Experiments were performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of nonazeotropic mixture R-22+R-114 in a heat pump system. The ranges of parameter, such as heat flux, mass flow rate, and quality were $8,141{\sim}32,564W/m^2$, 24~58kg/h, and 0~1, respectively. The overall compositions of the mixtures were 50 and 100 per-cent of R-22 by weight for R-22+R-114 mixture. The results indicated that there were distinct different heat transfer phenomena between the pure substance and the mixture. In case of pure refrigerant the heat transfer rates for cooling were strongly dependent upon quality of the refrigerant. Overall evaporating heat transfer coefficients for the mixture were somewhat lower than pure R-22 values in the forced convective boiling region. For a given flow rate, the heat transfer coefficient at the circumferential tube wall(top, side, and bottom of the test tube) for R-22/R-114(50/50wt%)mixture, however, was higher than for pure R-22 at side and bottom of the tube. Furthermore, a prediction for the evaporating heat transfer coefficient of the mixtures was developed based on the method of Yoshida et.al.'s. The resulting correlation yielded a good agreement with the data for the refrigerant mixtures.
An experomental study on drg reduction in the rough tubes is presunted using the drrective drag reducing proymer solutions. The friction factors of the rough tubes follow the maximum drag reduction asymptote for the lower Reynolds numbers in the turbulent flow. However, as the Reynols number is increased the rougher tube results deviate from the maximum drag rduction asymptote sooner than the less rough tube results. There appears a systematic deviation from the maximum drag reduction asymptote depending on the relative roughness just as friction factors for the Newtonian hluid inthe rough tubes exhibit in the turbulent region. The minor loss results inthe various fittings such as elbows, tees, and gate valves are presunted The fittings show higher values of the loss coefficient in the drag reducing polymer solutions than in the Newtonian fluid, which is quite contrary to the drag reduction phenomenon in the straight tubes. The eqivalent length of the fittings for the drag reducing polymer solutions is many times longer than that for Newtonian fluids due to the increase of the loss coefficient and the decrease of the friction factor. It is speculated that the solid-like behavior of the polymer solutions in the abruptly changing folw passage plays a significant role in increasing the loss coefficient.
Premixed combustion within porous ceramic media is numerically studied to understand burning characteristics and to find best configurations for burner implementations. Among many parameters, critical to burner performance, flame location and extinction coefficient are selected as major parameters for this study. The flame structure and burner performance with respect to these two parameters are observed. In the study, it is found that the location of flame is the most important in porous burner operation since it affects the rate of heat transfer and flame structure. Stability of the flame within the porous ceramic burner is discussed with respect to the flame location. It is found that to obtain high radiative output, the flame should be located downstream section of the burner. But the flame is to be unstable at most of downstream section except near the exit plane. To overcome this problem, new porous ceramic burner, using different ceramic properties in one burner instead of single property ceramic, is made and tested. With a combination of ceramics of high extinction coefficient at upstream and another material of low extinction coefficient at downstream of the burner, the flame can be stabilized at wider region of the burner with higher radiative output compared to the original burner configuration.

This paper investigates the effects of Reynolds number (Re) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-deck bridge. A 1:36 scale sectional model of a twin girder bridge was tested using the Wall of Wind (WOW) open jet wind tunnel facility at Florida International University (FIU). Static tests were performed on the model, instrumented with pressure taps and load cells, at high wind speeds with Re ranging from $1.3{\times}10^6$ to $6.1{\times}10^6$ based on the section width. Results show that the section was almost insensitive to Re when pitched to negative angles of attack. However, mean and fluctuating pressure distributions changed noticeably for zero and positive wind angles of attack while testing at different Re regimes. The pressure results suggested that with the Re increase, a larger separation bubble formed on the bottom surface of the upstream girder accompanied with a narrower wake region. As a result, drag coefficient decreased mildly and negative lift coefficient increased. Flow modification due to the Re increase also helped in distributing forces more equally between the two girders. The bare deck section was found to be prone to vortex shedding with limited dependence on the Re. Based on the observations, vortex mitigation devices attached to the bottom surface were effective in inhibiting vortex shedding, particularly at lower Re regime.
This paper presents the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics during cooling process of carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube. The test section is a tube in tube type heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. It was made of a stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 7.75 [mm], the outer 2 diameter of 9.53 [mm] and length of 6000 [mm]. The refrigerant mass fluxes were $200{\sim}400$ [kg/$m^2s$] and the average pressure varied from 7.5 [MPa] to 10.0 [MPa]. The main results were summarized as follows The heat transfer coefficient of supercritical $CO_2$ increases in decrease of the gas cooler pressure. And the heat transfer coefficient increases with respect to the increase of the refrigerant mass flux. Among some correlations proposed in a transcritical region, Bringer-Smith's correlation has some analogy with experimental results. The pressure drop decreases in increase of the gas cooler pressure and increases with respect to increase the refrigerant mass flux.
In this paper, the electron transport characteristics in $CF_4$ has been analysed over the E/N range 1~300[Td] by a two-term approximation Boltzmann equation method and by a Monte Carlo simulation. The motion has been calculated to give swarm parameters for the electron drift velocity, longitudinal diffusion coefficient, the ratio of the diffusion coefficient to the mobility, electron ionization and attachment coefficients, effective ionization coefficient, mean energy, collision frequency and the electron energy distribution function. The electron energy distribution function has been analysed in $CF_4$ at E/N=5, 10, 100, 200 and 300[Td] for a case of the equilibrium region in the mean electron energy and respective set of electron collision cross sections. The results of Boltzmann equation and Monte Carlo simulation have been compared with experimental data by Y. Nakamura and M. Hayashi. The swarm parameter from the swarm study are expected to serve as a critical test of current theories of low energy electron scattering by atoms and molecules, in particular, as well as crucial information for quantitative simulations of weakly ionized plasmas.
An analysis is made to study the solute transport in a Casson fluid flow through an annulus in presence of oscillatory flow field and determine how this flow influence the solute dispersion along the annular region. Axial dispersion coefficient and the mean concentration expressions are calculated using the generalized dispersion model. Dispersion coefficient in oscillatory flow is found to be a function of frequency parameter, Schmidt number, and the pressure fluctuation component besides its dependency on yield stress of the fluid, annular gap and time in the case of steady flow. Due to the oscillatory nature of the flow, the dispersion coefficient changes cyclically and the amplitude and magnitude of the dispersion increases initially with time and reaches a non - transient state after a certain critical time. This critical value varies with frequency parameter and independent of the other parameters. It is found that the presence of inner cylinder and increase in the size of the inner cylinder inhibits the dispersion process. This model may be used in understanding the dispersion phenomenon in cardiovascular flows and in particular in catheterized arteries.
Two aspects of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) are investigated in order to improve its performance. The first one is on how to determine the model coefficient in conjunction with a dynamic subgrid-scale model, and the second one is on a wall-layer model(WLM) which allows one to skip near-wall regions to save a large number of grid points otherwise required. Especially, a WLM suitable for a separated flow is considered. Firstly, an averaging technique to calculate the model coefficient of dynamic subgrid-scale modeling(DSGSM) is introduced. The technique is based on the concept of local averaging, and useful to stabilize numerical solution in conjunction with LES of complex turbulent flows using DSGSM. It is relatively simple to implement, and takes very low overhead in CPU time. It is also able to detect the region of negative model coefficient where the "backscattering" of turbulence energy occurs. Secondly, a wall-layer model based on a local turbulence intensity is considered. It locally determines wall-shear stresses depending on the local flow situations including separation, and yields better predictions in separated regions than the conventional WLM. The two techniques are tested for a turbulent obstacle flow, and show the direction of further improvements.rovements.

The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.

The spatial scan statistic is a widely used method to detect spatial clusters. The method imposes a large number of scanning windows with pre-defined shapes and varying sizes on the entire study region. The likelihood ratio test statistic comparing inside versus outside each window is then calculated and the window with the maximum value of test statistic becomes the most likely cluster. The results of cluster detection respond sensitively to the shape and the maximum size of scanning windows. The shape of scanning window has been extensively studied; however, there has been relatively little attention on the maximum scanning window size (MSWS) or maximum reported cluster size (MRCS). The Gini coefficient has recently been proposed by Han et al. (International Journal of Health Geographics, 15, 27, 2016) as a powerful tool to determine the optimal value of MRCS for the Poisson-based spatial scan statistic. In this paper, we apply the Gini coefficient to normal-based spatial scan statistics. Through a simulation study, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method. We illustrate the method using a real data example of female colorectal cancer incidence rates in South Korea for the year 2009.
