The Elaeagnus macrophylla is a stenoecious evergreen plant with nitrogen-fixing symbionts and its timing of fruit-ripening coincides with spring migration of many birds in southwestern Korea. To recognize bird species which eat fleshy fruits of the Elaeagnus macrophylla and to evaluate the effects of bird ingestion on seed germination and dispersal, we monitored birds and carried out germination experiments using its fruits and seeds from March to April 2007 at Hongdo Island, Jeonnam Province, Korea. As a result, eight species of birds including the Gray Starling (Sturnus cineraceus), the Brown-eared Bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) and the Dusky Thrush (Turdus naumanni) ingested the fruits. Germination rate was enhanced but length of seed dormancy was instead shortened in ingested (collected from the feces of birds) and manually extracted seeds (obtained directly from the fruits) than in intact fruits collected directly from the plant. Moreover, the possible scale of seed dispersal by the frugivorous birds ranged up to 6.9 ha based on home ranges of starlings. Consequently, the Elaeagnus macrophylla supplies food resources for migratory birds, and the birds give the plant opportunities of new colonization. We suggest that this kind of interaction between the nitrogen-fixing plant and avian seed dispersers is applicable as a process of natural restoration in degraded coastal evergreen forests.
This study was carried out to investigate geographic variation in needle characteristics of Pinus densiflora, one of the most economically important tree species in Korea. Needles were collected from 35 natural populations and their morphological and anatomical characteristics were studied. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations in needle length, needle width, number of stomata row, density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$, number of serrations in 0.5mm, and number of resin ducts. In all these traits, variance components among individuals within populations were larger than those among populations. The density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ increased as the latitudes and elevations of the populations increased, while the number of serrations in 0.5mm decreased as the decrease of latitudes and elevations. The number of resin ducts was higher in inland populations than in coastal populations. The resin duct index appeared to be higher in western populations than in eastern populations. Cluster analysis based on morphological characteristics divided populations into three groups. The third group was composed of populations selected from the Taebaek mountains. The number of serrations in 0.5mm of this group was lower than that of other two groups, while the density of stomata in $0.25mm^{2}$ was higher.
Morphological and geographical examinations as well as phylogenetic analyses using ITS sequences were performed for Asparagus L. in Korea. A total of five species of Asparagus were confirmed to be distributed in South Korea. The shape of cladophylls, length of pedicels, and shape of perianth were considered to be important characteristics for the identification of Koran Asparagus species. A monophyly of each species was evident in the ITS phylogenetic trees in which multiple accessions (5 to 24, depending on species) represented each of the five Korean species. A. rigidulus Nakai, once considered conspecific to A. schoberioides Kunth, formed a distinct lineage in the ITS trees. Pedicels of A. rigidulus, which is distributed mainly in coastal areas, were about two times longer than those of A. schoberioides occurring in inland areas, suggesting that they should be treated as distinct taxa.

Background: Juniperus chinensis L. populations are distributed locally on several areas including coastal cliffs which are difficult to access in the central eastern Korea. Wild populations inhabit relatively barren environments such as rocky areas and cliffs, which are very sensitive to even minor environmental disturbances including artificial interventions and natural disturbances, and thus demonstrate great fluctuations in the population size and density. This study aims to analyze the genetic diversity, differentiation, and genetic structure of each population in order to provide useful data required to establish a substantial conservation strategy of J. chinensis. Results: The genetic diversity of J. chinensis at the population level (P = 78.7%, h = 0.282, S.I. = 0.420) was somewhat higher compared with those measured in the same genus, Juniperus. The genetic differentiation degree among nine populations established naturally in central eastern Korea was 11.50% and that among sub-populations within the same area was 5.52%. On the other hand, genetic variation of individuals within the populations was 82.93%. But frequency of the main allele was different among loci. In particular, fixation of allele frequency and occurrence of rare allele in the highly isolated population suggest a likelihood that genetic drift would occur in populations of this plant. As the result of analysis on the genetic structure of nine populations, nearby populations and isolated populations tended to form separate clusters from each other as the hypothetical number of clusters (K) increase. Conclusions: This result implies that if the population size of J. chinensis is reduced due to environmental change and artificial and/or natural disturbances in the future, it could affect negatively on the genetic diversity of the plant species. In order to maintain and conserve genetic diversity of J. chinensis, ecological network, which can help genetic exchange among the local populations, should be prepared, and conservation strategies in situ as well as ex situ are also required with continuous monitoring.
The genus Suaeda is one of the most popular plants on salt marsh areas in Korean Peninsular. The entities that comprise taxa in Korea exhibit widely overlapping ranges in all morphological attributes. Ramdom amplified polimorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to clarify taxonomic delimitation among the Korean taxa of Suaeda and to analyse genetic variations among the populations of S. japoniro in western and southern coastal regions. Six decamer primers amplified a total of 65 scorable bands, of which 61 were polymorphic. In all primers investigated, S. glauro of sect. Schanginia is the most distinctive species, compared with others of sect. Heterosperma. S. japonica, S. maritima, and S. malacosperma, which have been hardly distinguished each other by external morphology, were readily recognized by its specific DNA bands. The characteristic RAPD markers were identified local populations of S. japonica, but this feature was not revealed within population.
The study was performed to understand the actual vegetation by using the phytosociological method on the Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior community group in Jeju Island. The flora was composed of 48 families, 156 genera, 200 species, 28 varieties, 2 forma or 230 taxa. The Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior community group vegetation was classified into two communities and one association; Erigeron annuus - Conyza sumatrensis, Bromus tectorum - Bidens pilosa, Setaria viridis - Eleusine indica community and Lactuco indicae - Humuletum japonicae association. Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior community group was wide from the coastal areas up to the elevation of 1500 meter on Young sil of Mt. Halla. The highest dominance of the Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior is 345 meter which is located near Seoneheul-ri Jocheon-eup, on the other hand the lowest one is located 1020 meter near Young-sil of Mt. Halla.
We studied primary production, nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in a salt marsh of Okryutung at Nakdong River estuary. The standing biomass in Phragmites longivalvis, Carex scabrifolia and Zoysia sinica stand was $5.48kg/\textrm{m}^2,{\;}1.94kg/\textrm{m}^2{\;}and{\;}1.95kg/\textrm{m}^2$, respectively. The peak above-ground biomass in each stand was $1.99kg/\textrm{m}^2,{\;}0.74kg/\textrm{m}^2{\;}and{\;}1.03kg/\textrm{m}^2$, respectively. Soil nitrogen decreased from the onset of growing seson till July, and then increased. Seasonal patterns of soil phosphorus were different from stand to stand. Nitrogen concentrations of above-ground plant tissus were quite different among the plant species at the very beginning of the growing season, however, they became similar as the plants grow. Seasonal pattern of phosphrous in C. scabrifolia roots was quite different from those other two species. Nitrogen absorbed by plants during season in P. longivalvis, C. scabrifolia and Z. sinicia stand was 224kg/ha, 111kg/ha, 156kg/ha, respectively. Phosphorus taken up by plants was 22kg/ha, 29kg/ha and 21kg/ha, respectively. Because the vascular plants growing at salt marshes can immobilize large quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus, salt marsh vegetation can be sued for preventing the pollution of coastal sea water.

When the offshore wind power plant is planned to construct, it is important for the wind farm site to figure out the distribution of the weak soil layers that might cause subsidence by the impact of the external moment from the wind plant's load and an oscillating wind load. Coring test is the optimistic method to figure out weak soil layers, but this method have some problem such as condition of the in-situ or economical limitation. In order to make up for the weak points in coring test, the researches using the geostatistics methods is actually done. In this study, setting a fixed coastal area that offshore wind plants construct firstly and Estimation of distribution on the thickness of the weak soil layer through the geostatistic method is conducted. The weak soil layer is sorted by result of the Standard penetration test, geostatistic method is used to ordinary kring and sequential gaussian simulation and compared to both method's result. As a results of study, we found that both methods show similar estimations of deep weak soil layer and we could evaluate quantitatively the uncertainty of the result.
This experiment was conducted to select the right artificil soil for the purpose of artificial cultivation by effect of NaCl and different artificial soil treatment on plant growth in Salicornia herbacea that live in coastal areas. The experimental plants were planted in light and easy-to-use artificial porous soil, vermiculite, perlite, and mixed soil and were cultured for 4 month treated by hyponex solution fertilizer and 200 mM NaCl. The height, fresh weight, and dry weight of plant growth was good in a mixed soil of porous soil and pearlite. NaCl treatment on growth and chlorophyll contents, regardless of soil type decreased. Proline content of control was showed higher than salt treatment in planted by poros soil and perlite and antioxidant activity was similar value in all treatment. The antioxidant of Salicornia in different soil and salt treatment was not affected.
Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentrations and primary productivities were measured and analyzed in the adjacent waters of Kori Nuclear Power Plant where thermal effluent is being discharged chlorophyll-a concentrations were ranged from 1.89 to 12.8 ug/l. Nanoplankton 9cell size; 3∼20 um) fractions of the total chlorophyll-a concentrations were ranged from 4.60 to 65.95% and picoplankton (cell size<3um) fractions contributed from 15.71 to 83.20%. Primary productivities measured by C 14 method were ranged from 165.17 to 645.79 mgC/m$^2$ /day and, nanoplankton and picoplankton contribution rate to the total primary productivity were ranged from 8.06 to 43.98% and from 19.64 to 81.45% respectively. these results imply that very tiny cell sized phytoplankton population are important in point of biomass and primary productivity of phytoplankton communities.
