  • Many studies on the second-order analysis of reinforced concrete columns have been dealt for symmetric sections under uniaxial loading. However, actual columns are practically subjected to hiaxial loading. In order to more accurately predict the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading. the interaction between bending moments of major and minor axes should be considered. In this paper, a stiffness matrix of columns under biaxial loadings was derived and a numerical method was proposed. Numerical analyses, based on the proposed method. were performed to predict behavior of concrete columns with square and rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The analytical results were compared to those using the moment magnifier method in ACI code. It was found that the ultimate strength of concrete rectangular columns, fhr some cases of' biaxial loading conditions. calculated by the moment magnifier method was larger than the values based on the proposed method and therefore. may be ovet.'stimated.

  • The objective of this research is to study experimentally the behavior of stiffened steel tubes (CFSTs). Considered parameters are stiffening methods by through-bolts or shear connectors with different configurations. In addition, the effect of global (ratio between length to diameter) and local (proportion between diameter to thickness) slenderness ratios are investigated. Load application either applied on steel only or both steel and concrete is studied as well. Case of loading on steel only happens when concrete inside the column shrinks. The purpose of the research is to improve the behavior of CFSTs by load transfer between them and different stiffening methods. A parametric experimental study that incorporates thirty-three specimens is carried out to highlight the impact of those parameters. Different outputs are recorded for every specimen such as load capacities, vertical deflections, longitudinal strains, and hoop strains. Two modes of failure occur, yielding and global buckling. Shear connectors and through-bolts improve the ultimate load by up to 5% for sections loaded at steel with different studied global slenderness and local slenderness equal 63.5. Meanwhile, shear connectors or through bolts increase the ultimate load by up to 6% for global slenderness up to 15.75 for sections loaded on composite with local slenderness equals 63.50. Recommendations for future design code development are outlined.

  • The load distribution and deformation of pile-bent structures are investigated using a numerical study. A numerical analysis that takes into account the effects of varying cross-sectional area was performed for different pier diameters, loading steps, and soil conditions. Through the comparison study, it is shown that the location of maximum bending moment is almost the same per each loading step, regardless of varying cross-sections. However, the member force (i.e., stress of pile material) has the largest value at the ground surface when the cross-section is changed. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the location of maximum member force influences highly the behavior of pile-bent structure with varying cross-sections for repair works.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a textile pattern design using the columnar joints motif and a Tyvek fashion clutch bags using it. As a research method, first, through a literature review, columnar joint and Tyvek are understood, and design cases were considered. Second, through a survey, the purchase perception and design preference of columnar joints cultural products were analyzed. Third, based on the results of the survey on color and print, the pattern design for each type of columnar joint were developed, and the uv-printed Tyvek clutch bag was developed. The results of this study are as follows. First, the reason why the public was not attracted to the purchase of cultural products was dissatisfaction with practicality, price adequacy, and aesthetics. Therefore, it was analyzed that quality, practicality, price, carry-on storage, collection value, and casualness, as well as aesthetic design were important factors for purchasing factors pursued by consumers. Second, consumers preferred small goods the most for cultural products, and they pursued the use of colorful and contrasting colors, modern and geometric patterns, and eco-friendly materials, such as Tyvek. Third, columnar joint can be classified into three cross sections and four arrangements. The design unit of the columnar joint could be expressed as a hexagonal column, and 12 different pattern designs could be developed according to the cross sections and arrangements type. In addition, it was found that it was easy to produce fashion products suitable for the sensibility of modern people by utilizing Tyvek materials.

  • This paper presents compression capacity of transfer system in pilotis subjected to axial load. Recently, transfer system is usually used in low floors of wall-typed apartments when members' sections are suddenly changed between upper walls and bottom columns. It can help transfer loads from the walls to the columns. Especially, a transfer girder system is usually used as one of transfer systems applied to a pilotis. However, the transfer girder system has low constructability and economics. Therefore, the other transfer system with transfer slab was suggested and has been studied. In this paper, to evaluate the compression capacity of transfer slab, tests were conducted on pilotis transfer slab systems subjected to axial load. First of all, two specimens were determined by FEM. The main parameter is length of the bottom columns. The lengh of the bottom columns were 40% and 50% of length of upper walls in the tranfer slab specimens. Results showed that the compression capacity of piloti transfer systems subjected to axial load was affected by length of bottom columns. The compression capacity is 52% higher than design strength for specimen with the bottom column's length of 40% of length of the upper wall and 46% for specimen with the bottom column's length of 50% of length of the upper wall.

  • In the design of bridge piers in seismic area, the ductility requirement is the most important factor. In order to enhance the seismic performance of RC columns, it is necessary to make the ductility of columns larger by covering RC columns with steel tubes or confining RC columns by arranging transverse reinforcements such as hoop ties closely. Using core steel composite columns is useful as one of the reinforcing RC columns. In this paper, quasi-static tests on concrete encased composite columns with single core steel or multiple steel elements were performed to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns. Eight concrete-encased composite specimens were fabricated. The cross-sections of these specimens are composed of concrete-encased H-shaped structural steel columns and a concrete-encased circular tube with partial in-filled concrete. Test parameters were the amount of the transverse reinforcements, type and number of encased steel member. Through the tests, it was evaluated the ductility of SRC composite specimens. It has become clear from the test results that encased steel elements makes the deformation capacity of the columns to be larger. The displacement ductility and lateral strength of specimen with concrete-encased circular tube were indicated the biggest value.

  • The use of high-strength concrete which permits smaller cross sections, reduced dead loads, and longer spans has been getting more popular in tall buildings. However, there has been little research on behavior of high-strength concrete columns laterally reinforced with square ties and subjected to compressive loading. With the addition of transverse reinforcement which lead to triaxial compressive state, ductility behavior of high-strength column member shall be increased. In this study, rational quality and quantity evaluations were made to investigate the ultimate strength and strain ductility by confinement effect of tie reinforced high-strength concrete columns subject to uniaxial loads. Concrete failure theory at the triaxial compressive state and statistical results based on conventional experimental data were applied for this propose. Up to 185 columns, tested under monotonically increasing concentric loading, were evaluated in terms of strength and strain ductility. Analytical results show that confinement stress, maximum compressive strength, and increase of strain equations were developed with the consideration of concrete strength, yield strength, spacing, volumetric ratio, and configurations of tie reinforcement.

  • Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) beam-columns are widely used owing to their good performance. They have high strength, ductility, large energy absorption capacity and low costs. Externally stiffened CFST beam-columns are not used widely due to insufficient design equations that consider all parameters affecting their behavior. Therefore, effect of various parameters (global, local slenderness ratio and adding hoop stiffeners) on the behavior of CFST columns is studied. An experimental study that includes twenty seven specimens is conducted to determine the effect of those parameters. Load capacities, vertical deflections, vertical strains and horizontal strains are all recorded for every specimen. Ratio between outer diameter (D) of pipes and thickness (t) is chosen to avoid local buckling according to different limits set by codes for the maximum D/t ratio. The study includes two loading methods on composite sections: steel only and steel with concrete. The case of loading on steel only, occurs in the connection zone, while the other load case occurs in steel beam connecting externally with the steel column wall. Two failure mechanisms of CFST columns are observed: yielding and global buckling. At early loading stages, steel wall in composite specimens dilated more than concrete so no full bond was achieved which weakened strength and stiffness of specimens. Adding stiffeners to the specimens increases the ultimate load by up to 25% due to redistribution of stresses between stiffener and steel column wall. Finally, design equations previously prepared are verified and found to be only applicable for medium and long columns.

  • Circular concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns have an advantage over all other sections when they are used in compression members. This paper proposes a new approach for deriving a new empirical equation to predict the axial compressive capacity of circular CFST columns using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The developed ANN model uses 5 input parameters that include the diameter of circular steel tube, the length of the column, the thickness of steel tube, the steel yield strength and the compressive strength of concrete. The only output parameter is the axial compressive capacity. Training and testing the developed ANN model was carried out using 219 available sets of data collected from the experimental results in the literature. An empirical equation is then proposed as an important result of this study, which is practically used to predict the axial compressive capacity of a circular CFST column. To evaluate the performance of the developed ANN model and the proposed equation, the predicted results are compared with those of the empirical equations stated in the current design codes and other models. It is shown that the proposed equation can predict the axial compressive capacity of circular CFST columns more accurately than other methods. This is confirmed by the high accuracy of a large number of existing test results. Finally, the parametric study result is analyzed for the proposed ANN equation to consider the effect of the input parameters on axial compressive strength.

  • Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica and buckling load of tapered columns with shear deformation, subjected to a compressive end load. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-sections are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The differential equations governing the elastica of buckled column are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the rotation at left end and the buckling load, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing the elastica and the buckling loads of the columns are found to be efficient and reliable.
