  • In this paper, we present mathematical models for the ring covering problems arising in the design of multi-ring WDM networks. Also, we present efficient algorithms to solve the suggested models. By the computational experiment, our model can solve the medium-sized networks efficiently and shows better performance than the existing heuristic method. Although we propose an efficient method for the column generation procedure, branching rule that does not destroy the column generation structure is unsolved. Further research is required to develop an effective branching rule.

  • Given a tree structured network in which each node has its own demand and also stands for a candidate location of a potential facility, such as plant or warehouse, a capacitated facility location problem on the network (CFLPOT) is to decide capacitated facility locations so that the total demand occurred on the network can be satisfied from those facilities with the minimum cost. In this paper, we first introduce a mixed integer programming formulation for CFLPOT with two additional assumptions, the indivisible demand assumption and the contiguity assumption and then show that it can be reformulated as a tree partitioning problem with an exponential number of variables. We then show that it can be solved in O($n^2b$) time by utilizing the limited column generation method developed by Shaw (1993), where n is the total number of nodes in the network and b is the maximum facility capacity. We also develop a depth-first dynamic programming algorithm with a running time of O(nb) for finding the locally maximal reduced cost which plays an important role in the limited column generation method. Finally, we implement our algorithms on a set of randomly generated problems and report the computational results.

  • Oscillating water column (OWC) type wave power generator system is a power generation system that uses wave energy, a sustainable and renewable energy source. Irregular cycles and wave heights act as factors that make it difficult to secure generation efficiency of the wave power generator system. Recently, research for improving power generation efficiency is being conducted by applying digital twin technology to OWC type wave energy converter system. However, digital twin using sensor data can predict erroneous performance due to uncertainty in the sensor data. Therefore, this study proposes an uncertainty analysis method for sensor data which is used in digital twin to secure the reliability of digital twin prediction results. Uncertainty quantification considering sensor data characteristics and future uncertainty information according to uncertainty propagation were derived mathematically, and confidence interval estimation was performed based on the proposed method.

  • In this study, we propose a signomial classification method with 0-regularization (0-)which seeks a sparse signomial function by solving a mixed-integer program to minimize the weighted sum of the 0-norm of the coefficient vector of the resulting function and the $L_1$-norm of loss caused by the function. $SC_0$ gives an explicit description of the resulting function with a small number of terms in the original input space, which can be used for prediction purposes as well as interpretation purposes. We present a practical implementation of $SC_0$ based on the mixed-integer programming and the column generation procedure previously proposed for the signomial classification method with $SL_1$-regularization. Computational study shows that $SC_0$ gives competitive performance compared to other widely used learning methods for classification.

  • The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of the multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed in two models of same draft. The one is that weights were filled, and the other is that water was filled. The numerical results were estimated by assuming that do not exist internal flow, and the results were compared with the results of experiments.

  • This paper presents an optimization based heuristic algorithm for a tour bus scheduling problem where buses consist of various kinds of sightseeing and commutation services. First, this algorithm transforms the prolem into a vehicle routing problem on whose nodes denote trips and arcs denote connections between trips. Second, a greedy heuritic routing technique is applied to find a good feasible bus-route set. Then the greedy feasible solution is improved by the simplex method using column generation technique. The algorithm provides a better near-optimal solution which gives much reductions in the total tour distance and the number of tour buses.

  • A numerical analysis is made to investigate the wave absorption efficiency of a OWC-type wave power generator. Energy absorption by an OWC(Oscillating Water Column) air-chamber is computed in regular waves, taking account of the oscillating surface-pressure, due to pressure drop, across the duct of the air chamber. The problem is formulated in the scope of potential theory and solved by the Localized Finite Element Method(LFEM), based on the classical variational principle. The efficiency of energy absorption is investigated by. changing wave conditions, sea-bottom slope and pressure drop coefficient.

  • Many kinds of generation systems have been developed to use ocean energy. Among these, with the use of an oscillating water column (OWC) for power generation is attracting attention. The OWC-type wave power generation system converts wave energy into electricity by operating a generator turbine with the oscillating water level in a column of water. There are two ways to convert wave power into electricity using an OWC. One uses a cross-flow turbine using the water level inside the OWC. The other method uses the flow of air in a Wells turbine, which depends on the water level. An experiment was carried out using a 2-D wave tank in order to minimize the number of empirical tests. The design factors were taken from Koo et al. (2012) and the experimental environment assumed by free surface motion. This paper deals with characteristics of two types of wave energy conversion systems combine with a breakwater. One model uses an air-driven Wells turbine and a cross-flow water turbine. The other type uses a cross-flow water turbine. Wave energy converters with OWCs have mostly been studied using air-driven Wells turbines. The efficiency of the cross-flow turbine was about 15% higher than that of the other model, and the water level of the OWC internal chamber for the cross-flow water turbine and air-driven Wells turbine was less than about 40% lower than the one using only the cross-flow water turbine.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of the floating wave power, which is an axisymmetric oscillating water column type, linearized free surface boundary condition considering the influence of PTO (power takeoff) was derived and a finite element numerical model was established. Numerical experiments were carried out by varying cylinder length, skirt length, and depth of water, which are design parameters that can change the resonance of water column in cylinder and heave resonance of the float, which is considered to affect the power generation efficiency. Finally, the basic data necessary for the optimum design of the power generation system were obtained. As a result, the efficiency of the power generation system is dominated by the heave motion resonance of the float rather than the water column resonance in the cylinder, and the resonance condition for the heave motion can be changed efficiently by attaching the skirt to the outside of the buoy.
