In this study, the susceptibility of different symmetric steel buildings with dual frame system to Progressive Collapse (PC) was assessed. Some ten-story dual frame systems with different type of braced frames (concentrically and eccentrically braced frames) were considered. In addition, numbers and locations of braced bays were investigated (two and three braced bays in exterior frames) to quantitatively find out its effect on PC resistance. An Alternate Path Method (APM) with a linear static analysis was carried out based on General Services Administration (GSA 2003) guidelines. Maximum Demand Capacity Ratio (DCR) for the elements (beams and columns) with highest DCRs ($DCR_{moment}$ and $DCR_{shear}$) is given in tables. The results showed that the three braced bays with concentric braced frames especially X-braced and inverted V-braced frame systems had a lower susceptibility and greater resistance to PC. Also, the results represented that the beams were more critical than columns against PC after the removal of column.
The analysis of the progressive collapse resistance of structures is a well-known issue among structural engineers. Large-span reticulated dome structures are commonly utilized in large public buildings, necessitating research into their progressive collapse resistance to assure user safety. The most significant part of improving the structural resilience of reticulated domes is to evaluate their key elements. Based on a stiffness-based evaluation approach, this work offers a calculating procedure for element importance coefficient. For both original and damaged structures, evaluations are carried out using the global stiffness matrix and the determinant. The Kiewitt, Schwedler, and Sunflower reticulated domes are investigated to explore the distribution characteristic of element importance coefficients in the single-layer dome structures. Moreover, the influences of the load levels, load distributions, geometric parameters and topological features are also discussed. The results can be regarded as the initial concept design reference for single-layer reticulated domes.
Since pipes with wall-thinning defects can collapse at fluid pressure that are lower than expected, the collapse moment of wall-thinned pipes should be determined accurately for the safety of nuclear power plants. Wall-thinning defects, which are mostly found in pipe bends and elbows, are mainly caused by flow-accelerated corrosion. This lowers the failure pressure, load-carrying capacity, deformation ability, and fatigue resistance of pipe bends and elbows. This paper offers a support vector regression (SVR) model further enhanced with a fuzzy algorithm for calculation of the collapse moment and for evaluating the integrity of wall-thinned piping systems. The fuzzy support vector regression (FSVR) model is applied to numerical data obtained from finite element analyses of piping systems with wall-thinning defects. In this paper, three FSVR models are developed, respectively, for three data sets divided into extrados, intrados, and crown defects corresponding to three different defect locations. It is known that FSVR models are sufficiently accurate for an integrity evaluation of piping systems from laser or ultrasonic measurements of wall-thinning defects.

An analysis of the annual frequency of collapse(AF) is performed for each bridge pier exposed to ship collision. From this analysis, the impact lateral resistance can be determined for each pier. The bridge pier impact resistance is selected using a probability-based analysis procedure in which the predicted annual frequency of bridge collapse, AF, from the ship collision risk assessment is compared to an acceptance criterion. The analysis procedure is an iterative process in which a trial impact resistance is selected for a bridge component and a computed AF is compared to the acceptance criterion, and revisions to the analysis variables are made as necessary to achieve compliance. The distribution of the AF acceptance criterion among the exposed piers is generally based on the designer's judgment. In this study, the acceptance criterion is allocated to each pier using allocation weights based on the previous predictions. To determine the design impact lateral resistance of bridge components such pylon and pier, the numerical analysis is performed iteratively with the analysis variable of impact resistance ratio of pylon to pier. The design impact lateral resistance can vary greatly among the components of the same bridge, depending upon the waterway geometry, available water depth, bridge geometry, and vessel traffic characteristics. More researches on the allocation model of AF and the determination of impact resistance are required.
A dynamic electrical parameter monitoring device was designed to simultaneously record the instantaneous value of voltage, current, power, and resistance during spot welding. The data obtained using this technique have been analyzed in term of the relationships of these parameters to the phenomena occuring during the formation(surface break-down, nugget formation and mechanical collapse) of spot weld. Finally, a database implementation is undertaken to develop techniques for improving weld quality of the resistance spot welder.

By investigating a series of catastrophic tunnel fires, this research aims to evaluate the fire resistance design method as applied to tunnel structures in Korea. It is shown that the current strategy is oriented towards smoke control and ventilation to reduce the loss of life. As structural collapse is not regarded, a general guide is proposed to obtain the fire safety.

The progressive collapse resistance performance of a steel structure constructed using the moment frame with the WUF-B connection and the composite slabs was evaluated. GSA 2003 was adapted for the evaluation. Additionally the structural robustness and the sensitivity against the progressive collapse were analyzed. In the numerical analysis, a reduced model comprised of the beam and spring elements for WUF-B connection was adapted. The composite slab was modeled using the composite-shell element. Instead of the time-consuming dynamic analysis for the effect of the sudden column removal, the equivalent energy-based static analysis was effectively applied. The analysis results showed that the structure was the most vulnerable to in the case of the internal column removal, however it satisfied the chord rotation criterion of GSA 2003 due to the contribution of the composite slab which improved the stiffness of structure. In the robustness evaluation, the structural performance showed more than 2.5 times of the requirement according to GSA 2003, and the structural sensitivity analysis indicated the decrease of 33% of the initial structural performance.
The structural collapse of masonry structure under dynamic loading displays many possible failure mechanisms often related to interaction between structural components. Roof collapse is one of the major damage mechanisms observed in masonry structures during an earthquake. Better connection between the roof diaphragm and walls may be preventing roof collapse, but it can affect other failure mechanisms. In spite of this fact, less attention has been paid to the influence of the roof diaphragm effect on masonry structures and little research has been implemented in this field. In the present study, the roof diaphragm effect on the unreinforced masonry structure under dynamic loading has been experimentally investigated. Three one-quarter scale one-story adobe masonry house models with different roof conditions have been tested by subjecting them to sinusoid loading on a shaking table simulator. Phenomena such as failure pattern, dynamic performance of masonry structure were examined.

345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant Transmission Line Collapse Analysis and Countermeasures. The Typhoon Galmaegi which had been formed in July 15, 2008 diminished into a tropical cyclone and cooled the air above the West Sea. The cooled air colliding with the warm inland air caused a strong whirlwind at some places in the west seaside; the whirlwind battered the 345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant Transmission Line to be collapsed. The resistance of transmission towers against wind pressure, one of the key elements in transmission line engineering, is designed to endure the pressure corresponding to the maximum instantaneous wind speed. Before the above accident happened, no transmission line has ever been collapsed by a whirlwind. So this paper is aimed to analyze causes that collapsed 345kV Incheon Thermal Power Plant transmission line and to introduce countermeasures.
In this study, the vulnerability of two existing asymmetric steel building frames to Progressive Collapse (PC) is assessed. The buildings have different frame systems, steel sections and number of stories (nine and six). An alternate path method (APM) with a linear static analysis (LS) is carried out according to General Services Administration (GSA) 2003 guidelines. The Demand Capacity Ratio (DCR) of each primary element (beams and columns) is given with its specific details for all frames. The results show that the nine-story building with a dual frame system (moment frame with bracing system) has a lower susceptibility and greater resistance to PC than the six-story building with a simple building frame system (gravity system with bracing system). Implementing built-up box-shaped sections for columns is a better choice than using built-up I-shaped sections because there is no weak axis for the box section.
