Individual, Cooperative and Collaborative Works with Educational Games of Mathematics for Computers

  • We analyze the possibilities of using Information and Communication Technologies as a resource in the teaching/learning of Mathematics and we show the results of concrete experiments carried out with the games: "Adibu", "La ciudad perdida" and "Drood en el planeta siete", with fourteen students and two primary school teachers in a school in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain). Our analysis of the games is made within a global framework in which individual, cooperative and collaborative learning are considered, taking as reference the theoretical frameworks set out by Piaget, Vygotsky, and the principles of collaborative learning (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning).

  • Recommendation system is one way of implementing personalized service. The collaborative filtering is one of the major techniques that have been employed for recommendation systems. It has proven its effectiveness in the recommendation systems for such domain as motion picture or music. However, it has some limitations, i.e., sparsity and scalability. In this research, as one way of overcoming such limitations, we proposed the stepwise collaborative filtering method. To show the practicality of our proposed method, we designed and implemented a movie recommendation system which we shall call Step_CF, and its performance was evaluated using MovieLens data. The performance of Step_CF was better than that of Basic_CF that was implemented using the original collaborative filtering method.

Structured Group Interaction System for Collaborative Problem Solving (협업 방식의 문제 해결을 위한 그룹원 간의 구조적 대화 지원 시스템)

  • These days we come across many wicked problems whose solutions are beyond individuals intellectual ability. These problems can be resolved through collaborative group interaction. We developed an internet-based asynchronous group interaction support system, after looking into the collaborative problem solving process and the IBIS (Issue-Based Information System) argumentation model. It has the following characteristics ; 1) it is developed based on the modified IBIS model which is a model for group interaction to resolve wicked problems ; 2) it supports both processes of seeking and comparing solutions, while most similar systems do not have a feature to support the latter process ; 3) different structures can be defined dynamically according to the purpose of group interaction, so that it could be used for collaborative problem solving in a specific domain. To show the usability of the system, we carried out an experiment, whose result is shown at the end.

  • Practical methodology for categorizing collaborative disciplines or research in a quantitative manner is presented by developing a Correlation Matrix of Major Disciplines (CMMD) using bibliometric data collected between 2009 and 2014. First, 21 major disciplines in science and engineering are defined based on journal publication frequency. Second, major disciplines using a comparing discipline correlation matrix is created and correlation score using CMMD is calculated based on an analyzer function that is given to the matrix elements. Third, a correlation between the major disciplines and 14 research fields using CMMD is calculated for validation. Collaborative researches are classified into three groups by partially accepting the definition of pluri-discipline from peer review manual, European Science Foundation, inner-discipline, inter-discipline and cross-discipline. Applying simple categorization criteria identifies three groups of collaborative research and also those results can be visualized. Overall, the proposed methodology supports the categorization for each research field.

  • Recently the portion of international collaborative research in national R&D is being on the increase. But the management system of products from the international collaborative research is not sufficient. Not only the internal management system of public research institute, universities or government support R&D centers, are not enough, but also the legislations in government level are not established. In this paper, the problems and situations of product management system in international collaborative research are investigated and analyzed, and the methodology of improvement of them are presented.

  • Since software development team members have been more geographically spread due to the globalization of business and Internet technologies, the management of deliverables and communication efforts for developing high-quality software products on time is becoming more complicated. Among the functional requirements for collaborative software development management, the manipulation of shared information objects is essential for the collaborative work among distributed development team members. This paper proposes an integrated information object management framework comprised of a so-called BOC (Bill Of Class) scheme and a standardized software part dictionary for managing shared information objects efficiently among distributed co-workers. In order to manage these complex information objects, the proposed framework adopt product structures represented by Bills Of Materials (BOM) as stems for integrating the various information objects. Based on the proposed framework, a collaborative software development management system (CSDMS) is implemented, and the functionalities and the structure of the system are also described in this paper. The proposed system provides sufficient functionalities for the change management of information objects and the management of their relationship to other objects rather than existing system.

  • As social network services has become one of the most successful web-based business, recommendation in social network sites that assist people to choose various products and services is also widely adopted. Collaborative Filtering is one of the most widely adopted recommendation approaches, but recommendation technique that use explicit or implicit social network information from social networks has become proposed in recent research works. In this paper, we reviewed and compared research works about recommendation using social network analysis and collaborative filtering in social network sites. As the results of the analysis, we suggested the trends and implications for future research of recommendation in SNSs. It is expected that graph-based analysis on the semantic social network and systematic comparative analysis on the performances of social filtering and collaborative filtering are required.

  • With the recent trends of electronic commerce moving from B2C to B2B, Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) is widely adopted as a part of B2B in the virtual collaborative environment. This paper proposes an integrated CPC framework supporting collaborative works between businesses by sharing product data and collaborative process between global enterprises and their customers, who are related to product life cycle, and integrating application systems in order to realize a true B2B electronic commerce. To integrate into a loosely coupled structure, various web service technologies such as XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI are utilized as its fundamentals and on that basis, a CPC integration framework is implemented through the Internet to support real-time operation providing interoperability among all the different applications operated on various platforms which have been developed using different languages and adopted by different companies.

  • In this paper, we propose how to improve the lack of diversity in collaborative filtering, using tag scores contained in items rather than ratings of items. Collaborative filtering has excellent performance among recommendation system, but it is evaluated as lacking diversity. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a method for supplementing diversity lacking in collaborative filtering by using tags. By using tags that can be used universally without using the characteristics of specific articles in a recommendation system, The proposed method can be used.

  • This research studies the Virtual Reality simulation of Newton's physics law on rigid body type of objects for physics learning. With network support, collaborative interaction is enabled so that people from different places can interact with the same set of objects in Collaborative Virtual Environment. The taxonomy of the interaction in different levels of collaboration is described as: distinct objects and same object, in which there are same object - sequentially, same object - concurrently - same attribute, and same object - concurrently - distinct attributes. The case studies are the interaction of users in two cases: destroying and creating a set of arranged rigid bodies. We identify a specific type of application for contents authoring with modeling systems integrated with real-time physics and implemented in VR system. In our application called Virtual Dollhouse, users can observe physics law while constructing a dollhouse using existing building blocks, under gravity effects.
