  • A novel ONNO-type tetradentate ligand, 1,3-diaminopropane-N,N'-di-α-(β-methyl)-pentanoic acid (H2apmp) and its cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes, [Co(apmp)X2]n+, (X=Cl-, NO2-, H2O, X2=CO32-, en, L-phenylalanine) have been synthesized. During the preparation of the dichloro cobalt(Ⅲ) complex of apmp, [Co(apmp)Cl2]-, the ligand has coordinated to the cobalt(Ⅲ) ion in a geometric selectivity to give only the uns-cis isomer and, during the substitution reaction between L-phenylalanine and [Co(apmp)Cl2]-, the L-phenylalanine has coordinated to the cobalt(Ⅲ) ion in a geometric selectivity to give only an uns-cis-meridional isomer. It is of interest that this is a rare case of the [Co(ONNO ligand)X2]n+-type complex preparations, which gives only an uns-cis isomer with geometric selectivity.

  • Arylalkyne cobalt complexes 5, 6 were prepared and irradiated with e-beam to study their fragmentation focused in alkyne formation. Thioaryl complex 6 showed facile CO ligand release and generated parent alkyne in 89% relative intensity. Meanwhile, hydroxyaryl complex 5 gave alkyne in 6% relative intensity.

  • In 10M chloride (4M HCl + 6M LiCl) solution, cobalt, but not nickel, formed complex anion (${CoCl_3}^-$), and this anion was extracted by a liquid anion exchanger with Amberlite LA-2. The ion exchange capacity was 2.175meq of cobalt complex per unit ml of Amberlite LA-2. Upon eluting the resin with 0.4M nitric acid, the cobalt complex was stripped and transfered into eluate quantitatively. By using this separation method in the chloride solution dissolved with 50mg of cobalt (II) and 500mg of nikel(II), recovery of cobalt were 99.6 percent.

  • Amino acid cobalt(Ⅲ) complexes of 1,3-diminopropane-N,N'-di-α-(β-methyl)-pentanoic acid (H2dpdmp), uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)(aa)] (aa=glycine, S-alanine, R-aspartic acid, sarcosine) have been prepared from the reaction between the uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)Cl2]- complex and the corresponding amino acid. In the reaction with the uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)Cl2]- complex, glycine and S-alanine have yielded both merridional and facial isomers, while R-aspartic acid and sarcosine, only merridional isomers. The stereospecific substitution reaction of R-aspartic acid to racemic uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)Cl2]- complex has yielded two merridional diastereomers; ΛR-uns-cis- and ΛR-uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)(R-asp)]. It is of interest to note that this is one of the few CoⅢ(ONNO)(aa) type complex preparations, which gives only one isomer with stereospecificity. On the other hand, two merridional products obtained from the reaction of sarcosine with racemic uns-cis-[Co(dpdmp)Cl2]- are turned out to be mixtures of optical isomers.

  • Surface modification of tridimensional cubic mesoporous silica, SBA-16, was investigated with pendant arm functionalized cobalt diaminosarcophagine (diAMsar) cage complex which covalently grafted onto the silica surface through the silication with sylanol group. The spectroscopic results showed that the mesoporous structure was preserved under the $[Co(diAMsar)]^{3+}$ grafting reaction condition. Successful grafting prevented the cobalt diAMsar cage from leaching out from the SBA-16 support.

  • Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of cobalt-Schiff (Co-SB) base complexes, Co(salen) [N-N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-ethylenediimino cobalt(II)] and Co(salophen) [N-N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-1,2-pheny-lenediimino cobalt(II)], have been c arried out to test them as oxygen reduction catalysts. Both compounds were found to form an adduct with oxygen and exhibit catalytic activities for oxygen reduction. Comparison of spec-tra obtained from electrooxidized complexes with those from Co-SB complexes equilibrated with oxygen in-dicates that the latter are consistent with the postulated complex formed with oxygen occupying the coaxial ligand position, namely, Co(III)-SB·O2 - .The catalysis of oxygen reduction is thus achieved by reducing Co(III) in the oxygen-Co-SB adduct, releasing the oxygen reduction product, e.g., O2 - ., from the Co(II)-SB complex.

  • Kinetic studies on the ligand substitution reactions of cyanocomplexes were performed in several micellar solutions. It showed the observed rate constants was found to be independent of the entering ligand concentration at high concentration of cyanopyridine and pyrazinecarboxylate. We could see also that in nonionic and anionic micellar solutions no influence of changes in the surfactant concentration on the observed rate constants was found. Taking into account the hydrophilic nature of the cobalt complex, the cobalt complex molecule was expected to be located in the aqueous phase of the micellar systems, where the reaction would take place. In cationic micellar solutions, a small increase in the observed rate constant was found when the cationic surfactant concentration increased. After reaching a maximum, the rate constant decreased on increasing surfactant concentration and subsequently it reached a plateau, where the observed rate constant was independent of changes in the surfactant concentration.

  • Oxidation of cycloalkenes with $O_2$ promoted by heterogeneous bis(acetylacetonato) cobalt (II) complex catalyst which can be recycled has been performed under mild conditions. It was found that $\beta$-ionone, cyclohexene, 1-methylcyclohexene, and $\alpha$-ionone were efficiently oxidized with $O_2$ in the presence of Co (II) complex and butyraldehyde at $55\;{^{\circ}C}$. A simple treatment of the resulting products led to epoxides as predominant products and a small amounts of allylic oxides, the chemoselectivity for the former being 82.1 - 90.8% with a 70.6 - 98.6% substrate conversion. On the other hand, oxidation of 1-phenylcyclohexene, 1-cyclohex-1-enylethan-1-one, $\alpha$-pinene, and $\beta$-pinene gave allylic oxides as major products.
