  • Catalytic combustion known as one of the traditional oxidation methods of VOC gas is restricted to its applicable fields because of its reaction characteristics. But recently innovative improvement of catalytic endurance makes its applicable range broader from MEMs to industrial power generation. Therefore, control technologies based on the catalytic combustion characteristics are researched and developed dynamically. Especially, the stable control of catalytic combustion is an essential factor in a view of maximizing its efficiency. In this research, the fuel equivalence ratio and the preheating temperature of mixture gas is controlled by catalytic combustion system enhanced in heat transfer with high temperature heat exchanger. As a result the combustion characteristics of system was investigated, and both passive and active control type were compared and analyzed.

  • In this study, thermoacoustic analysis model was developed in order to predict both eigenfrequencies and initial growth rate of combustion instabilities for lean premixed gas turbine combustors. As a first step, a model combustor and nozzle were selected and analytical linear equations for thermoacoustic waves were derived for a given combustion system. Then, methods showing how the equations can be used for analysis of the combustion instability were suggested. It was found that the prediction results showed a good agreement with the measurements. However, there were some limitation in growth rate predictions, which were related with over-simplification of flame structure, acoustic boundary conditions, and temperature distribution in the combustor.

  • An Experimental study was conducted on spray combustion using dual swirlers at different outlet angle; co-swirl and counter-swirl. To understand the characteristics of turbulent spray combustion of dual swril flow(DSF), the axial helical annular vaned swirlers with various swirl ratios and combination of angle and direction were designed. and temperature measurements of a rapidly thermocouple insertion and measurements of soot volume fraction and microstructure using thermophoretic sampling particle diagnostic(TSPD) as TEM were carried out. The NOx, $CO_2,\;O_2$, etc. was analyzed using emission gas analyzer. The results show that flame stability were maintained under very lean condition. for both co-swirl and counter-swirl case. And though Counter-swirl case kept the higher temperature region compared to co-swirl case, Counter-swirl combustion represented less NOx emission and soot formation than co-swirl case.

  • In many combustion systems, swirling combustion air is extensively applied as an aid for stabilization of high intensity combustion pocesses. Swirl, generally, causes significant effects on the flow field which, in turn, determines the size, shape, and stability of flames, and combustion intensity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirls on flames produced from a model combustor designed in this paper. In order to impart swirls to the combustion air, a movable block swirl generator was used. Temperature distribution and radiative heat flux along the centerline of the swirling flame were measured. Data obtained from these swirl flows can be used as design data for high intensity or high efficiency combustion systems. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Flame temperature profiles were measured at various swirl number. 2. The axial distance for maximum temperature from the centerline of burner increased as the swirl number increased. 3. Radiative heat flux increased as the swirl number and axial distance from burner increased.

  • Ultra lean combustion with stratified air-fuel mixture is one of the methods that can improve fuel economy of gasoline engines. The aim of this study is to show that how much fuel economy is improved and what are differences in engine control of the ultra lean combustion compared with stoichiometric combustion. In this study, the BMW N53 GDI engine, which is one of ultra lean combustion GDI engines introduced in the market recently, was tested at various engine operating conditions. Results indicated that fuel consumption rates were improved by 11.9~25.8% by the ultra lean combustion compared with stoichiometric combustion. It was also found that multiple fuel injection, multiple spark, early intake valve opening, and large vlave overlap duration were the features of the ultra lean combustion for combustion stability and emission improvement.

  • The direct injection (DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides (NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing hybrid system consist of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and aftertreatment system as well as diesel particulate filter (DPF) or lean NOx trap (LNT) should be applied. The variation of EGR rate due to the malfunction of EGR valve can affect not only the combustion stability of engine but also the performance of aftertreatment system. In this research, 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was used to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various operating conditions with EGR. While the fuel consumption was increased with increase of EGR rate, NOx emission was improved by maximum 90% at low speed, low load operating condition. To achieve combustion stability and reliability of aftertrearment system with minimum penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the fault diagnosis of EGR malfunction must be employed.

  • The purpose of this study is to reduce harmful emission gases in the range of stable combustion without loss of a thermal efficiency. Therefore, effects of both exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) and synthetic gas addition on engine performance and emission were investigated in a gasoline engine. Synthetic gas(syngas), which is in general prepared from reforming gasoline, was utilized in order to promote stable combustion. The major components of syngas are H2, CO and $N_2$ gases. The percentage of syngas addition was changed from 0 to 30% in energy fraction and EGR rate was varied up to 30%. As a result, $COV_{IMEP}$ as a parameter of combustion stability was decreased and THC/$NO_X$ emissions were reduced with the increase of syngas addition. And $COV_{IMEP}$ was increased with the increase of EGR but $NO_X$ emission was greatly reduced. In addition, under the region where the EGR rate is around 20%, thermal efficiency was improved.

  • Fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicles could be applied to internal combustion engine for the reduction of engine out emissions. Since syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component, it has abilities to enhance the combustion characteristics with wide flammability and high speed flame propagation. In this study, syngas was added to a gasoline engine to improve combustion stability and exhaust emissions of idle state. Syngas fraction is varied to 0%, 50%, 100% with various ignition timing and excess air ratio. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to widely extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions.

  • The reformer system is a method for hydrogen production from hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas under high temperature environment($about{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$). The premixed swirl burner with mixing swirler and combustion swirler designed to deliver fuel cell electric output from 0.5 kW to 1.5 kW. Premixed swirl burner experiments using natural gas and mixture of natural gas and anode off gas were carried out to analyse flame patterns and stability by equivalence ratio respectively. The results show that the stable swirl flame can be established for all cases of fuels type using the premixed swirl burner. The swirl flame had a wide stability region and it showed very low CO(50 ppm) and $NO_x$(20 ppm) emission at different fuel type and various equivalence ratio conditions. The operating range of premixed swirl burner for stable swirl flame is found to exist between equivalence ratio of 0.70 to 0.90 for turn down ratio of 3:1.
