  • Object tracking in video sequences is a challenging task and has various applications. Particle filtering has been proven very successful for non-Gaussian and non-linear estimation problems. In this study, we first try to develop a color-based particle filter. In this approach, the color distributions of video frames are integrated into particle filtering. Color distributions are applied because of their robustness and computational efficiency. The model of the particle filter is defined by the color information of the tracked object. The model is compared with the current hypotheses of the particle filter using the Bhattacharyya coefficient. The proposed tracking method directly incorporates the scale and motion changes of the objects. Experimental results have been presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed system.

  • In commercial digital-cameras, color-filter filters light according to wavelength range of color filter array (CFA) and the filtered intensities contain color information of light. Then, output data of CFA is transformed to final rendered image through demosaicing process. In image processing of digital-camera, the quality of the final rendered image is affected by optical cross talk of CFA, kind of CFA pattern etc. Basically, pattern of CFA plays important role in image quality of final image rendered by digital-camera. Therefore, an evaluation system capable of quantitatively evaluating CFA is needed. This paper proposes a novel evaluation system using existing and proposed image metrics for evaluating CFAs of digital-camera. Proposed CFA evaluation system consist of color difference in CIELAB and S-CIELAB, Structure SImilarity (SSIM), MTF50, moire starting point (MSP), and subjective preference (SP). MSP and SP are newly designed for the proposed evaluation system. Proposed evaluation system is expressed in polar coordinates to analyze the characteristics of CFA objectively and intuitively. Through simulations, we confirmed that proposed CFA evaluation system can objectively assess performance of developed CFAs.

  • In this study, we intended to design the optimal Fermi filter to apply the k-space date that is knee image of the rheumatoid arthritis patient acquired from the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) instrument. After deciding the suitable coefficient for the Fermi filter, the results were compared with modified Fermi filter and inverse Chebyshev filter, Chebyshev filter, Elliptic filter and Butterworth filter. Firstly, in comparison to the results, the radiologist confirmed that modified Fermi filter was best decision for boundary of the rheumatoid arthritis images. The number of the black voxels of the histogram showed the quantity of the results. At the proposed filter images, numbers of the blacks voxels were statistically decreased. That meant voxels only appeared the black color were changed to others voxels color. Because the number of the total voxels was fixed, the area appeared block color could be effected to the other areas. If the modified Fermi filter were used for rheumatoid arthritis patient, the result will be better than other filters.

  • The paper presents a fuzzy based impulse noise filter for both gray scale and color images. The proposed approach is based on the technique of boundary discriminative noise detection. The algorithm is a multi-step process comprising detection, filtering and color correction stages. The detection procedure classifies the pixels as corrupted and uncorrupted by computing decision boundaries, which are fuzzified to improve the outputs obtained. In the case of color images, a correction term is added by examining the interactions between the color components for further improvement. Quantitative and qualitative analysis, performed on standard gray scale and color image, shows improved performance of the proposed technique over existing state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and color difference metrics. The analysis proves the applicability of the proposed algorithm to random valued impulse noise.

  • Most commercial digital still cameras use a single sensor array (e.g., CMOS or CCD) with color filter array (CFA) to reduce the cost and size. Since the image obtained with CFA has only one color value per pixel, the demosaicing is needed to acquire missing two color values. Although many demosaicing methods have been proposed, they still have artifacts such as rainbow and zippering artifact. In this paper, we propose the simple demosaicing algorithm using tendency of neighbor pixels with the enhanced weighting function. In the experimental results, our algorithm shows much better subjective qualities of the images than conventional demosaicing algorithm and improves objective qualities.

  • This paper describes a real-time face tracking system using effective detector and Kalman filter. In the proposed system, an image is separated into a background and an object using a real-time updated face color for effective face detection. The face features are extracted using the five types of simple Haar-like features. The extracted features are reinterpreted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and interpreted principal components are used for Support Vector Machine (SVM) that classifies the faces and non-faces. The moving face is traced with Kalman filter, which uses the static information of the detected faces and the dynamic information of changes between previous and current frames. The proposed system sets up an initial skin color and updates a region of a skin color through a moving skin color in a real time. It is possible to remove a background which has a similar color with a skin through updating a skin color in a real time. Also, as reducing a potential-face region using a skin color, the performance is increased up to 50% when comparing to the case of extracting features from a whole region.

  • In this paper, we propose a new color interpolation method based on trilateral filter approach, which not only preserve the high-frequency components(image edge) while interpolating the missing raw data of color image(bayer data pattern), but also immune to the image noise components and better preserve the detail of the low-frequency components. The method is the trilateral filter approach applying a gradient to the low frequency components of the image signal in order to preserve the high-frequency components and the detail of the low-frequency components through the measure of the freedom of similarity among adjacent pixels. And also we perform Gaussian smoothing to the interpolated image data in order to robust to the noise. In this paper, we compare the conventional demosaicing algorithm and the proposed algorithm using 10 test images in terms of hue MAD, saturation MAD and CPSNR for the objective evaluation, and verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • Instead of using three charge-coupled devices (CCDs) for the corresponding color channels, most consumer's most consummer's color macmorders reconstruct color images by using only one CCD with a color filter array (CFA), which periodically samples different color signals. By this reson the resulting image cannot produce the full resolution of the input image. More sepecifically, a single-CCD color camcorder reconstructs red, greed, and blue color channels from a color filter array followed by a CCD. During the reconstruction process, color cross-talk among channels (interchannel distortion) and eriodically space-verying blur (intrachannel distortion) occur. The proposed restoration system reduces distortions due to interchannel interference, and then restores each color channel by removing the corresponding intrachannel distortion. Experimental results show that the proposedsystem provides the improved image in oth objective and subjective senses. A major advantage of the proposed system is feasible to real-time image improvement because it can be implemented by a finite impulse response (FIR) filter structure.

  • In this paper, a highly efficient GMR(guided-mode resonant) color filter is proposed and implemented. The GMR color filter consists of $Si_3N_4/air$ layers containing complementary fixed and mobile gratings. The device is designed using RETT(rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory) and a grating structure operating in subwavelength. The numerical result reveals that the color filter has a tuning capability of about 35 nm over the $0.45{\mu}m{\sim}0.55{\mu}m$ range for blue-green color and across $0.6{\mu}m{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$ range for red color. Furthermore, The color filters have a spectral bandwidth of about 8 nm with efficiencies of 99%, 98%, and 99% at the center wavelength of blue, green, and red color, respectively, and these are higher efficiencies than reported in the literature previously.

  • Most digital cameras use a single image sensor with Color Filter Array(CFA) for the advantage of costs and speed. The various color interpolation(demosaicing) algorithms are researched to reconstruct a full representation of the image. In this paper, we proposed a method of demosaicing about using weighted directional filter for vertical, horizontal, and diagonal direction edge. The method considered the efficiency of hardware resources for hardware implementation. The performance of proposed method was confirmed by comparing the conventional method in experiments using 24 Kodak test images. The proposed method was designed by Verilog HDL and was verified by using Virtex4 FPGA boards and CMOS Image Sensor.
