  • An iterative numerical computational algorithm is presented to design a plate of shell element subjected to membrane and flexural forces. Based on equilibrium consideration, equations for capacities of top and bottom reinforcements in two orthogonal directions have been derived. The amount of reinforcement is determined locally, i. e., for each sampling point, from the equilibrium between applied and internal forces. One case of design is performed for a hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell (originally used by Lin and Scordelis) to check the design strength against a consistent design load, therefore, to verify the adequacy of design practice for reinforced concrete shells. Based on nonlinear analyses performed, the analytically calculated ultimate load exceeded the design ultimate load from 14-43% for an analysis with relatively low to high tension stiffening, ${\gamma}$ =5~20 cases. For these cases, the design method gives a lower bound on the ultimate load with respect to Lower bound theorem. This shows the adequacy of the current practice at least for this saddle shell case studied. To generalize the conclusion many more designs-analyses are performed with different shell configurations.

  • The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the ring stiffened cylindrical shells with a rectangular cutout. The cutout is located on the center of the shell. The Love's thin shell theory combined with the discrete stiffener theory is adopted to formulate the analytical model of the shell. The effect of stiffener eccentricity, number, and position on vibration characteristics of the shell is examined. Also the effect of cutout size is examined. By comparison with previously published analytical and new FEM results, it is shown that natural frequencies and mode shapes can be determined with adequate accuracy.

  • The objective of this paper is to extend the use of the improved degenerated shell element to the linear and the large displacement analysis of plates and shells with laminated composites. In the formulation of the element stiffness, the combined use of three different techniques was made. This element is free of serious shear/membrane locking problems and undesirable compatible/commutable spurious kinematic deformation modes. The total Lagrangian approach has been utilized for the definition of the deformation and the solution to the nonlinear equilibrium equations is obtained by the Newton-Raphson method. The applicability and accuracy of this improved degenerated shell element in the analysis of laminated composite plates and shells are demonstrated by solving several numerical examples.

  • The effects of boundary conditions on vibration characteristics for the ring stiffered composite cylindrical shells are investigated by theoretical and experimental method. In the theoretical procedure, the Love's thin shell theory combined with the discrete stiffener theory to consider the ring stiffening effect are adopted to derive the frequency equation. In experiment, the impact exciting method is used to obtain the vibraton results. Five different boundary conditions: clamped-clamped, simply supported-simply supported, free-free, clamped-free, clamped-simply supported are considered in this study.

  • The continuous circular cylindrical shells are widely used for the high performance structures of aircraft, spacecraft, missile, nuclear fuel rod shell etc.. In this paper, a method for the free vibration analysis of the continuous circular cylindrical shells with the multiple simple supports is developed by using the receptance method. With this method, the vibrational characteristics of the continuous system is analyzed by considering as a combined structure. The system receptance is also derided by the application of the equilibrium of forces and the continuity of displacements at the support points. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated numerically and they are compared with the FEM results to improve the reliability of analytical solution. Numerical results on the 4-equal-span continuous circular cylindrical shell are presented in this paper.

  • Shell structures are very interesting from the design point of view and these are well recognized in the scientific literature. In this paper the analysis of the buckling loads and stability paths of a sandwich conical shell with unsymmetrical faces under combined load based on the assumptions of moderately large deflections (geometrically nonlinear theory) is considered and elastic-plastic properties of the material of the faces are taken into considerations. External load is assumed to be two-parametrical one and it is assumed that the shell deforms into the plastic range before buckling. Constitutive relations in the analysis are those of the Nadai-Hencky deformation theory of plasticity and Prandtl-Reuss plastic flow theory with the H-M-H (Huber-Mises-Hencky) yield condition. The governing stability equations are obtained by strain energy approach and Ritz method is used to solve the equations with the help of analytical-numerical methods using computer.

  • Based on the third-order shear deformation theory, the wave propagations in doubly curved spherical- and cylindrical- panels reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are firstly investigated in present work. The coupled equations of wave propagation for the carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) doubly curved panels are established. Then, combined with the harmonic balance method, the eigenvalue technique is adopted to simulate the velocity-wave number curves of the CNTRC doubly curved panels. In the end, numerical results are showed to discuss the effects of the impact of key parameters including the volume fraction, different shell types (including spherical (R1=R2=R) and cylindrical (R1=R, R2=→∞)), wave number as well as modal number on the sensitivity of elastic waves propagating in CNTRC doubly curved shells.

  • The artificial shells of hard inorganic nanocomposites on individual cells would protect the cells physically and chemically, and control cell division. These emerging properties could be combined with cell-surface functionalizations for applications to cell-based sensors and assays as well as for fundamental studies on single-cell biology. In this work, individual Chlorella cells were encapsulated within a silica/titania nanocomposite shell in a biocompatible fashion that utilized a designed peptide, RKKRKKRKKRKKDDDDDDDD, as a catalytic template for formation of both $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ on the cell surface. The cell viability was maintained, and the division of the encapsulated Chlorella cells was controlled. The cell viability was enhanced compared with the $TiO_2$-shell formation. In addition, the incorporation of $TiO_2$ to the shell made it possible to anchor the ligands of interest to the shell via catechol chemistry. All in all, the combination of biological $SiO_2$ and abiolgical $TiO_2$ for the shell formation gave more tunability of the artificial shells compared with the $SiO_2$ or $TiO_2$ shells only.

  • The main intention of this paper is to develop and compare the algorithm based on finite element procedures for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis which has combined effects of material and geometric nonlinearities. Incremental equilibrium equations based on the principle of virtual work are derived by the finite element approach. For the elasto - plastic large deformation analysis of shells and the determination of the displacement-time configuration under time-varying loads, the explicit, implicit and combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is adopted. In the time structure is selected and the results are compared with each others. Isoparametric 8-noded quadrilateral curved elements are used for shell structure in the analysis and for geometrically nonlinear elastic behaviour, a total Lagrangian coordinate system was adopted. On the other hands, material nonlinearity is based on elasto-plastic models with Von-Mises yield criteria. Thus, the combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is benefit in general case of shell structure, which is the result of this paper.

  • Laminated composite structures find wide range of applications in many branches of technology. They are much suited for weight sensitive structures (like aircraft) where thinner and lighter members made of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials are used. The orientations of fiber direction in layers and number of layers and the thickness of the layers as well as material of composites play a major role in determining the strength and stiffness. Thus the basic design problem is to determine the optimum stacking sequence in terms of laminate thickness, material and fiber orientation. In this paper, a new optimization technique called Cellular Automata (CA) has been combined with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to develop a different search and optimization algorithm, known as Cellular Genetic Algorithm (CGA), which considers the laminate thickness, angle of fiber orientation and the fiber material as discrete variables. This CGA has been successfully applied to obtain the optimal fiber orientation, thickness and material lay-up for multi-layered composite hybrid beams plates and shells subjected to static buckling and dynamic constraints.
