  • We present the near-infrared spectra (2.5-5.0 um) of shocked $H_2$ gas, observed with the Infrared Camera onboard the satellite AKARI. Two supernova remnants, IC 443 and HB 21, were observed. IC 443 shows a hint of non-equilibrium ortho-to-para ratio (OPR): 2.4 (-0.2, +0.3). HB 21 also shows an indication of a potential non-equilibrium OPR: 1.8-2.0. These non-equilibrium OPRs are first reported for shocked $H_2$ gas at E(v,J) > 7000 K, as far as we are aware. We concluded that the non-equilibrium OPR probably originates from dissociative J-shocks, considering several factors such as the shock combination requirement, the line ratios, and the possibility that $H_2$ gas can form on grains with a non-equilibrium OPR. The difference in the collision energy of H atoms on grain surfaces would give rise to the observed difference between the OPRs of IC 443 and HB 21, if dissociative J-shocks are responsible for the $H_2$ emission. Our study suggests that shocked-then-cooled $H_2$ gas may play as a heat reservoir with the non-equilibrium OPR.

  • Underwater robots are generally used for the construction of seabed structures, deep-sea ecosystem research, ocean energy development, etc. A ducted marine propulsor is widely used for the thruster of an underwater robot because of its collision protection, efficiency increase, cavitation reduction, etc. However, the flow of a ducted propeller is very complex because it involves strong flow interactions between the blade impeller and duct. The present work aimed to design a ducted propeller using 2-D strip theory and CFD analysis. The hydrodynamic forces (i.e. and ) were computed to set the local angle of attack in a spanwise direction of the propeller blade. After the propeller design, performance coefficients such as the thrust, torque, and efficiency were computed to check whether the designed performance was achieved. To validate the present analysis, the thrust was compared with experimental data and good agreement was obtained.

  • An accurate cross sections set are necessary for the quantitatively understanding and modeling of plasma phenomena. By using the electron swarm method, we determine an accurate electron cross sections set for objective atoms or molecule at low electron energy range. In previous paper, we calculated the electron transport coefficients in pure CF$_4$ molecular gas by using two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation. And by using this simulation method, we confirmed erroneous calculated results of transport coefficients for CF$_4$ molecule treated in this paper having 'C2v symmetry'as C$_3$H$_{8}$ and C$_3$F$_{8}$ which have large vibrational excitation cross sections which may exceed elastic momentum transfer cross section. Therefore, in this paper, we calculated the electron transport coefficients(W and ND$_{L}$) in pure CF$_4$ gas by using multi-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation by Robson and Ness which was developed at James-Cook university, and discussed an application and/or validity of the calculation method by comparing the calculated results by two-term and multi-term approximation code.e.

  • Collision cell technology-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (CCT-ICP-MS) was used to measure the concentrations of approximately 19 elements associated with airborne PM2.5 samples that were collected from a roadside sampling station in Daejeon, Korea. Standard reference material (SRM 2783, air particulate on filter media) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology was used for the quality assurance of CCT-ICP-MS. The elemental concentrations were compared statistically with the certified (or recommended) values. The patterns of distribution were clearly distinguished between elements with their concentrations ranging over four orders of magnitude. If compared in terms of enrichment factors, it was found that toxic trace elements (e.g., Sb, Se, Cd, As, Zn, Pb, and Cu) of anthropogenic origin are much more enriched in PM2.5 samples of the study site. To the contrary, the results of the correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit more enhanced correlations with the elements (e.g., Fe, K, Si, and Ti) arising from earth's crust. The findings of strong correlations between PM2.5 and the elements of crustal origin may be directly comparable with the dominant role of those species by constituting a major fraction of even PM2.5 as well as PM10 at the roadside area.

  • In the low altitude, mission of the aircraft is restricted by a variety of threats such as anti-air missiles and terrain obstacles. Especially, aircraft have always a risk of ground collision near terrain. In this study, to effectively solve this problem, we developed the flight path generation algorithm that is considered the terrain avoidance. In this flight path generation algorithm, waypoints that should be passed by the UAV are selected first. The waypoints are located in the middle of the terrain obstacles. Then, physically meaningful waypoints sets are classified by Dijkstra algorithm. The optimal waypoint guidance law based on the optimal control theory is applied to produce trajectory candidates. And finally the minimum control energy trajectory is determined.

  • Sputtering requires a way to bombard the target with sufficient momentum. Positive ions are the most convenient source since their energy and momentum can be controlled by applying a potential to the target. Although many types of discharges have been used for sputtering, magnetrons are now the most widely used because of the high ion current densities. Namely, plasma near the target electrode is confined by magnetic field using permanent magnet, so that the collision probability is increased. It is important to develop RF magnetron sputtering system which has many excellent merits compared with conventional methods. Our study aims to develop 1 kW RF source(13.56 MHz, TR type) and to accumulate the design and construction technology of RF magnetron sputter-deposition system. We developed 1 kW RF sputtering system to deposit thin film. These films are deposited by this RF source matched by auto-matching system using primarily argon gas. Target of Au, Ni, Al, and $SiO_2$ was well deposited on the argon pressure of 5-10 mTorr.

  • An accurate cross sections set is necessary for the quantitatively understanding and modeling of plasma phenomena. By using the electron swarm method, we determine an accurate electron cross sections set for objective atoms or molecule at low electron energy range. It is general calculation that used in this method to an two-term approximation of Boltzmann equation. But it may give erroneous transport coefficients for CF$_4$ molecule treated in this paper having \`C2v symmetry\`, therefore, multi-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation analysis which can consider anisotropic scattering exactly is carried out. It is necessary to require understanding of the fundamental principle of analysis method. Therefore, in this paper, we compared the electron transport coefficients(W and ND$\_$L/) in pure Ar, O$_2$, and CF$_4$ gas calculated by using two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation analysis code uses the algorithm proposed by Tagashira et al. with those by multi-term approximation by Rubson and Ness which was developed at James-Cook university, and discussed an application and/or validity of the calculation method by comparing these calculated results.

  • It has been well known that weak axial magnetic field on the process plasma enhances plasma density. As the magnetic field helps a specific polarized EM wave mode to penetrate into the plasma, the energy transfer to the plasma enhances and the ion density increases. We have analyzed systematic change of the dispersion relation caused by the cyclotron resonance condition. This resonance occurs at near 5 gauss to provide minimum penetration depth, as known before. RF penetration depth increases abruptly beyond the magnetic field of 5 gauss, and this phenomena lessen as the collision frequency increases.

  • The mass spectrometry (MS) provides the mass-to-charge ratios of atoms, molecules, stable/metastable complexes, and their fragments. I have taken a long journey with MS to address outstanding issues and problems by experiments and theory and gain insights into underlying principles in chemistry. By looking through the mass-to-charge ratio, I have studied thermochemical problems in silicon chemistry, the infrared multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy of organometallic intermediates, unimolecular dissociations of halotoluene radical cations, and the kinetics of association/dissociation of alkali halide triple ions with Lewis bases. Various MS platforms have been used to characterize non-covalent interactions between porphyrins and fullerenes and those between the group IIB ions and trioctylchalcogenides, and to examine the binding of the group IA, IIA and porphyrin ions to G-quadruplex DNA. Recently, I have focused on mass-balanced H/D isotope dipeptide tags for MS-based quantitative proteomics, a simple chemical modification method for MS-based lipase assay, and the kinetics and dynamics of energy-variable collision-induced dissociation of chemically modified peptides. Now, I see an important role of MS in global issues in the post-COVID era, as the society demands high standards for indoor air quality to contain the airborne-pathogen transmission as well as in-situ monitoring and tracking of carbon emissions to reduce global warming.
