The resonant column testing is a laboratory testing method to determine the shear modulus and the material damping factor of soils. The method has been widely used for many applications and its importance has been increased. Since the establishment of the testing method in 1963, the low-technology electronic devices for testing and data acquisition have limited the measurement to the amplitude of the linear spectrum. The limitations of the testing method were also attributed to the assumption of the linear-elastic material in the theory of the resonant column testing and to the use of the wave equation for the dynamic response of the specimen. For the better theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, this study derived the equation of motion and provided its solution. This study also proposed the improved data reduction and analysis method for the resonant column testing, based on the advanced data acquisition system and the proposed theoretical solution for the resonant column testing system. For the verification of the proposed data reduction and analysis method, the numerical simulation of the resonant column testing was performed by the finite element analysis. Also, a series of resonant column testing were peformed for Joomunjin sand, which verified the feasibility, of the proposed method and showed the limitations of the conventional data reduction and analysis method.
The stone column method is widely used in Europe as an alternative to conventional pile foundations. Several benefits of using the stone column method include sound performance, low cost, expediency of construction, and liquiefaction resistance, among others. Recently, geosynthetic-encased stone column approach has been developed to improve its' load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. Although such a concept has successfully applied in practice, fundamentals of the method have not been fully explored. This Paper Presents the results of an investigation on the loading carriying capacity of geogrid-encased stone column using a series of 2D finite element analyses. The results of the analyses indicated improved short- and long-term carrying capacity of the geogrid-encased stone column method over the conventional strone column method with no encasing.
The effective length factor of a framed column may be determined by means of the alignment chart procedure. This method is based on many unrealistic assumptions, among which is that all columns have the same stiffness parameter, which is dependent on the length, axial load, and moment of inertia of the column. A new approximate method is developed for the determination of effective length factors for columns in unbraced frames. This method takes into account the effects of inelastic column behaviour, far end conditions of the restraining beams and columns, semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, and differentiated stiffness parameters of columns. This method may be implemented on a microcomputer. A numerical study was carried out to demonstrate the extent to which the involved parameters affect the K factor. The beam-to-column connection stiffness, the stiffness parameter of columns, and the far end conditions of restraining members have a significant effect on the K factor of the column under investigation. The developed method is recommended for design purposes.
An easy and reliable HPLC method was developed to determine allantoin in Dioscorea Rhizoma using cyano columns. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of allantoin were performed successfully by cyano columns (YMC-Pack CN column, Zorbax SB-CN column and Discovery$^{(R)}$ Cyano column). The intraday precision were 0.58 - 3.33% for YMC-Pack CN, 0.41 - 2.20 for Zorbax SB-CN and 0.45 - 1.93% Discovery$^{(R)}$ Cyano columns, while interday variations were 0.09 - 1.84%, 0.04 - 2.59% and 0.87 - 5.18% for YMC-Pack CN, Zorbax SB-CN and Discovery$^{(R)}$ Cyano columns. The recoveries of allantoin were in the range at 98.8 - 102.6% (RSD 1.1 - 1.6%) for YMC-Pack CN column, 99.7 - 110.5% (RSD 1.3 - 4.9%) for Zorbax SB-CN column, and 97.2 - 110.1% (RSD 1.8 - 5.7%) for Discovery$^{(R)}$ Cyano column. The contents of allantoin in four Dioscorea Rhizoma samples were determined by cyano columms and ranged at 4.1-7.1 mg/g dry weight. The present study indicated that HPLC method using cyano column for determining allantoin is a reliable method and this method can be applied to verify allantoin in Dioscorea Rhizoma.
Recently construction work in Korea, demands of favorable condition ground had been increased with industrialization acceleration and economic growth. However, because of limited land space, it was so hard to ensure favorable condition grounds that construction work proceeds until soft ground area on plans of road, railroad and industrial complex. In this case, soft ground improvement was required such as a stone column method. Stone column method, making a compaction pile using crushed stone, is a soft ground improvement method. However, stone column method is difficult to apply to the ground which is not mobilized enough lateral confine pressure because no bulging failure resistance. Hence, in present study, evaluates the stone columns reinforced by geogrid for settlement reduction and wide range of application of stone columns. Triaxial compression tests were conducted for evaluation which is about behavior characteristics of stone column on replacement rate. Then, 3-dimensional numerical analysis were conducted for application of stone column reinforced by geogrid as evaluate behavior characteristics and settlement reduction effect of stone column reinforced by geogrid on reinforcing depth change of geogrid.
The widespread damage to steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) in past major earthquakes have underscored the need to understand the nonlinear inelastic behaviour of such systems. To assess the seismic performance of steel MRF, it is essential to model the nonlinear force-deformation behaviour of beam to column joints. To determine the extent of inelasticity in a beam to column joint, nonlinear finite element analysis is generally carried out, which is computationally involved and demanding. In order to obviate the need of such elaborate analyses, a simplistic method to predict the force-deformation behaviour is required. In this study, a simple, mechanics driven, hand calculation method is proposed to obtain the forcedeformation behaviour of strong axis beam to column moment joints. The force-deformation behaviour for twenty-five interior and exterior beam to column joints, having column to beam strength ratios ranging from 1.2 to 10.99 and 2.4 to 22, respectively, have been obtained. The force-deformation behaviour predicted using the proposed method is compared with the results of finite element analyses. The results show that the proposed method predicts the force-deformation behaviour fairly accurately, with much lesser computational effort. Further the proposed method has been used to conduct Nonlinear Dynamic Time History Analyses of two benchmark frames; close correspondence of results obtained with published results establishes the usefulness and computational accuracy of the method.

Top-down method is widely used for urban area construction for its advantages in reducing environmental problems such as dust and noise, and saving construction cost depending on given conditions of a construction site. Because the excavation and construction of super- and sub-structures of the building have to be proceeded simultaneously, a column has to be embedded prior to excavation. This column is called a pillar column or pre-founded column. Usually a wide flange section is used for these columns. To place the columns, usually the diameter of casing holes needs to be larger than the section of the wide flange itself in order to accommodate a couple of tremie pipes for pouring concrete. In this paper, a newly developed method of using circular pipe as an alternative to the existing wide flange section is discussed. The crucial part of the new method is to develop a connection between the circular column and concrete flat slabs. For shear force transfer from concrete slab to the concrete filled tube (CFT) column, shear jackets with studs and shear bands are proposed. The studs are welded on the jackets at shop and placed around the circular column on site. The shear bands are welded on the outer side of the CFT at shop and inserted into ground with the CFT. Test results and application of the method to a construction site are also provided in this paper.
This paper proposes an optimal design to improve the performance of the intake system by reducing the noise. We adapt the Taguchi method and column merging method for the above design. At the first stage of the design, the length and radius of each component of the current intake system are selected as control factors. Then the $L^{18}$ table of orthogonal array is used to get the effective main factors. At the second stage, the $L^{16}$ table of orthogonal array and the column merging method is combined to analyze subdivided significant factors. We know that the robust design with the column merging method provides better design for noise of intake system than the robust design itself.
The analysis method proposed by PCA is widely used in calculating the column shortening of reinforced and composite columns of a tall building. However, residual creep factor which relates creep strain of reinforced concrete to creep strain of plain concrete is based on Rate of Creep Method (RCM) which has theoretical defects and is considered obsolete. In this paper, a new equation for the residual creep factor based on Age-adjusted Effective Modulus Method (AEMM) which is considered exact and better than RCM is proposed. The residual creep factor by RCM is found to be higher than one by AEMM, which means current PCA method overestimates the shortening of a reinforced concrete column. By using the residual creep factor by AEMM, more exact column shortening of a tall building can be obtainable with a simple modification to PCA method.
Use of stone column for deep ground treatment in soft clay soils is an effective method. The stone column significantly increases load carrying capacity of the soft clay soil. A analysis method for bearing capacity of stone column in soft clay soil is developed. The capacity made by developed method are compared wity observed values from field load test and a reasonable correlation is noted.
