The purpose of this study was to approve the effects of nursing simulation-based education on problem solving process and self-efficacy for nursing students. The nursing students of 244 participated the nursing simulation-based education of 60 hours. The questionnaire survey on problem solving process and self-efficacy were conducted 2 time(before education, after education) to the nursing students. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. The results were as follows; There was a statistically significant increase in problem solving process(t=2.637, p=.012) but no statistically significants self-efficacy(t=0.135, p=.743) effects of nursing simulation-based training in nursing college students. There was a significant positive correlation between problem solving process and self-efficacy(r=0.737, p=.017). In conclusion, the study found that nursing simulation-based education for nursing students may increase problem solving process but no effective self-efficacy.
This study aims to identify the characteristics of gas phase problem solving of college freshmen. Four students were participated in this study and solved the problem by using think-aloud method. The thinking processes were recorded and transferred into protocols. Problem solving stage, the ratio spended in each solving stage, solving strategy, misconceptions, and errors were identified and discussed. The relationships between students' belief system about chemistry problem solving and problem solving characteristics were also investigated. The results were as follows: 1. Students felt that chemical equation problem was easier than word problem or pictorial problem. 2. When students had declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge required by given problem, their confidence level and formula selection were not changed by redundunt information in the problem. 3. When the problem seemed to be difficult, students tended to use the Means-End or Random strategy. 4. In complicated problems, students spent longer time for problem apprehension and planning. In familiar problems, students spent rather short time for planning. 5. Students spent more time for overall problem solving process in case of using Means-End or Random strategy than using Knowledge-Development strategy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the change of critical thinking disposition and problem solving process in students who experienced problem-based learning. Method: This research design was one group pre-post test design. Twenty-five nursing students who participated in ‘'Nursing Process' course with two PBL packages for a semester in 2004 were the subjects of this study. The data were analyzed by repeated measures of ANOVA, and content analysis. Result: The problem defining in problem solving process was improved significantly, but there was no significant difference in the critical thinking disposition. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that PBL has a positive effect on nursing students' problem solving process, But for a more significant effect on a continuous base for critical thinking of nursing students, faculties should use web based and simulation-based education for self directed learning along with clinical situation-based scenarios.
This study aims to identify the differences in chemical problem solving process of college students when the amount of information, problem context and the reasoning level were varied. Four students were participated and each student solved the problem by think-aloud method and then interviewed individually. Problem solving stage, ratio of time for each solving stage, solving strategy, misconceptions, and errors were identified and discussed related to the characteristics of problems. And, the relationships of students' belief system about chemistry & chemistry problem solving and problem solving characteristics were also identified.
The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge types which the elementary science gifted students would use when solving a science problem, and to examine characteristics and types that were shown in the science problem solving process. For this study, 39 fifth graders and 38 sixth graders from Institute of Education for the Gifted Science Class were sampled in one National University of Education. The results of this study were as follows. First, for science problem solving, the elementary science gifted students used procedural knowledge and declarative knowledge at the same time, and procedural knowledge was more frequently used than declarative knowledge. Second, as for the characteristics in the understanding step of solving science problems, students tend to exactly figure out questions' given conditions and what to seek. In planning and solving stage, most of them used 3~4 different problem solving methods and strategies for solving. In evaluating stage, they mostly re-examined problem solving process for once or twice. Also, they did not correct the answer and had high confidence in their answers. Third, good solvers had used more complete or partially applied procedural knowledge and proper declarative knowledge than poor solvers. In the problem solving process, good solvers had more accurate problem-understanding and successful problem solving strategies. From characteristics shown in the good solvers' problem solving process, it is confirmed that the education program for science gifted students needs both studying on process of acquiring declarative knowledge and studying procedural knowledge for interpreting new situation, solving problem and deducting. In addition, in problem-understanding stage, it is required to develop divided and gradual programs for interpreting and symbolizing the problem, and for increasing the understanding.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors which influence the process of problem solving in nursing students during clinical practice. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 511 nursing students in from April 10 to June 10, 2011. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression procedures. Result: The values regarding self-leadership (mean 3.62), self-directed learning readiness (mean 3.53) and problem solving process (mean 3.37) were higher than the median. There were significant correlations between all the predictive variables and the process of problem solving. The greatest factors influencing the process of problem solving in nursing students were self-leadership and self-directed learning readiness (54.3%). Conclusion: By using the results of this study as a foundation, nursing education curriculum should be comprised of self-leadership and self-directed learning readiness for improvement of nursing students' problem solving process.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship among ego resilience, the problem solving process and clinical competency in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 265 nursing students in D city. Measures were ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. Data was analyzed using frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, person's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 version. Result: The Ego resilience score of subjects was 2.80 out of a perfect score of 4, the problem solving process score of subjects was 3.12, and the clinical competency score of subjects was 3.49 out of a perfect score of 5. There was a significant positive correlation among ego resilience, problem solving process and clinical competency. The significant predictors of problem solving process and clinical competency were ego resilience. Conclusion: These findings indicate that there is a need to increase ego resilience to improve the problem solving process and clinical competency of nursing students. The results should be reflected in the development of effective curricula.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the influence of knowledge, problem-solving processes, and self-efficacy on the clinical competency of nursing students in the home health nursing management of diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: The subjects of this study were 136 nursing students. Data were collected from April 18 to April 29, 2022, and analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program. Results: The total mean scores of nursing students' knowledge, problem-solving process, self-efficacy, and clinical competency in DM home health nursing management were 71.24, 3.92, 7.47, and 4.09, respectively. Clinical competency was significantly and positively correlated with the problem-solving process (r=.60, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=.48, p<.001) but not with knowledge (r=.09, p=.311). The problem-solving process was also positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.41, p<.001). Regression analysis revealed a 41.4% variance in the nursing student's clinical competency with problem-solving process (β=.47, p<.001) and self-efficacy (β=.28, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study provide valuable evidence for the development of educational interventions aimed at enhancing the clinical competency of nursing students in relation to home-visit healthcare services for DM management.

This qualitative study aimed to investigate ways to improve effective cooperative learning from students' perspective by understanding and analyzing the learning experiences of nursing students who participated in a collaborative problem-solving learning model. Data were collected through focus group interviews and reflection journals of six second-year nursing students from G-university in J-city who participated in a collaborative problem-solving learning model course. The interview data were analyzed and divided into 3 categories and 10 subcategories according to the six-step thematic analysis method proposed by Braun and Clarke. The results of analyzing the interviews were considered based on three areas: preparation before learning, the process of collaborating as a cooperative learning experience, and solutions and expectations after learning. The participants felt frustrated because collaborative problem-solving took more time for individual learning than traditional methods did and would not allow them to check the correct answers immediately. However, they gained new experiences by solving problems and engaging in discussions within their learning community. The participants' expectations included material that could help their learning, measures to prevent free-riders, and consideration of the learning process in evaluation factors. Although this study has sample limitations by targeting nursing students in only one region, it can be used to help operate collaborative problem-solving classes, as it reflects the real experiences and opinions of students.
Today, computational thinking takes an important role in problem solving in software education. As a result, software education as liberal arts for non-CS major students is rapidly expanding. It is necessary to study the effects of computational thinking on software problem solving ability compared to traditional programming language education. In this paper, we propose an evaluation model for analyzing the effects of computational thinking on the overall software development process, and analyze how the problem solving process is different for learners who take computing thinking classes and programming language courses as liberal arts courses. As a result, students who learned computational thinking showed higher ability in problem analysis and design process.
