  • Shell structures are very interesting from the design point of view and these are well recognized in the scientific literature. In this paper the analysis of the buckling loads and stability paths of a sandwich conical shell with unsymmetrical faces under combined load based on the assumptions of moderately large deflections (geometrically nonlinear theory) is considered and elastic-plastic properties of the material of the faces are taken into considerations. External load is assumed to be two-parametrical one and it is assumed that the shell deforms into the plastic range before buckling. Constitutive relations in the analysis are those of the Nadai-Hencky deformation theory of plasticity and Prandtl-Reuss plastic flow theory with the H-M-H (Huber-Mises-Hencky) yield condition. The governing stability equations are obtained by strain energy approach and Ritz method is used to solve the equations with the help of analytical-numerical methods using computer.

  • There is the need to balance safety, economy and serviceability in all phases of society proboems. This is especially true in structural code formulation, where a framework is established by which practicing structural enginers can be assured of designing structures that reasonably meet the above three objectives. The existeing design codes, which are generally based on the structural theory and certain engineering experience, do not realistically consider the uncertainties of loads and resistances and the basic reliability concepts. The purpose of the present study is therefore to develop the realistic reliablility-based design criteria to secure adequate safety and reliability, and to derive the models for partial and combined resistance factor formats.

  • Joint structures of composite truss bridges can have the same details for the connection between diagonal members and upper concrete slab as the connection between diagonal members and lower concrete slab. Adequate connection details should be decided according to design codes, constructibility, and economical evaluation. It is necessary to clarify the design check items and load transferring mechanism because combined external loads on composite truss bridges are concentrated at the joints. Joints with gusset plates and stud connectors are applied and complicated joint details may arise some problems in construction. This paper deals with experimental evaluation of the joints in composite truss bridges and proper design provisions were investigated to enhance the details. Push-out test specimens with group studs were fabricated and the effects of grouping and bent studs were studied.

  • This paper describes the test results of plant minimum stable load (Pmin) for Ilijan Power Plant. The test was conducted on May 13 through 14, 2015 to investigate the plant operating and equipment condition in accordance with "Ilijan Plant Performance Test Procedure on Plant Minimum Stable Load" [1]. This paper also contains the assessment of the impact of Pmin to plant operating parameters and possible technical operating issues when operating at lower loads and to recommend the safe minimum load operation of Ilijan per block. In addition, this paper describes the performance calculation results of efficiency and heat rate depending on the load level.

  • Due to various types of errors added to dynamic weight measurement data, proper methods to reduce measurement errors are required to produce reliable weights. To cope with parasitic types of errors in real systems, information provided by the various sensors is utilized and combined in such a way to reduce the measurement errors of load cells. In addition to four channels of load cells from a trailer, an accelerometer is used to obtain the information to compensate the error induced from vertical movement of the vehicle due to the variation of ground level. A model trailer system is run to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method to reduce noise of dynamic weight measurements. Experiments show that the processed error magnitudes of less than 20 g can be obtained for 10 Kg experimental loads.

  • When farmer loads and unloads farm products with a trailer, linked to a tractor, the tractor-trailer is backed up to the loading duck. However, travelling backward is not easy and takes a time for even skilled operators. Therefore, unmanned backing up is necessary to save the effort. A backward controller of tractor-trailer was simulated using fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. Operators drive the tractor-trailer back and forth several times for backing up to the loading duck. As the operators did it, a backward controller was designed using fuzzy logic. And genetic algorithms was applied to improve the performance of the backward controller. With the strings coded with the fuzzy membership functions, genetic operations were carried out. After 30 generations, the best fitted fuzzy membership functions were found. Those membership functions were used in the fuzzy backward controller. The fuzzy controller combined with genetic algorithms showed the better results than the fuzzy controller did alone.

  • In this paper, novel concept of a photovoltaic(PV) power generation system adding the function of active filter(AF) is proposed. Even PV power generation system can be treated to a harmonics source for the power distribution system, it is necessary that the function of AF system in grid connected PV power generation system. Active Filters intended for harmonic solutions are expending their functions from harmonic compensation of nonlinear loads into harmonic isolation between utilities and consumer, and harmonic damping throughout power distribution system. So, the PV system combined the function of AF system can be usefully applied in power distribution system. Here, the control strategy of PV-AF system is introduced.

  • In this paper, we examine the dynamic electromechanical behavior of an edge crack in a piezoelectric ceramic layer bonded between two elastic layers under the combined anti-plane mechanical shear and in-plane electric transient loadings. We adopted both the permeable and impermeable crack boundary conditions. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate are presented to show the dependences upon the geometry, material combination, electromechanical coupling coefficient and electric field.

  • Cracking of slabs will be caused by applied load and volume changes during the life of a structure and thus it reduces flexural stiffness of slabs. The effect of slab cracking must be considered for appropriate modeling of the flexural stiffness for frame members used in structural analysis. Analytical and experimental study was undertaken to estimate the stiffness reduction of slabs. In the analytical approach, the trend of slab stiffness reduction related to gravity and lateral loads is found and the stiffness reduction factor ranged from a half to a quarter in ACI building code is reasonable when defining range. Analyzing results of the test by Hwang and Moehle for 0.5% drift show that the differences of rotational stiffness on the connection types is found and good results of lateral stiffness using the value of one-third is obtained.

  • The paper summarizes the dynamic-based assessment of a reinforced concrete arch bridge, dating back to the 50's. The outlined approach is based on ambient vibration testing, output-only modal identification and updating of the uncertain structural parameters of a finite element model. The Peak Picking and the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition techniques were used to extract the modal parameters from ambient vibration data and a very good agreement in both identified frequencies and mode shapes has been found between the two techniques. In the theoretical study, vibration modes were determined using a 3D Finite Element model of the bridge and the information obtained from the field tests combined with a classic system identification technique provided a linear elastic updated model, accurately fitting the modal parameters of the bridge in its present condition. Hence, the use of output-only modal identification techniques and updating procedures provided a model that could be used to evaluate the overall safety of the tested bridge under the service loads.
