  • The separated three-phase flux-coupling type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the YBCO coated conductor. The primary and secondary coils in the transformer were wound in series each other through an iron core and the YBCO coated conductor was connected with secondary coil in parallel. In this paper, we investigated the current limiting characteristics through winding number of coil 2 and winding direction in the flux-coupling type SFCL. Through the analysis, it was shown that additive polarity condition and lower winding number of coil 2 have advantaged from the point of view of fault current limiting and burned of YBCO coated conductor.

  • In case of a difference exist between the experimental value and estimated value of back-emf, there can be a difference of turn number or residual flux density of permanent maget of the motor. In order to presume the turn number, the average length for each coil is used to calculate the resistance. However in producing the motor, doc to the tension of coil, the outer diameter of coil becomes smaller, and then the resistance estimated by average length for each coil is not correct. Therefore in this paper, through the comparison of experiment value and estimated value of inductance, a method of presuming the turn number and PM's residual flux density of an IPM motor is presented. The inductance of IPM motor changes with the rotor position, therefore the rotor part is taken out and then the inductance in open circuit condition is measured. In the analytical calculation, 3D FEM(Finite Element Method) is used, which can consider the leakage flux of end turns in frinzing effect.

  • A new electric coil design methodology using the notion of topology optimization is developed. The specific design problem in consideration is to find optimal coil configuration that maximizes the Lorentz force under given magnetic field. Topology optimization is usually formulated using the finite element method, but the novel feature of this method is that no such partial differential equation solver is employed during the whole optimization process. The proposed methodology allows the determination of not only coil shape but also the number of coil turns which is not possible to determine by any existing topology optimization concept and to perform single coil strand identification algorithm. The specific applications are made in the design of two-dimensional fine-pattern focusing coils of an optical pickup actuator. In this method, the concept of equivalent magnetizing current is utilized to calculate the Lorentz force, and the optimal coil configuration is obtained without any initial layout. The method is capable of generating the location and shape of turns of coil. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in optical pickup applications, design problems involving multipolar permanent magnets are considered.

  • Helical magneto-cumulative generators(MCGs) are devices which convert explosive energy into electromagnetic energy. The electromagnetic energy supplied from an external circuit is amplified by an explosively driven metal conductor mounted at the center of a helical coil compressing magnetic flux between the conductor and the coil. To optimize the coil design, output properties of small-size helical MCGs were measured while varying design parameters; the number of coil sections, length of the sections, pitch in the sections, and type of copper wire. Dimensions of the coil were kept constant, 50 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length. The coil was fabricated by using enamel-coated copper wire of 1 mm in diameter. The highest energy amplification ratio and figure of merit were 52.5 and 0.81, respectively. from an helical MCG with initial inductance of 63.7 $\mu$H at initial energy of 0.152 kJ Based on the experimental and calculated results, empirical formulas capable of optimizing coil designs were derived. By using these formulas, pitch in each coil section can be obtained at an arbitrary inductive load for high energy amplification ratio and figure of merit.

  • Like composite material. the coil winding pack of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) consist of multiphase element such as metallic jacket material for protecting superconducting cable, vacuum pressurized imprepregnated (VPI) insulation, and corner roving filler. For jacket material, four CS (Central Solenoid) Coils, $5^{th}$ PF (Poloidal Field) Coil, and TF (Toroidal Field Coil) use Incoloy 908 and $6-7^{th}$ PF coil, Cold worked 316LN. In order to analyze the global behavior of large coil support structure with coil winding pack, it is required to replace the winding pack to monolithic matter with the equivalent mechanical properties, i.e. Young's moduli, shear moduli due to constraint of total nodes number and element numbers. In this study, Equivalent Young's moduli, shear moduli, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated for all coil winding pack using Finite Element Method.

  • The characteristics of evaporation heat transfer for the utilization of LNG cold energy was investigated experimentally using liquified nitrogen and a solution of ethylene-glycol and water under horizontal two-phase conditions in the small-scale equipment of a cryogenic heat exchange system. The inner tubes in the double pipe heat exchanger with 8 mm and 15 mm inner diameter and 6 m length were adopted as a smooth test tubes and enhanced tubes by means of wire-coil inserts. Heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt number for the test tube were calculated from measurements of temperatures, flowrates and pressures. The correlations in a power-law relationship of the Nusselt number, the Reynolds number and Prandtl number for heat transfer were proposed which can be available for design of cryogenic heat exchangers. The correlations showed heat transfer coefficients for the wire-coil inserts were much higher than those for the smooth tubes, increased by more than 2.5 ${\~}$ 5.5 times depending upon the equivalent Reynolds number. Form and length of cryogenic double pipe heat exchanger were proposed for applicable to the utilization of LNG cold energy.

  • A liquid nitrogen-cooled prepolarization ($B_p$) coil made for ultra-low field nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging (ULF-MR) designed to generate 7 mT/A was fabricated. However, with suspected internal insulation failure, the coil was investigated in order to find out the source of the failure. This paper reports detailed build of the failed $B_p$ coil and a number of analysis methods utilized to figure out the source and the mode of failure. The analysis revealed that pyrolytic graphite sheet linings put on either sides of the coil for better thermal conduction acted as an electrical bridge between inner and outer layers of the coil to short out the coil whenever a moderately high voltage was applied across the coil. A simple model circuit simulation corroborated the analysis and further revealed that the failed insulation acted effectively as a damping resistor of $R_{d,eff}=6{\Omega}$ across the coil. This damping resistance produced a 50 ms-long voltage tail after the coil current was ramped down, making the coil not suitable for use in ULF-MR, which requires complete removal of magnetic field from $B_p$ coil within milliseconds.

  • Factors indicating culture status of two Spirulina platensis strains were monitored in a batch mode cultivation for 36 days. Changing mode in all factors showed a common turning point, indicating shift of cell or culture status. Mean biomass productivity was highly sustained until day 22, chlorophyll a concentration peaked on day 22, pH value was > 12 on day 22, coil number was abruptly shortened on day 22, and floating activity was sustained at greater than 79% after day 22, indicating that day 22 is a criterion reflecting phase-transfer in cell physiology in a batch culture system. Many of these changes may have been caused by increased pH, suggesting that pH control is essential for mass production of S. platensis. Fluctuations in floating activity were likely induced by the number of cellular gas vacuoles. Consequently, coil number per trichome and floating activity of S. platensis could readily act as simple indicators for determination of culture status or harvesting time of cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine how the different number of channels of coils were related in the perceived signal intensity under identical parameters and area. Dedicated knee phantoms were scanned consecutively using both of the 16-channel and 8-channel knee coils. The T1 weighted and T2 weighted sequences were acquired using both coils to compare the signal intensities according to the number of channels. As a result, the 16-channel knee coils outperformed the 8-channel knee coils and the signal intensity was significantly increased in both of the T1 and T2 weighted images with the 16-channel coil. In conclusion, it is considered that better signal intensities and more clinical utility can be provided, when coils with more number of channels are used rather than using the coils with smaller number of channels.
