  • There are various limiting factors that take part in the production of daughter plants, but the important thing for mother plants of strawberries is to undergo a sufficient period of dormancy during winter. It is a well known fact that many runners and daughter plants are generated from mother plants that have been through sufficient cold treatment, but such researches were not found in Korea. This experiment was conducted due to the recent need for a research on the effects of cold treatment using 'Seolhyang,' 'Maehyang' and 'Ssanta' cultivars bred in Korea for two years in 2012 and 2013. The strawberries were divided into 4 types treatments: cold treatment plants in which 1,000 hours have passed in the temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ and below; cold+heated treatment plants in which 1,000 hours have passed in the temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ and below, and then 2 weeks in the greenhouse; greenhouse treatment plants raised in the greenhouse; and plants in harvest treatment. The results of the 2012 experiment showed that 'Seolhyang' had the bigger number of daughter plants in the cold, cold+heated, and harvest than greenhouse. 'Maehyang' had the biggest number of daughter plants in the cold+heated, and lowest in the greenhouse and harvest. 'Ssanta' had no significant difference in all treatments. The results of the 2013 experiment showed that 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' both had more daughter plants in cold and cold+heated than in the greenhouse and harvest. 'Ssanta' tended to show a similar result and cold+heated had statistically more daughter plants than greenhouse.

  • The efforts which increase the strength of the auto-body structure and decrease its weight lead to develop a new concept of part production systems, such as Post-Form Strengthening by induction heat treatment. In this study, several cold and hot-rolled sheet steels were used to find out optimum induction heat treatment conditions. After induction heat treatment, strength of heat-treated sheet steels was increased significantly compared with that of as-rolled steels. From these results, auto-body structure which has more light and safe has been made by using this induction hardening method.

  • Composition and unsaturation ratio of fatty acids composing phospholipid which is the main constituent of biological membranes are known to be related to the response of plant to cold stress. In order to investigate a relationship between fatty acid unsaturation ratio of phospholipid and the range of cold tolerance of rice cultivars obtained in the field experiment, the lipid from the leaves of 32 rice cultivars were isolated and the fatty acid composition of phospholipid was determined by gas chromatography. In this experiment, composition and unsaturation ratio of fatty acids composing phopholipid on rice plants grown under natural condition and treated with chilling temperature were compared with the cold tolerance in the field for rice cultivars. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The phospholipids isolated from the leaves of 32 rice cultivars both grown under natural condition and chilling treatment contained palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acid as major components and palmitoleic, stearic and oleic acid as minor components. 2. The content of palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid, was reduced in rice seedlings subjected to chilling treatment for 3 days at $15^{\circ}C$, and contents of linoleic and linolenic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, were increased. 3. The unsaturation ratio of fatty acid was increased by chilling treatment, and was high in cold-tolerant cultivars but low in cold-susceptible cultivars and the results were correlated with the range of cold tolerance investigated in the field. 4. The content of palmitic acids among fatty acids composing phospholipid was reduced and that of linolenic acid was increased by hardening treatment. 5. The unsaturation ratio of fatty acid was increased 18~24% by hardening treatment compared to control.

  • 27 lines were selected for the cold resistant lines from the promising lines. The cold resistant lines were chiefly selected from Oro$\times$Norin 16, Oro$\times$Norin 20 and (Yudal$\times$Kongo)$\times$Yudal combination. The varieties of lately maturing showed cold resistantce. Transplanting treatment increased cold resistantce, and early sowing and drill planting also elevated cold resistance in the direct sowing culture. Plants to be cultured on soils with optimum moisture coutent showed higher cold resistance.

  • Objectives : This paper seeks to study the provenances of 10 Symptoms of Para-cold damage from Yixuerumen, and discovers the rationality and originality of para-cold damages recognized by Li Chan. Methods : The paper looks through the books referenced by Yixuerumen to investigate the source text for Yixuerumen's Para-cold Damage chapter, and the contents of the referenced books will be compared to that of Yixuerumen. Results : The sources of the 10 symptoms of para-cold damage from Yixuerumen Chapter of Cold Damage can be traced to Leizhenghuorenshu (expectoration, indigestion, rising temperature due to lack of energy, and beriberi), Wang Zhen's Shanghanzhengzhimingtiao Xinzengxuleishanghansizheng(the infection in a boil, blood sattis, caused overexertion, and pox), and Liu Chun's Yujiweiyi's chapter on Common Cold. Here, Li Chan made his own addition of internal damage and damage of overworking. Li Chan seems to have considered para-cold damage not as a type of cold damage but as a "concept relative to the broader range of cold damage." In reflection of this understanding, Li Chan limited the number of categories to ten in accordance with the developmental trace leading from Leizhenghuorenshu to Shanghanzhengzhimingtiao. When we understand para-cold damage as a "concept relative to the narrower range of cold damage," it could be used as a mean as for "Wenbin diagnosis," but Yixuerumen's para-cold damage is only utilized for the "diagnosis of a broader concept of cold damage." Conclusions : Li Chan deserves credits for his academic rationality and originality displayed by the method he used to form para-cold damages where he used real cold damage and para-cold damage as principles, by the division of para-cold damage symptoms into ten provenances, by the creation of the concept of para-cold damage, and by his broad collection of prescription and treatment corresponding to each type.

  • Tropical plant rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is the sole source of commercial natural rubber and low-temperature stress is the most important limiting factor for its cultivation. To characterize the gene expression profiles of H. brasiliensis under the cold stress and discover the key cold stress-induced genes. Three cDNA libraries, CT (control), LT2 (cold treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ for 2 h) and LT24 (cold treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24 h) were constructed for RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and gene expression profiling. Quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was conducted to validate the RNA-Seq and gene differentially expression results. A total of 1457 and 2328 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in LT2 and LT24 compared with CT were respectively detected. Most significantly enriched KEGG pathways included flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction, cutin, suberine and wax biosynthesis, Pentose and glucuronate interconversions, phenylalanine metabolism and starch and sucrose metabolism. A total of 239 transcription factors (TFs) were differentially expressed following 2 h or/and 24 h of cold treatment. Cold-response transcription factor families included ARR-B, B3, BES1, bHLH, C2H, CO-like, Dof, ERF, FAR1, G2-like, GRAS, GRF, HD-ZIP, HSF, LBD, MIKC-MADS, M-type MADS, MYB, MYB-related, NAC, RAV, SRS, TALE, TCP, Trihelix, WOX, WRKY, YABBY and ZF-HD. The genome-wide transcriptional response of rubber tree to the cold treatments were determined and a large number of DEGs were characterized including 239 transcription factors, providing important clues for further elucidation of the mechanisms of cold stress responses in rubber tree.

  • Sprague-Dawley male rats (150 g) were chronically treated with 5 v/v % ethanol admixed with nutritionally complete liquid diet and fed ad libitum for 3 weeks. One half of each group was exposed to cold stress at 4 ^{\circ}C either for 24 h (for determination of mRNA by in situ hybridization) or for 48 h (for determination of enzyme activity). Chronic ethanol treatment (ethanol) did not affect tyrosine hydroxylase(TH) mRNA level in locus coeruleus(LC) of brain and adrenal medulla(AM) compared to controls. Cold stress showed strong increase of TH mRNA level in LC and AM compared to controls. Pretreated ethanol reduced the increased TH mRNA level by cold stress in LC and AM. Ethanol did not affect TH activity in LC and adenal glands(adrenals). Cold stress increased TH activity in LC but not in adrenals. Pretreated ethanol did not reduce the increased TH activity by cold stress in LC but this result was not shown in adrenals. Phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase(PNMT) activity in $C_{1}$$C_{2}$ and adrenals increased only in ethanol treated group. THese results suggest that ethanol does not affect TH mRNA level and activity in LC and adrenals, but increases PNMT activity in $C_{1}$$C_{2}$ and adrenals in normal rat. It is also suggested that pretreated ethanol reduces the magnitude of cold stress response, that is induction of TH mRNA in LC and AM, and does not reduce the protein activation of TH that is also cold stress response in LC.

  • In the present study, the effect of cold reduction ratio on the spheroidization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ and $670^{\circ}C$ for 10 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure and coarse pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40 % and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical effects of Jujadanggui-hwan in the treatment of dysmenorrhea with cold hypersensitivity. Jujadanggui-hwan mentioned in Dongeuibogam has an effect on leucorrhea and cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet, lower abdomen and lumbus. Jujadanggui-hwan were prescribed to 24 dysmenorrhea patients with cold hypersensitivity of hands and feet or with leucorrhea three times a day for 13 weeks. After the treatment, numerical index for the pain was obviously reduced 'tot' point 2.12. It means that pain index as the patient can't do everyday occurrences reduce to 3 grad enough to do ordinary experience. So this study shows that Jujadanggui-hwan has remarkable effects on dysmenorrhea with cold hypersensitivity.

  • Plasma is 4th state of matters, which consists of electrons, neutral, and ionized particles. In biomedical research, cold plasma, which is generated in atmospheric condition, has been applied to disinfect microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast cells. Because of its low temperature condition, the heat-sensitive medical device can be easily sterilized by the cold plasma treatment. In recent years, the effects of plasma on mammalian cells have arisen as a new issue. Generally, plasma induces intensity dependent necrotic cell death. In this research, we investigate the feasibility of cold plasma treatment for cancer therapy by conducting comparative study of plasma effects on normal and cancer cells. We use THLE-2 (human liver normal cell) and SK-Hep1 (human liver metathetic cancer cell) as our target cells. The needle type of cold plasma is generated by the Helium plasma device. Two types of cells have different onset plasma conditions for the necrosis, which may be explained by difference in electrical properties of these two cell types.
