  • Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for observing organic molecules, as it combines sensitive vibrational excitations with a non-destructive probe. However, gaseous volatile compounds in the air are challenging to detect, as they are not easy to immobilize in a sensing device and give enough signal by themselves. In this study, we fabricated a thin nanocrystalline metal-organic framework (nMOF) film on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) substrate to enhance the IR vibration signal of the gaseous volatile compounds captured within the nMOF pores. Specifically, we synthesized nanocrystalline HKUST-1 (nHKUST-1) particles of ca. 80 nm diameter and used a colloidal dispersion of these particles to fabricate nHKUST-1 films by a spin-coating process. After finding that benzene was readily adsorbed onto nHKUST-1, an nHKUST-1 film deposited on a plasmonic Au substrate was successfully applied to the IR detection of gaseous benzene in air using surface-enhanced IR spectroscopy.

  • Nano-sized iron colloids are formed as acid mine drainage is exposed to surface environments and is introduced into surrounding water bodies. These iron nanomaterials invoke aesthetic contamination as well as adverse effects on aqueous ecosystems. In order to control them, the characteristics of their behaviour should be understood first, but the cumulative research outputs up to now are much less than the expected. Using zero-valent iron (ZVI) and magnetite, this study aims to investigate the behaviour of iron nanomaterials according to the change in the composition and pH of background electrolyte and the concentration of natural organic matter (NOM). The size and surface zeta potential of iron nanomaterials were measured using dynamic light scattering. Characteristic behaviour, such as aggregation and dispersion was compared each other based on the DLVO (Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek) theory. Whereas iron nanomaterials showed a strong tendency of aggregation at the pH near point of zero charge (PZC) due to electrostatic attraction between particles, their dispersions became dominant at the pH which was higher or lower than PZC. In addition, the behaviour of iron nanomaterials was likely to be more significantly influenced by cations than anions in the electrolyte solutions. Particularly, it was observed that divalent cation influenced more effectively than monovalent cation in electrostatic attraction and repulsion between particles. It was also confirmed that the NOM enhanced the dispersion nanomaterials with increasing the negative charge of nanomaterials by coating on their surface. Under identical conditions, ZVI aggregated more easily than magnetite, and which would be attributed to the lower stability and larger reactivity of ZVI.

  • The characteristics of the heavy metal contamination in the soils affected by the tailings of the Palbong mine have been studied. The soils in the studied area consist mostly of loam by the particle size analysis, but a little of it, located near the stream, consist of loamy sand to sandy loam, finally to loam downward. The organic contents of soils are significantly low aoom 2 percent and the pH is in acidic ranging 6.0 $\pm$ 0.1. The samples of the parent rocks, the normal soils, the tailings and the channel deposits from the studied area were chemically analysed. From the result, the heavy metal concenlration of the soils is a little Jow compared with that of the parent rocks, shows the hydrologic process of the surface and the groundwater. The contamination of the tailings from the ore mining are high in lead, copper and arsenic. In the channel deposits the concenlrations of lead and copper are abnormally high but that of arsenic is uniquely low. And most of heavy metal contamination are decreased with the distance from the mine. It is caused by the properties of the surface and the ground water during the process of the heavy metal migration. The correlation-coefficient between sand and silt contents and the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Pb are significant but the amounts of As and Hg are increased with the clay contents. The dispersion of the heavy metals with the distance shows that the concentrations of them in the soils sampled at distance of 100 m to 200 m along the stream started near the Palbong mine are extremely high compared with those from other distances. These discrepancies are significant in Cd, Cu, Pb and Hg, but low in As. All the samples contain below detection limit of Cr+6 In the present stream water the concentrations of the heavy metals are not detected. So, it is interpreted that the concentrations in the soils are caused by the activities of the mining during the operation and have been continued by the dispersion from the tailings since after the closure of the mining, especially by the surface and ground water. The concentrations are diminished with the distance from the mining site, but in the interval of 800-2000 m increases abruptly. In the soil samples counted on the dispersion direction by wind, the lowering of the concentration is relatively uniform with the distance from the mining site. So, the rapid increase of the heavy metal concentrations is presumed to have been caused by the ground-water movement. In the migration of the heavy metals, the groundwater conditions, such as pH, Eh, the contents of colloidal particles, and Mn and Fe oxides are closely involveo. Integrating with these factors, it is interpreted that the groundwater conditions which have caused the heavy metal contamination of the studied area are those that the pH is about 3 in oxidized conditions, the contents of the colloidal particles are low, and Mn and Fe oxides are not involved in the migration of the heavy metals. Meanwhile, the vegetables growing on the soils in the studied area are not affected by the contamination of the heavy metals.

  • Composite particles of porous silica and cerium oxide nanoparticles blocking UV/blue light were prepared through a dry coating process. Various composite particles were prepared by varying conditions such as the mixing ratio of cerium oxide and silica, and the chamber rotating speed of mechano fusion system. The surface morphology of the composite particles was observed with SEM and the composition was analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). When the cerium oxide/silica composite particles were dispersed in water, the transparency and dispersion stability of the colloidal solution were improved. In addition, the fluidity and spreadability of the particle powder were enhanced by making composite particles. These results show that cerium oxide/silica composite particles can be used as functional cosmetic ingredients for UV/blue light protection.

  • Aluminium titanate-mullite composites with varying chemical compositions were prepared by the stepwise hydrolysis of $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$, and $Ti(OC_2H_5)_4$in $AI_2O_3$ ethanolic colloidal dispersion. Sintered bodies having 20-50~01% mullite at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2h have shown, that it is possible to develop an aluminium titanate with moderately high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient. This was obtained by inhibiting grain site of aluminium titanate with mullite and microcracks. Those with 80-70vol % aluminium titanate have excellent thermal shock resistance and has room-temperature strengths of 31-45MPa. The relation between thermal shock resistance and strength, Young's modulus, sound velocity and thermal expansion coefficient was discussed.

  • In the dairy industry, natural plant-based powders are widely used to develop flavor and functionality. However, most of these ingredients are water-insoluble; therefore, emulsification is essential. In this study, the efficacy of high pressure homogenization (HPH) on natural plant (chocolate or vanilla)-based model emulsions was investigated. The particle size, electrical conductivity, Brix, pH, and color were analyzed after HPH. HPH significantly decreased the particle size of chocolate-based emulsions as a function of elevated pressures (20-100 MPa). HPH decreased the mean particle size of chocolate-based emulsions from 29.01 μm to 5.12 μm, and that of vanilla-based emulsions from 4.18 μm to 2.44 μm. Electrical conductivity increased as a function of the elevated pressures after HPH, for both chocolate- and vanilla-based model emulsions. HPH at 100 MPa increased the electrical conductivity of chocolate-based model emulsions from 0.570 S/m to 0.680 S/m, and that of vanilla-based model emulsions from 0.573 S/m to 0.601 S/m. Increased electrical conductivity would be attributed to colloidal phase modification and dispersion of oil globules. Brix of both chocolate- and vanilla-based model emulsions gradually increased as a function of the HPH pressure. Thus, HPH increased the solubility of plant-based powders by decreasing the particle size. This study demonstrated the potential use of HPH for enhancing the emulsification process and stability of the natural plant powders for applications with dairy products.

  • In Korea, the annual production of watermelon and cantaloupe melon is around 110,000 to 170,000 Metric Tons, and as the fruit does not keep well, studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of preservation in the form of natural juice or lactic fermented juice. The results obtained in these studies are summarized as follows: (1) The average yield of juice obtained from watermelon was 56.2%, and from cantaloupe melon 65.8%, of the fresh weight. (2) The colloidal components of watermelon juice separated from the juice by sedimentation within 24 hours. Cantaloupe melon juice gave a stable colloidal dispersion. (3) No change in the colour of the juices was detected by sensory evaluation or instrumental methods after they were treated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. (4) The addition of canesugar to give a total solids content of 11/13 Brix gave juices which were preferred by most tasters. (5) Lactic fermentation of natural juices pasteurised at $90^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes, and inoculated with a pure culture of lactic acid bacteria proceeded without interference from competing microorganisms. (6) Sensory evaluation of lactic fermented juices indicated that 60% of tasters found the juices as acceptable or better than commercial fruit nectars at present on the market. (7) Taste panels showed a preference for natural melon juices over the lactic fermented juices. (8) The peroxidase activity of cantaloupe melon juice was higher than that of watermelon juice, with juice extracted from the core of the fruit showing a higher activity than that from other portions of the tissue. (9) Two types of peroxidase, of differing heat stability were detected in both juices. The more heat stable peroxidase had a decimal reduction time of 40 minutes at $80^{\circ}C$ and a z value of $11^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, PEG-PLA(or PLGA) amphiphilic di-block copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of D,L-lactide(or glycolide) and applied to polymeric micelle system for solubilization of a rosiglitazone as diabetes drug. The drug could be efficiently loaded into the polymer micelle by solid dispersion technique, and the drug-loaded micelles were characterized and evaluated as a drug delivery carrier by fluorescence spectrometer, DSC, and DLS measurements. The colloidal stability of drug loaded micelles in aqueous media could be enhanced by addition of 2-hydroxy-N-picolylnitinamide as a hydrotropic agent. The polymer micelles also showed biocompatible and nontoxic properties in vitro cell viability using MTT assay, and the drug loaded micelles were observed to be more effective than free drug for decreasing glucose in blood of rats.

  • The various functional groups, such as hydroxyl(-OH), carboxyl(-COOH) and quinonic oxygen(OC<) on the carbon black(abbreviated to CB) surface were activated with n-butyl lithium solution in n-hexane and then acrylate and methacrylate monomers were graft polymerized onto these activated anionic sites and CB-grafted polymers were obtained. To separate homopolymers from reaction mixture, non-solvent precipitation method or centrifugal separating method were applied. Subsequently, conversion, grafting ratio and efficiency were determined at various reaction temperatures and times. In case of acrylates, the grafting ratio showed 20~30% but methacrylates showed 150~200%. Also the anion polymerizations between CB and monomers were nearly reached to equilibrium state within one or two hours under each reaction temperatures but conversion and grafting ratio were increased a little with reaction temperature increase. In colloidal dispersion stability test, before heat-drying, the all CB-grafted polymers showed good dispersed stability in good solvents for acrylic and methacrylic homopolymers. Futhermore, CB-polymethacrylates were found to show excellent collidal properties for good solvents of methacrylic homopolymer even after heat-drying. Identification of the grafted polyacrylates and polymethacrylates onto the CB surface was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy. In addition, electric resistance values of CB-grafted polymers were measured by Four-probe method, and the increase of the grafting ratio showed the increase of the surface resistance.

  • Colloidal silica is used in various industrial products such as chemical mechanical polishing slurry for planarization of silicon and sapphire wafer, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings, binder of investment casting, etc. An accurate determination of particle size and dispersion stability of silica sol is demanded because it has a strong influence on surface of wafer, film of coatings or bulks having mechanical, chemical and optical properties. The study herein is discussed on the effect of measurement results of average particle size, sol viscosity and electrophoretic mobility of particle according to the volume fraction of eight types of silica sol with different size and surface properties of silica particles which are presented by the manufacturer. The measured particle size and the mobility of these sol were changed by volume fraction or particle size due to highly active surface of silica particle and change of concentration of counter ion by dilution of silica sol. While in case the measured sizes of small particles less than 60 nm are increased with increasing volume fraction, the measured sizes of larger particles than 60 nm are slightly decreased. The mobility of small particle such as 12 nm are decreased with increase of viscosity. However, the mobility of 100 nm particles under 0.048 volume fraction are increased with increasing volume fraction and then decreased over higher volume fraction.
