  • This paper presents the numerical procedure for calculating non-uniform residual stresses based on relieved displacements obtained from incremental hole drilling. The relationship between the in-plane displacement produced by introducing a blind hole and the corresponding residual stress is established. Finite element calculations are described to evaluate the relieved coefficients required for the determination of non-uniform residual stresses. Validity of the proposed method has been tested through three axisymmetric test examples and two three-dimensional examples. As a result of . simulation on the test examples, it is found that this numerical procedure is well adopted to measuring non-uniform residual stress in the full hole depth range of the hole diameter from the surface. The accuracy of the hole drilling method with displacement measurement is discussed, comparing tile method with strain measurement

  • The elastic critical load of a slender compression member plays an important role when the proper design of that member is required. For tapered compression members, however, there are cases when the conventional neutral equilibrium or energy method can't be applied to the determination of critical loads. In this paper, the finite element method is applied to the approximate determination of the linearly tapered members. In this paper, the bars are assumed to be tapered linearly along their axes. The parameters considered in this study are taper parameter, α and the sectional property parameter, m. The member ends are either hinged or fixed. The computed results using the finite element method are represented in the forms of algebraic equations. The regression technique is employed to determine the coefficients of the algebraic equations. Critical loads estimated by the proposed algebraic equations coincide flirty well with those employing the finite element method.

  • Evaluating the risk of collision quantitatively plays a key role in developing the expert system of navigation and collision avoidance. This study analysed theoretically and thoroughly how to determine the gradient coefficients as described in the new evaluation of collision risk using sech function, and suggested the appropriate values as applicable.

  • In this paper a fast non-destructive analytical method to measure various nutrients in the intact tomato---Near infrared Spectrometry NIRs was introduced Using this method the content of some organic acid, vitamin C, reductive sugar, and solid soluble were determined simultaneously. Screen out four wavelengths at 916nm, 1000nm, 1004nm and 832nm to present optimum four optical terms of d$^2$ log(1/R) with second derivative spectra treating data scanned under these wavelengths. The multiple correlation coefficients between these values and those obtained on chemical analysis were 0.983, 0.990, 0.987, and 0.994, respectively, and the standard errors of prediction (SEP) were 0.007, 0.440, 0.037, and 0.057, respectively. These results indicate that NIRs is comparable to chemical methods in both accuracy and precision and is reliable method for determination of nutrients in intact tomato.

  • Determination of an aerodynamic structure is a very important problem in missile modeling. The structure problem is to choose an appropriate set of aerodynamic coefficients to represent chosen missile dynamics. A methodology and criteria to determine a structure from windtunnel data are presented in this paper. Aerodynamic coeffecients in the determined structure are then identified by parameter identification algorithms. The identified coefficients are in turn used to verify appropriateness of the structure. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the maximum likelihood mithod (ML) are adopted as the parameter identification algorithm. Both methods exhibit satisfactory results. While the model identified by the ML more closely follows dynamics of the chosen missile than that by the EKF.

  • Rare earth elements including Y and Th in the monazite were separated and determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The matrix effects among the rare earth elements were simultaneously corrected by means of empirical coefficient method. The values of the coefficients were quite dependent on the number of the standards. However, the different set of coefficients led to the same results. The analytical results corrected by the present method agreed with those by the inductively coupled plasma spectrometry.

  • MgO.$Al_2O_3$ polycrstalline spinel powder was subjected to vaporization over the temperature range of 1150-130$0^{\circ}C$ under H2 atmosphere. Diffusion coefficient of oxygen ion through the spinel were calculated using the measure vaporization rates as follows : D=28.4 exp(-901500/RT) Reference data of the vaporization rates of MgO.$8Al_2O_3$ single crystal spinel were applied to the vaporiza-tion model proposed in this study and were calculated to give the oxygen ion diffusion coefficients over the tempera-ture 1700-195$0^{\circ}C$. The obtained diffusion coefficients are as follows: $D=3.20{\times}106$ exp(-155600/RT)

  • The determination of unknown parameters in rotating machinery is a difficult task and optimization techniques represent an alternative technique for parameter identification. The Simulated Annealing(SA) and Genetic Algorithm(GA) are powerful global optimization algorithm. This paper proposes new hybrid algorithm which combined GA with SA and local search algorithm for the purpose of parameter identification. Numerical examples are also presented to verify the efficiency of proposed algorithm. And, this paper presents the general methodology based on hybrid algorithm to identify unknown bearing parameters of flexible rotors using measured unbalance responses. Numerical examples are used to ilustrate the methodology used, which is then validated experimentally.

  • We measured the electron transport coefficients, the electron drift velocity W and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient $D_{L}$ in the 0.526% and 5.05% $C_{3}F_{8}$-Ar mixtures over the E/N range from 0.01 Td to 100 Td by the double shutter drift tube, and compared the measured results by Hunter et al. with those. We determined the inelastic collision cross sections for the $C_{3}F_{8}$ molecule by the comparison of the present measurements and the calculation of electron transport coefficients in the $C_{3}F_{8}$-Ar mixtures by using a multi-term Boltzmann equation analysis.
