  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to help the rapid and effective eye-tests of old patients by developing an optometric questionnaire for the elderly suitable for optical shops in Korea. Methods: We surveyed several previous studies about the age-related changes of the eye, and deduced 10 items which were appropriate for optometric eye-tests. Excluding the items that could be easily found in a routine eye-test and that was just physiological changes, we principally chose anomaly items which could be catched by simple oral questions. The questionnaire was mainly composed of clinically important items that were frequently observed. Results: To diagnose optometric symptoms related to eye-aging, we listed 15 questions on the questionnaire for the elderly. Each of the 15 questions was respectively about the decline in the amplitude of accommodation (no.1), anisometropia (no.2), xerophthalmia (no.3), muscae volitantes (no.4-5), dark adaptation (no.6) light and dark adaptation (no.7), contrast sensitivity (no.8), contrast sensitivity and anisometropia (no.9), contrast sensitivity and colour vision (no.10), the field of view (no.11), stereoscopic vision (no.12), colour vision (no.13), cataract (no.14), and presbyopia (no.15). Each question was easy to understand and related to the generally observed symptoms. Conclusions: Our optometric questionnaire for the elderly, which was developed by the procedure mentioned above, was expected to be a help for examining the aging eye and offer the basis of eye-tests of older patients in Korean optical shops.

  • The small dining tables which are made of bamboo were deteriorated condition when those were excavated from Mado shipwreck No.1. Therefore, preliminary test was conducted for consolidation (Sucrose, Dammar gum, Cetyl alcohol and Polyethylene glycol 4000) then impregnated and vacuum freeze dried. After the test, since the treatment with vacuum freeze drying using an aqueous solution of PEG 4000 keep the shape well the most and present bright colour, waterlogged archaeological bamboo conserved with vacuum freeze drying using an aqueous solution of PEG 4000. One bamboo table consolidated with soluble PEG 4000 from 10% to 40%, then vacuum freeze dried. Another impregnated with soluble PEG 4000 from 10% to 70%. After that, it was separated and held in polycarbonate sheet for preventing bending during dry. The small dining tables are the three dimensional shapes and have some loss. Therefore the mounting for support tables were necessary which are made of acrylic sheet. It keep the table shape and make it convenient for storage and handling.

  • Considerable attention has been given to the accuracy of HER-2 testing and the correlation between the results of different testing methods. This interest reflects the growing importance of HER-2 status in the management of patients with breast cancer. In this study the detection of HER-2 gene and centromere 17 status was evaluated using dual-colour primed in situ labelling (PRINS) in comparison with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). These two methods were evaluated on a series of 27 formalin fixed paraffin embedded breast carcinoma tumours, previously tested for protein overexpression by HercepTest (grouped into Hercep 1+/0, 2+ and 3+). HER-2 gene amplification (ratio${\geq}2.2$) by PRINS was found in 3:3, 6:21 and 0:3 in IHC 3+, 2+ and 1+/0 cases, respectively. Comparing FISH and IHC (immunohistochemistry), showed the same results as for PRINS and IHC. Chromosome 17 aneusomy was found in 10 of 21 IHC 2+ cases (47.6%), of which 1 (10%) showed hypodisomy (chromosome 17 copy number per cell${\leq}1.75$), 7 (70%) showed low polysomy (chromosome 17 copy number per cell=2.26 - 3.75) and 2 (20%) showed high polysomy (chromosome 17 copy number per cell ${\geq}3.76$). The overall concordance of detection of HER-2 gene amplification by FISH and PRINS was 100% (27:27). Furthermore, both the level of HER-2 amplification and copy number of CEN17 analysis results correlated well between the two methods. In conclusion, PRINS is a reliable, reproducible technique and in our opinion can be used as an additional test to determine HER-2 status in breast tumours.

  • Digital cable TV(DCATV) is totally different with a existing TV which is passive, and can pick the contents anytime we want. It is very popular in many houses and we can see bright future with this. This study will show a standard that is a suitable and convenient VOD menu category for 20's through a various usability test. Moreover it will be provided new menu style and GUI through the preferences. For this, we found expected problems first through the heuristic analysis and did iterative usability test to verify and improve these problems. As a result of that, we improved errors of VOD menu structure and suggested new menu style including metaphor, colour and icon users can recognize easily. That is, VOD categories should be grouped among definite meanings. And we found using convenience is more important than new discovery of method on menu style for experienced users. This study can be not only based data when DCATV menu is renewed but also can be used as a reference data when designing other DCATV menu.

  • Cutting oils are emulsionable fluids widely used in metal working processes. Their composition is mineral oil, water, and additives (fatty acids, surfactants, biocides, etc.) generating a toxic waste after a long use. Cutting oils also affect colour, taste and odour of water, making it undesirable for domestic and industrial uses. In these days, conventional treatment methods as evaporation, membrane separation or chemical separation have major disadvantages since they generate a concentrated stream that is more harmful than the original waste. In this study, our purpose is to reduce cutting oils by using biological treatment. Eighty one strains were isolated from cutting waste oil of industrial waste water sludge under aerobic conditions. Among these strains, KS47, which removed 90.4% cutting oil in 48 hr, was obtained by screening test under aerobic conditions(pH 7, $28^{\circ}C$). KS47 was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa according to morphological, physiological and biochemical properties, 16S rDNA sequence, and fatty acid analysis. P. aeruginosa KS47 could utilize cutting oil as carbon source. In batch test, we obtained optimal degradation conditions(1.5 g/L cell concentration, pH 7, and temperature $30^{\circ}C$). Under the optimal conditions, 1,060 mg/L cutting oil was removed 83.7% (74.1 mg/L/hr).

  • The nature of distant faint blue field galaxies remains a mystery, despite the fact that much attention has been devoted to this subject in the last decade. Galaxy counts, particularly those in the optical and near ultraviolet bandpasses, have been demonstrated to be well in excess of those expected in the 'no-evolution' scenario. This has usually been taken to imply that galaxies were brighter in the past, presumably due to a higher rate of star formation. More recently, redshift surveys of galaxies as faint as B$\~$24 have shown that the mean redshift of faint blue galaxies is lower than that predicted by standard evolutionary models (de-signed to fit the galaxy counts). The galaxy number count data and redshift data suggest that evolutionary effects are most prominent at the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. While these data constrain the form of evolution of the overall luminosity function, they do not constrain evolution in individual galaxies. We are carrying out a series of observations as part of a long-term program aimed at a better understanding of the nature and amount of luminosity evolution in individual galaxies. Our study uses the luminosity-linewidth relation (Tully-Fisher relation) for disk galaxies as a tool to study luminosity evolution. Several studies of a related nature are being carried out by other groups. A specific experiment to test a 'no-evolution' hypothesis is presented here. We have used the AUTOFIB multifibre spectro-graph on the 4-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the Rutgers Fabry-Perot imager on the Cerro Tolalo lnteramerican Observatory (CTIO) 4-metre tele-scope to measure the internal kinematics of a representative sample of faint blue field galaxies in the red-shift range z = 0.15-0.4. The emission line profiles of [OII] and [OIII] in a typical sample galaxy are significantly broader than the instrumental resolution (100-120 km $s^{-l}$), and it is possible to make a reliable de-termination of the linewidth. Detailed and realistic simulations based on the properties of nearby, low-luminosity spirals are used to convert the measured linewidth into an estimate of the characteristic rotation speed, making statistical corrections for the effects of inclination, non-uniform distribution of ionized gas, rotation curve shape, finite fibre aperture, etc.. The (corrected) mean characteristic rotation speed for our distant galaxy sample is compared to the mean rotation speed of local galaxies of comparable blue luminosity and colour. The typical galaxy in our distant sample has a B-band luminosity of about 0.25 L$\ast$ and a colour that corresponds to the Sb-Sd/Im range of Hub-ble types. Details of the AUTOFIB fibre spectroscopic study are described by Rix et al. (1996). Follow-up deep near infrared imaging with the 10-metre Keck tele-scope+ NIRC combination and high angular resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 are being used to determine the structural and orientation parameters of galaxies on an individual basis. This information is being combined with the spatially resolved CTIO Fabry-Perot data to study the internal kinematics of distant galaxies (Ing et al. 1996). The two main questions addressed by these (preliminary studies) are: 1. Do galaxies of a given luminosity and colour have the same characteristic rotation speed in the distant and local Universe? The distant galaxies in our AUTOFIB sample have a mean characteristic rotation speed of $\~$70 km $s^{-l}$ after correction for measurement bias (Fig. 1); this is inconsistent with the characteristic rotation speed of local galaxies of comparable photometric proper-ties (105 km $s^{-l}$) at the > $99\%$ significance level (Fig. 2). A straightforward explanation for this discrepancy is that faint blue galaxies were about 1-1.5 mag brighter (in the B band) at z $\~$ 0.25 than their present-day counterparts. 2. What is the nature of the internal kinematics of faint field galaxies? The linewidths of these faint galaxies appear to be dominated by the global disk rotation. The larger galaxies in our sample are about 2"-.5" in diameter so one can get direct insight into the nature of their internal velocity field from the $\~$ I" seeing CTIO Fabry-Perot data. A montage of Fabry-Perot data is shown in Fig. 3. The linewidths are too large (by. $5\sigma$) to be caused by turbulence in giant HII regions.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the best ratio of tomato sauce with chili pepper powder. The investigation of food quality after preparing tomato sauce with chili pepper powder shall be as follows. Moisture was reduced when red chili pepper powder were added gradually, although protein, fat, ash, and carbohydrates were increased. pH values decreased as red chili pepper increased as organic acid was reduced. In case of colour, L-value and a-value were reduced, although b-value increased. Lycopene and ${\beta}$-carotene increased by adding red chili pepper by virtue of the existence of carotenoid. Polyphenol, flavonoid, and DPPH radical also increased with the addition of red chili pepper as a result of red chili pepper's antioxidant property. In an attribute difference test, smoothness showed a low score when red pepper powder was added, but graininess returned a high score as red pepper powder absorbed moisture. The result of the sensory test for sauce, TC2 showed the best score in overall acceptance, while TC3 showed the best score for sauce with pasta in overall acceptance. Tomato sauce with 3% of red pepper powder was shown to have the most acceptable quality and should have powerful manufacture competitiveness.

  • In this study, the mechanical and sensory quality characteristics of bar rice cake, Gareadduk, have been measured from the reference group and the sample groups with 10%, 20% 30% and 40% of defatted rice, containing high dietary fiber. From the general properties of rice powder and defatted rice, the crude protein, crude fat and crude ash of defatted rice were higher than those of rice powder, and especially dietary fiber content of defatted rice was 24.6%, 7-8 times higher than that of rice powder. The moisture content of Gareadduk has declined with increased mixing rate of defatted rice. According to the chromatography test result, its brightness, L-value has declined with increased mixing rate of defatted rice while there was no significant difference for different storage periods. Its redness, a-value, has declined with increased mixing rate of defatted rice and longer storage periods. Its yellowness, b-value, has inclined with increased mixing rate of defatted rice and longer storage periods, which showed no significant difference. Its hardness has significantly increased with increased mixing rate of defatted rice. Also, its hardness has gradually increased with longer storage periods. From the elasticity and viscosity test result, there was no specific tendency, but the chewiness of the sample groups was higher than that of the reference group. The sensory test result showed that the colour and scent of bar rice cake, Gareadduk, were getting stronger with increased mixing rate of defatted rice. The taste of the sample groups was stronger than that of the reference group, and the overall acceptability of the sample groups showed the order of 20%> 30%> 40%> 10%.

  • This study evaluated the attitudes of the Korean population towards sunscreen use through the Health Belief Model (HBM) construct and investigated the psychological factors that influence sunscreen use. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted from 1 November 2023 to 1 January 2024, and a total of 303 participants were collected. The collected data were analysed using SPSS v. 25.0 programme using Cronbach's 𝛼, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, independent samples t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study showed that the mean score of sunscreen use was 3.26±1.384 out of 5, and there was a significant correlation between the variables of the health belief model and sunscreen use (p<.01). Gender, age, and skin colour were also associated with each variable, with women, the elderly, and those with lighter skin tending to be more proactive in sun protection. Multiple regression analyses revealed that self-efficacy (𝛽=.629, p<.001) and perceived vulnerability (𝛽=.139, p<.001), sub-factors of the Health Belief Model, had a statistically significant positive effect on sunscreen use, while perceived barriers (𝛽=-.261, p<.001) had a statistically significant negative effect on sunscreen use. These results may have important theoretical implications for the development and implementation of educational programmes to promote sunscreen use by providing insight into the psychosocial factors that influence sun protection.

  • For the purpose of obtaining polycarbonate film which blocks ultra-violet ion beam was irradiated onto the surface of PC film. This method has gotten several advantages compared with the techniques, such as the protection of changes in film thickness and UV blocking material deposited onto a base film. In order to investigate UV blocking PC film, the optical and chemical characteristics, surface morphology and lightfastness were confirmed by UV/Vis, FTIR(ATR) spectroscopy, AFM, and Q-UV fasoess analyses. As a result, it was shown that the modified PC film was able to block almost all of UV region and easily control the degree of UV block. The optical changes in the film were attributed to chemical changes in PC surface by ion beam irradiation. Moreover, we expect that the modified PC film can durably block UV due to no changes in colour and UV transmittance after UV fastness test.
