  • The Purpose of this study is to improve construction quality with area calculation methods from BIM design technology. BIM has been supporting public-private-organizations and academic circles as a solution technology to manage and produce informations effectively from construction field including facility manage one. BIM standards are necessary but not sufficient for achieving perfect practical application in South Korea. In particular, development of architectural rule based area calculation methods is very urgent and important to improve construction quality. To solve those problems, methods and standards on area calculation are developed and its effectiveness of the proposed BIM-based methods is defined through the analysis between the existed area calculation method and process which are 2D based. This study will not only improve economic efficiency and accuracy of the construction quality but also settle the BIM environment in the domestic architecture.

  • Poorly designed reinforced concrete (RC) columns of actual moment-resisting frame (MRF) buildings can undergo Axial Compression Ratios (ACR) so high as their demand exceeds their capacity, even for serviceability gravity load combinations, this lack commonly leads to insufficient seismic strength. Nonetheless, many seismic design codes do not specify limits for ACR. The main contribution of this research is to investigate the need to limit the ACR in seismic design. For this purpose, three prototype 6 and 11-story RC MRF buildings are analyzed in this paper, these buildings have columns undergoing excessive ACR, according to the limits prescribed by standards. To better that situation, three types of alterations are performed: retrofitting the abovementioned overloaded columns by steel jacketing, increasing the concrete strength, and reducing the number of stories. Several finite element analyses are conducted using the well-known software SAP2000 and the results are used for further calculations. Code-type and pushover analyses are performed on the original and retrofitted buildings, the suitability of the other modified buildings is checked by code-type analyses only. The obtained results suggest that ACR is a rather reliable indicator of the final building strength, hence, apparently, limiting the ACR in the standards (for early stages of design) might avoid unnecessary verifications.

  • Confinement is known to have important influence on ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) members and it may therefore be anticipated that this parameter would also affect notably the moment redistribution in these members. The correctness of this "common-sense knowledge" is examined in the present study. A numerical test is performed on two-span continuous reinforced HSC beams with and without confinement using an experimentally validated nonlinear model. The results show that the effect of confinement on moment redistribution is totally different from that on flexural ductility. The moment redistribution at ultimate limit state is found to be almost independent of the confinement, provided that both the negative and positive plastic hinges have formed at failure. The numerical findings are consistent with tests performed on prototype HSC beams. Several design codes are evaluated. It is demonstrated that the code equations by Eurocode 2 (EC2), British Standards Institution (BSI) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) can well reflect the effect of confinement on moment redistribution in reinforced HSC beams but the American Concrete Institute (ACI) code cannot.

  • Objectives: This study analyzed the prescription characteristics of medication for acute respiratory diseases before and after pay-for-performance to provide basic data on effective medical quality management policies. Methods: The research data were collected from the 2013-2014 sample cohort of the National Health Insurance Corporation, from Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology, Family Medicine and General practitioner clinics (classification of disease codes: J00-J06, J20-J22, J40 outpatients). Results: The antibiotics prescription rates decreased from 43.9% in 2013 to 43.5% in 2014 when the major diagnosis was for upper respiratory infections and increased from 62.0% in 2013 to 62.5% in 2014 when the major diagnosis was for lower respiratory infections. Conclusions: There is a need to identify the correct antibiotic prescription method by expanding the current assessment standards. Such standards must include acute lower respiratory infections and minor diagnoses as the current evaluation techniques focus only on the major diagnosis of acute upper respiratory infections.

  • Gas cylinder cabinets have risks such as cylinder explosion and scattering of debris when a fire occurs. These risks are likely to cause gas spills and cause secondary damage. In order to reduce damage, it is very important to secure the fire resistance performance of the gas cylinder cabinet. In foreign countries, NFPA codes in the United States and EN-14470-2 in Europe stipulate fire resistance test standards for gas cylinder cabinets to protect internal cylinders for a certain period of time in a situation where gas cylinder cabinets are exposed to flames. However, in Korea, only internal pressure performance and airtight performance standards are specified, and the target is limited to piping, and research and regulations for the fire resistance performance of gas cylinder cabinets are insufficient compared to overseas. Therefore, in this study, finite element analysis was used to establish fire resistance standards for domestic gas cylinder cabinets. In the event of a fire, optimal conditions are derived in terms of structure and material.

  • Purpose: In Korea, buildings make up 20.5% (2012) of the gross national energy consumption, so they are a major target for greenhouse gas reduction. In particular, energy consumption in multihousing represents approximately 32.6% of the entire building sector. With improving energy performance being the focus, efforts are continuously being made to reinforce standards and systems in greenhouse gas reduction. This study investigated the current status of multihousing in Korea in terms of energy performance as described in the performance evaluation reports submitted (to an institution that specializes in reviewing the performance evaluation of green homes) based on the construction criteria and performance codes for green homes and examined if the evaluation criteria using related methodologies were appropriate. The results will provide helpful information for reviewing the future directions of operations and amendments to the systems. Method: The overall characteristics of the system were examined using the evaluation methodologies (and current state of revisions) of the performance codes for green homes and comparing them with similar systems. Also, the current state of application and energy performance (conducted according to the evaluation methodologies) were compared by the evaluation institution for multihousing neighborhoods that were assessed for five years from 2010 to 2014. Result: It has been confirmed that the performance codes for green homes are different from other similar systems in evaluating performances of multihousing in that they allow both quantitative and qualitative methods of evaluation, and they consider both energy and sustainability simultaneously in the evaluation. Furthermore, regarding the adoption rate of the forms for the two evaluation methods (Form 1 - quantitative and Form 2 - qualitative), the rate preferring Form 2 increased gradually in time to reach 55.3% in 2014. In analyzing the rate of overall energy reduction (submitted in Form 1) and the coefficient of thermal transmission for each part (submitted in Form 2), it was observed that the deviation between the performance submitted and the criteria decreased in line with the level of reinforcement.

  • This paper presents an automated visualization system, called StyleVisualizer, which checks the coding style of source codes and visualizes the coding style score using facial expression. Our system represents some kinds of facial expressions according to the evaluated score of the code style: A smile face means that the source code follows coding standards correctly. To measure the effectiveness of the StyleVisualizer, some experiments have been conducted on two class students in an applied computer course. In the experiments, we have compared the error ratio for obeying the coding standards when the StyleVisualizer was used or not. According to the experimental results, the error ratio with the StyleVisualizer was reduced above 30% than that without it. We expect that our system can encourage the students to obey the coding standards by providing the feedback of the visualized faces corresponding to their programs, resulting in high readable programs.

  • Technical design codes of slope stability for port structures were studied by comparing local Korean code with international codes; Japanese, EC and China codes. Three international design codes are based on limit state design method. Although Chinese code was based on the modified Fellenius method in slope stability analyses, it is currently changing to the simplified Bishop method. In Eurocode, the Morgenstern & Price method or the Bishop method is recommended. In Japanese code, however, the modified Fellenius method is preferentially recommended, but the simplified Bishop method could be alternatively used in case of thick sandy ground conditions. As for design parameter determination, Eurocode has stipulated comprehensive partial factors and partial material factors, however Japanese code has clarified empirical partial material factors for each port structure. Chinese code, the minimum ranges of the comprehensive partial factors are stipulated, and the use of the strength index by specific tests is concretely clarified with the safety condition. Case study of slope stability analyses showed the safety factors were higher in order of Chinese, Japanese and Eurocode, respectively.

  • It is general opinion that the future mobile multimedia networks will use different standards and a prospective solution to this problem will be software defined radio (SDR) techniques. SDR provides the flexibility to support multiple air interfaces and signal processing functions at the same time. Especially, digital signal processors and FPGAs are widely used for implementation of these adaptive and flexible functions of a baseband modem for SDR applications. Also, it is known that the modulation schemes of OCQPSK (Orthogonal Complex QPSK) and HPSK (Hybrid PSK) are used for IMT-2000 services of cdma2000 and WCDMA, respectively. Thus, in this paper, we design and implement an OCQPSK / HPSK modem using a DSP chip of Texas Instrument's TMS320C6701. One modulation scheme is operated by adaptive selection between the two schemes and 5 physical traffic channels differentiated by orthogonal codes are implemented in one DSP chip and each channel has 1Mbps data rates and 8Mcps chip rates.
