  • This study compared the domestic and international commercial design patterns and domestic consumer preferences for wetsuit designs to develop a user-centered wetsuit design. An analysis of the domestic and international design elements for 1,802 wetsuits sold online over the past three years showed that the most frequent shapes, dominant colors, and patterns were the same, as consumers tended to buy full suits that were black or had geometric patterns. Dominant colors and assort/accent colors were different from the survey results. Men's wetsuits used fewer colors and patterns than women's suits. Domestic wetsuits used fewer patterns than those sold abroad; in addition, colors were applied differently. A consumer preference survey conducted on 213 male and female consumers in their 20s and their 50s in Korea indicated that 53.5% of respondents were the most affected by the shape when choosing a wetsuit design. The preferred color scheme was two colors, with a vivid tone used as an accent color. The factor analysis results on wetsuit design preference uncovered the six factors: individuality, display, function, acceptance, imitation, and comparison. An independent sample t-test also showed that men perceive individuality, imitations, and comparison factors higher than women.

  • Kernel-based mean-shift object tracking has gained more interests nowadays, with the aid of its feasibility of reliable real-time implementation of object tracking. This algorithm calculates the best mean-shift vector based on the color histogram similarity between target model and target candidate models, where the color histograms are usually produced after uniform color-space quantization for the implementation of real-time tracker. However, when the image of target model has a reduced contrast, such uniform quantization produces the histogram model having large values only for a few histogram bins, resulting in a reduced accuracy of similarity comparison. To solve this problem, a non-uniform quantization algorithm has been proposed, but it is hard to apply to real-time tracking applications due to its high complexity. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast non-uniform color-space quantization method using the histogram equalization, providing an adjusted histogram distribution such that the bins of target model histogram have as many meaningful values as possible. Using the proposed method, the number of bins involved in similarity comparison has been increased, resulting in an enhanced accuracy of the proposed mean-shift tracker. Simulations with various test videos demonstrate the proposed algorithm provides similar or better tracking results to the previous non-uniform quantization scheme with significantly reduced computation complexity.

  • This paper presents a joint demosaicking and arbitrary-ratio down sampling algorithm for color filter array (CFA) images. Color demosaiking is a necessary part of image signal processing pipeline for many types of digital image recording system using single sensor. Also, such as smart phone, obtained high resolution image from image sensor has to be down-sampled to be displayed on the screen. The conventional solution is "Demosaicking first and down sampling later". However, this scheme requires a significant amount of memory and computational cost. Also, artifacts can be introduced or details get damaged during demosaicking and down sampling process. In this paper, we propose a method in which demosaicking and down sampling are working simultaneously. We use inverse mapping of Bayer CFA and then joint demosaicking and down sampling with arbitrary-ratio scheme based on signal decomposition of high and low frequency component in input data. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm has better image quality performance and much less computational cost than those of conventional solution.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive FEC scheme in visible light communication using white LED. To this end, we investigate the red, green and blue mixing ratio of white LED in order to achieve the white color, and the mixing ratio of those wavelength can be defined as 4 types. Based on those properties, the FEC technique is applied to the wavelength band with the lowest mixing ratio according to mixing ratio types. At that point, we use a LDPC channel coding scheme as the FEC technique. Therefore, the proposed system can mitigate the reduction of data rate and improve total BER performance.

  • In this paper, we describe an adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo-based particle filter that effectively addresses real-time multi-face tracking on mobile platforms. Because traditional approaches based on a particle filter require an enormous number of particles, the processing time is high. This is a serious issue, especially on low performance devices such as mobile phones. To resolve this problem, we developed a tracker that includes a more sophisticated likelihood model to reduce the number of particles and maintain the identity of the tracked faces. In our proposed tracker, the number of particles is adjusted during the sampling process using an adaptive sampling scheme. The adaptive sampling scheme is designed based on the average acceptance ratio of sampled particles of each face. Moreover, a likelihood model based on color information is combined with corner features to improve the accuracy of the sample measurement. The proposed tracker applied on various videos confirmed a significant decrease in processing time compared to traditional approaches.

  • This paper introduces various applications and contents of digital signage, and analyzes conventional communication techniques to increase communication range. To realize digital signage in long distance, this paper proposes a hybrid modulation scheme and analyzes its performance. To verify its performance in real channel environment, we mapped symbols and experimented data transmission and reception with a visible light communication module with USRP. As a result, we confirmed a data receiving range and power of transmission and reception of the hybrid modulation mode. Also, we showed that the proposed modulation scheme has better performance of communication range and power efficiency than that of the conventional QAM technique.

  • In order to realize the high luminance and luminous efficacy MFFLs for LCD backlights, we optimized the phosphor profile to enlarge the surface area. The MFFL with the new phosphor profile shows a very wide luminance range from 2,600 to 17,000 nit with the corresponding luminous efficacy from 66 to 32.5 lm/W. The results were obtained with the color coordinate of the phosphor to be around (0.25, 0.23). And the single cell is expanded into a multi-structured configuration to realize a 32 inch-sized lamp by a simple repetition of the single cells, and a new driving scheme is proposed for an adaptive local dimming and scanning drive using dual auxiliary electrodes and bipolar drive scheme. Especially the ultra high luminance and luminous efficacy results suggest the duty time of illumination of the backlight unit can be significantly reduced.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient hardware-supported antialiasing algorithm and its rendering scheme. The proposed method can efficiently reduce the required memory bandwidth as well as memory size compared to a conventional supersampling when rendering 3D models. In addition, it can provide almost the same high quality scenes as supersampling does. In this paper, we have introduced the RUF (Recently Used Fragment) buffer that stores some or whole parts of a fragment or two more the merged results of fragments that recently used in color calculation. We have also proposed a color calculation algorithm to deteriorate the image quality as referencing the RUF buffer. Because of the efficiency presented in the proposed algorithm, the more number of sampling points increases the more memory saving ratio we can gain relative to the conventional supersampling. In our simulation, the proposed method can reduce the amount of memory size by 31% and the memory bandwidth by 11% with a moderate pixel color difference of 1.3% compared to supersampling for 8 sparse sampling points.

  • People are making multilateral efforts to create beautiful agricultural landscapes. In farming villages, however, large-scale facilities or houses do not blend in with the natural environment because of their outer colors, which are mostly primary colors that are not chosen in consideration of the natural environment. This was addressed in the three following steps: 1) Research tool was used to identify predominant colors and images that represent various types of rural areas; 2) landscape experts conducted a feasibility study and pilot study on using these colors; and 3) the main study was done by investigating how local people and out-of-town visitors perceive the colors. The villages involved in the development projects were mostly represented by achromatic colors, meaning white, black, and variations of gray. Also, adjectives such as "modern" were shown to be keywords that symbolize the atmosphere. Less developed villages had more greenish colors and "natural" as their keyword. Developed villages in suburban areas were mainly represented by shades of blue and green, while less developed ones were mainly represented by green and yellow. In special types of rural areas, developed and developing were represented by achromatic and green colors, whereas less developed ones were represented by green and blue. Respondents were also asked 1) whether they were satisfied with their village's current overall color scheme and 2) whether they thought there was harmony between the surrounding natural environment and artificial structures. People responded with "so so" for the first question, while some answered "not good enough" and "no" for the second.

  • In this paper, we propose a combined region-based image retrieval system using EHD(Edge Histogram Descriptor) and CLD(Color Layout Descriptor) of MPEG-7 descriptors. The combined descriptor can efficiently describe edge and color features in terms of sub-image regions. That is, the basic unit for the selection of the region-of-interest (ROI) in the image is the sub-image block of the EHD, which corresponds to 16 (i.e., $4{\times}4)$ non-overlapping image blocks in the image space. This implies that, to have a one-to-one region correspondence between ELE and CLD, we need to take an $8{\times}8$ inverse DCT (IDCT) for the CLD. Experimental results show that the proposed retrieval scheme can be used for image retrieval with the ROI based image retrieval for MPEG-7 indexed images.
