Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings built in the 1980s are vulnerable to seismic behavior because they were designed without any consideration of seismic loads. These buildings have widely spaced transverse reinforcements and a short lap splice length of longitudinal reinforcements, which makes them vulnerable to severe damage or even collapse during earthquakes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of bidirectional lateral loads on RC columns with deficient reinforcement details. An experimental test was conducted for two full-scale RC column specimens. The test results of deficient RC columns revealed that bidirectional loading deteriorates the seismic capacity when compared with a column tested unidirectionally. Modeling parameters were extracted from the tested load-displacement response and compared with those proposed in performance-based design standards. The modeling parameters proposed in the standards underestimated the deformation capacity of tested specimens by nearly 50% and overestimated the strength capacity by 15 to 20%.

Seismic design criteria allow enhancing the structural ductility and controlling the damage distribution. Therefore, detailing rules and design requirements given by current seismic codes might be also beneficial to improve the structural robustness. In this paper a comprehensive parametric study devoted to quantifying the effectiveness of seismic detailing for steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRF) in limiting the progressive collapse under column loss scenarios is presented and discussed. The overall structural performance was analysed through nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. With this regard the following cases were examined: (i) MRF structures designed for wind actions according to Eurocode 1; (ii) MRF structures designed for seismic actions according to Eurocode 8. The investigated parameters were (i) the number of storeys; (ii) the interstorey height; (iii) the span length; (iv) the building plan layout; and (v) the column loss scenario. Results show that structures designed according to capacity design principles are less robust than wind designed ones, provided that the connections have the same capacity threshold in both cases. In addition, the numerical outcomes show that both the number of elements above the removed column and stiffness of beams are the key parameters in arresting progressive collapse.
In this study high power Nd:YAG laser welding of structural steel was investigated. For the test steel blocks of $50{\times}50{\times}200mm$ were cut and machined, and bead-on-plate weld was made on the machined surface. Argon, nitrogen, helium, dry air or mixed gases were used to find the effect of shielding conditions on the bead formation. Results demonstrated that there were Fe I rich region and Fe II rich region in the laser induced plasma column based on the spectral analysis with S-2000 field spectrometer The Fe I region was located at the root of the column near keyhole opening. On the other hand, Fe II region was found at the middle of the plasma column. In the Nd:YAG laser welding, Fe I region emitted continuum which had peak value at wave length of around 710nm, and Fe II region had the peak at 580nm. In the welding of steel by $CO_2$ laser, however, no continuum was observed. There showed two groups of strong spikes in the $CO_2$ laser welding; the first group was displayed at the wave band of 450-560nm. This spike group emitted stronger intensity of light and sharper peaks than those group at 680-800nm.

This study accessed the adsorption characteristics of the 11 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) on coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC). The breakthrough appeared first for PFODA and sequentially for PFHDA, PFTeDA, PFTDA, PFDoDA, PFUnDA, PFDA, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS, and PFHpA. The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) for the 11 PFCs with apparent breakthrough points ranged from 2.43 ${\mu}g/g$ (for PFODA) to 64.5 ${\mu}g/g$ (for PFHpA). Carbon usage rate (CUR) for PFODA was 0.291 g/day, 11.2 times higher than that for PFHpA (0.026 g/day). The X/M values for the 11 PFCs were fitted well with a linear regression ($r^2$ = 0.89) by their molecular weight (chain length).

In this study, the development performance of the head bars, which is SD700, was experimentally evaluated at the RC (reinforced concrete) or SFRC (steel fiber reinforced concrete external beam-column joint. A total of 10 specimens were tested, and variables such as steel fibers, length of settlement, effective depth of the beam, and stirrups of the column were planned. As a result of the experiment, the specimens showed side-face blowout, concrete breakout, and shear failure depending on the experimental variables. In the RC series experiments with development length as a variable, it was confirmed that the development strength increased by 26.5~42.2% as the development length increased by 25-80%, which was not proportional to the development length. JD-based experiments with twice the effective depth of beams showed concrete breakout failure, reducing the maximum strength by 31.5% to 62% compared to the reference experiment. The S-series experiment, in which the spacing of the shear reinforcement around the enlarged head reinforcement was 1/2 times that of the reference experiment, increased the maximum strength by 8.4 to 9.7%. The concrete compressive strength of SFRC was evaluated to be 29.3% smaller than the concrete compressive strength of RC, but the development strength of SFRC specimens increased by 7.3% to 12.2%. Accordingly it was confirmed that the development performance of the head bar was greatly improved by reinforcing the steel fiber. Considering the results of 92% and 99% of the experimental maximum strength of the experiment arranged with 92% and 110% of the KDS-based settlement length, it is judged that the safety rate needs to be considered even more. In addition, it is required to present a design formula that considers the effective depth of the beam compared to the development length.
A simple semiquantitative procedure was developed for the determination of sub-ppm level of chromium(VI) in aquatic samples by using an analytical micro-column packed with diphenylcarbazide(DPC) gel beads. DPC gel beads were prepared by swelling XAD-2 resin(115∼150 mesh in dry condition) in ethanol for 10min, packing into a glass column(1.5 mm bore, 65nm length) and adsorbing 1ml of ethanol solution of $2{\times}10^{-3}M$ DPC for 20min at room temperature. When 0.5ml of ethanol solution containing chromium(VI) was passed through the DPC gel column for 40min, the original white color of the reagent gel turned to red-violet from the up-stream of the column. As the length of colored band was proportional to the total amount of chromium(VI) in the sample solution passed through the column, the concentration of chromium(VI) could be determined from the calibration line which had been prepared by using the standard solution. Chromium(VI) ion as small as from 0.1 to 0.8 ppm could be determined with ${\pm}5{\sim}{\pm}15{\%}$ relative errors. Since other interfering cations were few, 100-fold excess of Fe(III), 50-fold excess of Cu(II) could be masked with EDTA. This method was successfully applied to the analysis of chromium(VI) in industrial effluents.

Bubble properties such as size (chord length) and rising velocity were investigated in a bubble column with electrolyte solutions, of which diameter was 0.152m and 2.5m in height, respectively. The size and rising velocity of bubbles were measured by using the dual electrical resistivity probe method. Effects of gas and liquid velocities and ionic strength of liquid phase on the size and rising velocity of bubbles were determined. The bubble size increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid velocity or ionic strength of liquid phase. The rising velocity of bubbles increased with increasing gas velocity and decreased with increasing ionic strength of liquid phase, however, it showed a slight maximum value with varying liquid velocity. The size and rising velocity of bubbles were well correlated with operating variables.
The effectiveness of a retrofitting method for concrete columns with particular weaknesses is experimentally evaluated and presented in this paper. Structural deficiencies namely the inadequacy of transverse reinforcement and short length of lap splices are very common in columns found in structures built prior to the 1960s and 1970s. Recent earthquakes worldwide have caused severe damages and collapses of these structures. Nevertheless, the importance of improving the load transfer capacity between the deficiently lap-spliced bars is usually underestimated during the strengthening procedures applied in old buildings, though critical for the safety of the residents' lives. Thus, the seismic performance of the enhanced columns is frequently overestimated. The retrofitting approach presented herein involves reinforced concrete jacketing of the column sub-assemblages and welding of the lap-spliced bars to prevent the splice failure and conform to the provisions of modern design Codes. The cyclic lateral loading response of poorly confined original column specimens with insufficient lap splices and the seismic behavior of the retrofitted columns are compared. Test results clearly demonstrate that the retrofitting procedure followed is an effective way of significantly improving the seismic performance of substandard columns found in old buildings.
The paper presents shear lag parameters for beam-to-column connections in steel box piers. Previous researches have analyzed beam-to-column connections in steel piers using a shear lag parameter ${\eta}_o$ obtained from a simple beam model, which is not based on a reasonable design assumption. Instead, the current paper proposes a cantilever beam model and has proved the effectiveness through theoretical and experimental studies. The paper examines the inaccuracy of the previous researches by estimating the effective width, the width-span length ratio L/b, and the sectional area ratio S of a cantilever beam. Two different shear lag parameters are defined using the cantilever model and the results are compared each other. The first type of shear lag parameter ${\eta}_c$ of a cantilever beam is derived using additional moments from various stress distribution functions while the other shear lag parameter ${\eta}_{eff}$ of a cantilever beam is defined based on the concept of the effective width. An evaluation method for shear lag stresses has been investigated by comparing analytical stresses with test results. Through the study, it could be observed that the shear lag parameter ${\eta}_{eff}$ agrees with ${\eta}_c$ obtained from the $2^{nd}$ order stress distribution function. Also, it could be observed that the shear lag parameter ${\eta}_c$ using the $4^{th}$ order stress distribution function almost converges to the upper bound of test results.

The overall seismic performance of existing pre 1960-70s reinforced concrete (RC) structures is significantly affected by the inadequate length of columns' lap-spliced reinforcement. Due to this crucial structural deficiency, the cyclic response is dominated by premature bond - slip failure, strength and stiffness degradation, poor energy dissipation capacity and low ductility. Recent earthquakes worldwide highlighted the importance of improving the load transfer mechanism between lap-spliced bars, while it was clearly demonstrated that the failure of lap splices may result in a devastating effect on structural integrity. Extensive experimental and analytical research was carried out herein, to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of strengthening techniques applied to RC columns with lap-spliced reinforcement and also accurately predict the columns' response during an earthquake. Ten large scale cantilever column subassemblages, representative of columns found in existing pre 1970s RC structures, were constructed and strengthened by steel or RC jacketing. The enhanced specimens were imposed to earthquake-type loading and their lateral response was evaluated with respect to the hysteresis of two original and two control subassemblages. The main variables examined were the lap splice length, the steel jacket width and the amount of additional confinement offered by the jackets. Moreover, an analytical formulation proposed by Tsonos (2007a, 2019) was modified appropriately and applied to the lap splice region, to calculate shear stress developed in the concrete and predict if yielding of reinforcement is achieved. The accuracy of the analytical method was checked against experimental results from both the literature and the experimental work included herein.
