  • This study investigates the axial behavior of CFRP strengthened circular CFT columns and proposes the design formula of CFRP strengthened circular CFT columns. 10 specimens were prepared and axial loading test were conducted to investigate the retrofitting effects of CFRP composites on CFT columns. The main parameters are the number of FRP sheets and D/t ratio. Test results showed that the CFRP retrofitting enhanced the load bearing capacity of the circular CFT columns. Finally, A ACI 440 code applied ultimate axial strength formula is proposed to predict the ultimate strength of CFRP strengthened circular CFT columns. The proposed formula are good agreement with the test results.

  • This study focused on evaluating the reliability of code formulas such as those of the current Korean Building Code(KBC 1988). UBC 1997, NBCC 1995. and BSLJ 1994 for estimating the fundamental period of RC apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems, representative of typical residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, full-scale measurements were carried out on fifty RC apartment buildings, and these results were compared to those obtained by code formulas and also by dynamic analysis. Although these code formulas are based on the measured periods of buildings during various earthquakes and building period varies with the amplitude of structural deflection or strain level, ambient surveys should provide an effective tool for experimentally verifying the design period to the completed building. This comparison shows that comparatively large errors are likely to occure when the code formula of KBC 1988 is used, and all the other code formulas are not sufficient to estimate the fundamental period of apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems. An improved formula is proposed by regression analysis on the basis of the measured period data. The proposal is for the servicebility stress level, but it can also be applied for seismic code in the regions of low seismicity similar to Korea.

  • This paper presents a plan and guidelines that were drawn for Korean based research carried out on the fire-resistance of CFT columns. This research was carried out by reviewing the Korean regulations related to the fire-resistance of CFT columns and examining studies which had been made in Korea as well as overseas. The first phase of the study plan was to compare the fire-resistance of square CFT columns without fire protection (obtained through fire-resistance tests and numerical analyses) with estimated values (obtained through fire-resistance design formulas proposed in Korea and overseas). This comparison provided conclusions as outlined below. Fire-resistance tests conducted in this study proved that, when the actual design load is taken into consideration, square CFT columns without fire protection are able to resist a fire for more than one hour. A comparison was made of test and analysis results with the fire-resistance time based on the AIJ code, the AISC design formula and the estimation formula suggested for Korea. The results of this comparison showed that the test and analysis results for specimens SAH1, SAH2-1, SAH2-2 and SAH3 were almost identical with the AIJ code, the AISC design formula and estimation formula. For specimens SAH4 and SAH5, the estimation formula was more conservative than the AIJ code and the AISC design formula. It was necessary to identify the factors that have an influence on the fire-resistance of CFT columns without fire protection and to draw fire-resistance design formulas for these columns. To achieve this, it is proposed that numerical analyses and tests be conducted in order to evaluate the fire-resistance of circular CFT columns, the influence of eccentricity existing as an additional factor and the influence of the slenderness ratio of the columns. It is also suggested that the overall behavior of CFT structures without fire protection within a fire be evaluated through analysis simulation.

  • The errors take place in the communication channel but they are often burst-error types. From properties of the Fi-bonacci code, it is not difficult to detect the burst-errors accompanying with this code. Fibonacci codes for correcting the double-burst-error patterns are presented. Given the channel length with the double-burst-error type, Fibonacci code correcting these errors is constructed by a simple formula.

  • Computer simulations of the recording and reading of holograms in an 8-bit phase-code multiplexing system are presented. From the computer simulation each recording time of eight holograms is obtained such that the strength of restored holograms is same. An analytic formula to predict the recording times is derived by fitting the formula to the computer simulation data. It is found that our analytic formula can predict the hologram recording time not only in 8-bit system but also in 16-bit and 32-bit systems in an error less than $\pm$8.4%. Optical experiments are also performed in a 4-bit phase code-multiplexing system. It is found that the strength of the restored holograms is more uniform compared with conventional methods.

  • In this work, the helicopter price estimation formula from Harris & Scully is revised and updated for more accurate prediction of the current prices of helicopters which can be applied in the preliminary design stage. As many as 74 helicopter price and sizing data after the year 1997 are newly included to the out-dated coefficients in the cost estimation formula. In addition, the updated price estimation formula is added to Tishchenko's preliminary sizing method for price consideration in the preliminary design stage. Sikorsky's S-76C+ helicopter is used along with other various helicopters for comparison and validation of the sizing code as well as the new updated price estimation formula.

  • As pointed out in the OECD BEMUSE Program, when a high computation time is taken to obtain the relevant output values of a complex physical model (or code), the number of statistical samples that must be evaluated through it is a critical factor for the sampling-based uncertainty analysis. Two alternative methods have been utilized to avoid the problem associated with the size of these statistical samples: one is based on Wilks' formula, which is based on simple random sampling, and the other is based on the conventional nonlinear regression approach. While both approaches provide a useful means for drawing conclusions on the resultant uncertainty with a limited number of code runs, there are also some unique corresponding limitations. For example, a conclusion based on the Wilks' formula can be highly affected by the sampled values themselves, while the conventional regression approach requires an a priori estimate on the functional forms of a regression model. The main objective of this paper is to assess the feasibility of the ACE-RSM approach as a complementary method to the Wilks' formula and the conventional regression-based uncertainty analysis. This feasibility was assessed through a practical application of the ACE-RSM approach to the LOFT L2-5 LBLOCA PCT uncertainty analysis, which was implemented as a part of the OECD BEMUSE Phase III program.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the US code and European code on the evaluation of fuel economy of natural gas vehicles and deduce the formula suitable for domestic natural gas fuel. The fuel consumption formula have been derived by carbon balance relation between fuel composition and exhaust emission. The US code does not limit the composition of the test gas, but European code should be used the reference gases such as G20 and G23. In the case of NGV using domestic city gas, it is confirmed that the fuel economy determined by European code is 12% worse than that of US code because of difference of test gas. Also, a method of determining the fuel properties from the calorific value is proposed to evaluate the fuel economy of natural gas vehicles.

  • To ensure durability and light weight of bridges, high-strength concrete is required for long-span deck slabs. Such a technology eventually extends the life of bridges and improves the economic efficiency. The results of this study suggests a formula for calculating the minimum thickness of long-span deck slabs built with high strength concrete. The minimum thickness is proposed based on the limit states indicated in the CEB-FIP Model Code and the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code(limit state design). The design compressive strength of concrete used for the study is 80MPa. Moreover, the required thickness for satisfying the flexural capacity and limiting deflection is estimated considering the limit state load combination. The formula for minimum thickness of deck slabs is proposed considering the ultimate limit state(ULS) and the serviceability limit state(SLS) of bridges, and by comparing the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code and similar previous studies. According to the research finding, the minimum thickness of long-span deck slab is more influenced by deflection limit than flexural capacity.

  • In this paper, a decision-feedback coherent code tracking loop is designed for WCDMA systems and its performance is analyzed in terms of jitter variance considering the effect of phase and symbol estimation errors for both AWGN and fading environments. An analytical closed-form formula for jitter variance is Int derived for AWGN environments as a function of a pulse-shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth while involving the phase estimation error and bit error rate, and the upper bound of jitter variance is derived for fading environments. Finally a second-order coherent code tracking loop is designed with the DPCH frame format #13 of the WCDHA forward link selected as a target system, and its performance is evaluated by the closed-form formula and compared with the simulation results for both AWGN and Rayleigh fading environments.
