinetics software Chemkin 4.02. Our results were tested against an extended database of laminar flame speed measurements from the literature and good agreements were obtained especially for fuel lean and stoichiometric mixtures for the whole range of hydrogen blends. However, in the case of fuel rich mixtures, a slight overprediction (about 10%) is observed. Note that this overprediction decreases significantly with increasing hydrogen content. This research demonstrates that reduced chemical kinetics mechanisms can well reproduce the laminar burning velocity of methane-hydrogen-air mixtures at lean and stoichiometric mixture flame for hydrogen content in the fuel up to 40%. The use of such reduced mechanisms in complex combustion device can reduce the available computational resources and cost because the number of species is reduced.

  • MILD (Moderate and Intense Low Oxygen Dilution) combustion is a technology that uses the recirculation of combustion gas to increase thermal efficiency not only by keeping down the concentration of Nitric Oxides and temperature but also by uniformizing the internal temperature of the combustion furnace. This study is a trial to obtain MILD combustion characteristics by adjusting the equivalence ratio with the air flow rate in the conical combustor while keeping the fuel flow rate and measuring the exhaust gas of the combustion furnace.

  • The conventional regenerative system has a high thermal efficiency as well as energy saving using the high preheated combustion air. in spite of these advantages, it can not avoid high nitric oxide emissions. Recently, flameless combustion has received much attention to solve these problems. In this research, numerical analysis is performed for flow-combustion phenomena in the self regenerative burner. In this analysis we used Fluent 6.0 code. the that is developed for commercial use, Methane gas is used as a fuel and two-step reaction model for methane and Zeldovich mechanism for NO generation are used. the velocity of the preheated combustion air is used as a parameter and we analyze the characteristics of flow-field, temperature distributions and NO emissions. Due to the increased recirculation rate, the maximum temperature of flame is significantly increased and NOx emissions is reduced

  • The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effect of a flow motion on the flame development by means of an optically-accessible constant-volume combustion chamber and the visualization technique of a combustion flame. At first, the characteristics of a flame propagation are investigated in the combustion field of the two kinds of flow conditions such as a quiescent and a flowing condition, and methane-air mixture is used as fuel. Then the same investigation is performed in two flow configurations : bulk flow motion type and turbulence generating type. In this study, the combustion phenomena are analyzed by measuring the combustion pressure, flame propagation speed, mean velocity, turbulent intensity, and mass fraction burned.

  • The measurement of velocity and stain rate field has been conducted in opposed impinging jet combustion. When a smaller diameter (5mm) orifice of pre-chamber was used, previous studies had reported that the combustion phase showed a shift from weak turbulent combustion to moderate turbulent combustion in the modified Borghi Diagram. In the case with smaller orifice diameter (5mm), NOx emission was substantially reduced by a factor 1/2 while the combustion pressure remains at the same as that in the conventional combustion. Hence, in this study, the experiment setup using PIV technique was designed to identify the relation of the strain rate distribution and NOx reduction associated with moderate turbulent combustion. As a result, it was found that the highly strained pockets are widely distributed during the combustion in the middle of chamber when the orifice diameter is 5mm. And the corresponding PDF distribution of strain rates she was the smoothly distributed strain .ate within the range of |$\pm$1000| (1/sec) rather than a spike shape about zero point. This is the unique feature observed in the combustion with 5mm orifice diameter. Therefore, it can be concluded that the substantial NOx reduction in opposed impinging combustor is mainly attributed to the strain rate distribution within the range of |$\pm$1000|resulting in the combustion phase shift to moderate turbulent combustion.

  • This paper is concerned with an experimental study of a turbocharged diesel engine operating on dimethyl ether(DME). The combustion and emission characteristics of DME engine were investigated. The results showed that the maximum torque and power with DME could achieve a greater level compared to diesel operation, particularly at low speeds; the brake specific fuel consumption with DME was lower than the diesel at low and middle engine speeds. The injection delay of DME was longer than that of diesel. However, the maximum cylinder pressure, maximum pressure rise rate and combustion noises of DME engine were lower than those of diesel. The combustion velocity of DME was faster than that of diesel, resulting in a shorter combustion duration of DME. Compared with the diesel engine, $NO_x$ emissions of the DME engine were reduced by 41.6% on ESC data. The DME engine was smoke free at all operating points of the engine.

  • The present study is focused on the subgrid scale combustion model in context with a Large Eddy Simulation. In order to deal with detailed chemical kinetic, the level-set method based on a flamelet model is addressed. In this model, the flame front is treated as an interface, represented by an iso-surface of a scalar field G. This iso-surface is convected by the velocity field and its filtered quantities are include the turbulent burning velocity, which is to be modelled. For modelling the turbulent burning velocity, an equation for the length-scale of the sub-filter flame front fluctuations was developed. The formulations and issues for the turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames are addressed in detail.

  • Characteristics of lifted flames in axisymmetric laminar coflow jets have been investigated experimentally. Approximate solutions for velocity and concentration accounting virtual origins have been proposed for coflow jets to analyze the behavior of liftoff height. From the measurement of Rayleigh intensity for probing the concentration field of propane, the validity of the approximate solutions was substantiated. From the images of OH PLIF and CH chemiluminescence and the Rayleigh concentration measurement, it has been shown that the positions of maximum luminosity in direct photography coincide with the tribrachial points, which were located along the stoichiometric contour. The liftoff height in coflow jets was found to increase highly nonlinearly with jet velocity and was sensitive to coflow velocity.

  • The transported probability density function(PDF) model has been applied to simulate the turbulent nonpremixed piloted jet flame. To realistically account for the mixture fraction PDF informations on the turbulent non-premixed jet flame, the present Lagrangian PDF transport approach is based on the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF formulation. The fluctuating velocity of stochastic fields is modeled by simplified Langevin model(SLM), turbulence frequency of stochastic fields is modeled by Jayesh-Pope model and effects of molecular diffusion are represented by the interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) mixing model. To validate the present approach, the numerical results obtained by the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF model are compared with experimental data in terms of the unconditional and conditional means of mixture fraction, temperature and species and PDFs.
