In Sagye coast of Andeok-myeon, southwestern Jeju, shore platform of noncohesive Hamori Formation, marine terrace deposit of round gravels, coastal dune composed of shell sand and volcanic sand, and back lake are linked closely with each other. In this paper, the formation process of Sagye coastal geomorphic system analysed by using OSL dating method is as follows: Firstly, Hamori Formation is a horizontal stratum filed up of tuff reworked by submarine volcanic eruption during 3$\sim$7.6 ka BP. Hollow at the boundary between Hamori Formation' flat and Kwangheak Basalt's gentle slope become a back lake when block is appeared over the sea level by uplift. Secondly, while Hamori Formation was laid below sea level, gravels which had been broken and abraded at southwestern rocky coast composed of Kwangheak basalt or been transported through the small stream from adjacent hillslope were deposited in rapid flow environment. Thirdly, deposition of round gravels was ceased by earth uplift, and shore platform was constructed by abrasion process of energy of swash moving forward. As altitude of shore platform is equal to high tidal level of spring tide, compared it with present high tidal level of study area, earth is uplifted about 105m since shore platform was formed. Fourthly, much sandy sediments transported from offshore bottom covered shore platforms and marine terrace deposits. Lighter sediments among sandy sediments was blown to back, formed secondary sand dune since about 500 year.
The rhizobacterial diversity associated with 9 native plant species inhabiting coastal sand dunes in Tae-an area, Chungnam Province, was studied using the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting analysis over three times from October 2003 to March 2004. One dominant band commonly occurred in all of the rhizosphere samples, which was identified as that of Lysobacter enzymogenes. The other common bands included those derived from species of Pseudomonas and Bacillus. It was notable that L. enzymogenes was dominant in all of the 9 plant species and such dominance was consistent throughout the whole sampling period, which confirms the previous study by Lee et al. (2006a). The Bacillus bands were detected in all of the three samplings, and those of Pseudomonas were notable in the samples of December 2003. By the DGGE analysis alone, the significance of Lysobacter to the sand dune plants is not clear. However, considering their presence in healthy plants and the dominance in all plant species, Lysobacter may have positive roles in the survival or growth of the plants in sand dune area.

The aim of this study is to analyze the short-term changes of beach and dune morphology at Hwajin beach, Korea using by terrestrial LIDAR. Based on ArcInfo as point cloud obtained through precise analyzing studying area twice (1st : Sep 1. 2010, 2nd : Oct 2nd. 2010) by terrestrial LIDAR, alteration of beach and dune was analyzed at DEM, of which cell size is about 10cm. Consequently, during the studying period, coastlines at studying area moved backward and reduced the area of coastal zone. In a section change, the north beach moved backward with more eroded beach face and the middle section of south beach moved forward with more deposited beach face. Considering all the section changes of beach at studying area, beach section during the 1st measurement period can be defined as a summer profile, and it can be explained that the temporary storm profile was formed by the strong wave created during studying period. As a result of analyzing the alteration of beach area by terrestrial LIDAR, alteration of narrow area was able to be analyzed in detail by class of 'centimeter' and the time was able to be shortened.
Background: Cakile edentula (Bigelow) Hook. is a successful invader that has been propagating globally. In Korea, Cakile edentula was found in 2008 for the first time, in the east coast of Korean peninsula. Based on site surveys conducted thereafter, Cakile edentula has propagated in the east coast from Goseong to Jeongdongjin, Gangneung and in the west coast of city of Hwaseong of Gyeonggi-do Province, and Taeangun County of Chungcheongnam-do Province. Results: Cakile edentula has infiltrated into four different vegetation communities (syntaxa) (Calystegio soldanellaeSalsoletum komarovii Ohba, Miyawakiet Tx.1967; Elymo-caricetum Kobomugi Miyawaki 1967; Carex pumila; and Calystegia soldanella) belonging to phytosociological classes of saltwort (barilla) and coastal glehnia. Cakile edentula competes with dominant species such as the saltwort (barilla) and beach morning glory, causing qualitative changes in species composition. It also affects local ecosystems through its competition with indigenous species, causing destruction of the traditional landscape. Conclusions: However, competition of Cakile edentula with indigenous species and the resulting replacement of such species are limitedly reported. Potential competitors with Cakile edentula have not been found yet. In Northeast Asia, qualitative changes realized in local ecosystems due to invasion of Cakile edentula are significantly noticeable. These necessitate proper controls for this invasive alien species to protect and preserve coastal dune areas.
This study was investigated to the conditions of coastal disaster prevention forests in coastal sand dune in Korea. As a result new planed area were about 250.05ha of 576 sites and average area per site is about 0.43ha. Therefore, it is necessary to readjust it in 1 ha/site for standard of new plan area and 10 ha/year for establishment quantity. In addition, the maintenances methods for about 1,479 ha in the forested area of coastal disaster prevention forest and the basic investigations for forests close to coastal were carried out as soon as possible.
This study intended to identify causes of poor tree vigor in the Hanbando coastal forest by investigating its geographical environment, climate condition, soil physicochemical characteristics, and growth condition of Pinus thunbergii. It divided the forest into an area with poor tree vigor or dead standing trees and a control area with good tree vigor and examined them separately. The survey showed that stand density was significantly higher in the area with poor tree vigor. In contrast, the crown width in the area with good tree vigor was wider. The number of dead standing trees and the stand density showed a negative correlation. The stand density and diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, crown height, and crown width also showed a negative correlation. The result indicated that, as the tree's stand density increases, the crowns of individual trees overlapped and the lower branches died. Then crown height and crown width decreased, and the number of leaves and photosynthesis was reduced, leading to lower tree height and weaker growth of breast diameter. As a result, tree vigor weakened, and combined with environmental pressures from the lack of moisture and nutrients in coastal soil and salty wind, P. thunbergii in coastal areas is expected to die massively. Although the causes of dead standing trees and poor tree vigor of P. thunbergii in the Hanbando coastal forest are complicated, poor management of adequate tree density in response to the growth of P. thunbergii is the primary cause. The secondary cause is external environmental pressures, including unfavorable soil conditions and salty and strong wind that obstruct the growth of P. thunbergii.

There have been growing concerns for the sea level rise due to global warming in recent years. Sea level rise is a serious problem to densely populated coastal areas, because it may affect the coastal landforms to be damaged. Especially coastal sand deposits like coastal dunes are more sensitive than the other coastal landforms. In this paper, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating method were used to identify the Holocene geomorphic changes of coastal dune field in Shinduri located at the western coast. The main results in this study that are the dunefield in the study area may have begun to form at around 6.8 ka and it has grown seaward thereafter. Then, dunefield appears to have extensively developed since 3.7 ka. This result, together with previous works on the sea level and climatic changes in the western coast of Korea suggest that the dunefield has been affected by the sea level regression since the Holocene high stand in the Holocene at around 6 ka and climatic change from warm and humid to cold and dry conditions occurred at 4.5 ka.
To verify growth properties of Carex kobomugi, above and belowground parts of C. kobomugi were surveyed on coastal sand dune at Sinduri, Choongnam Province from April, 2001 to June 2003. The results were the same as follows. In coastal sand dune, C. kobomugi followed Elymus mollis from mean high tide line. Density of C. kobomugi was the highest at unstable sand dune and 150 plants/㎡. And rates of flowering plant were 70% at unstable area and 10% at stable area. C.kobomugi is thus plant that adapted to unstable sand dune. Shoot distributed irregularly. The rhizome of C. kobomugi gradually decreased with the soil depth in unstable area, but mainly distributed to 20 ㎝ depth. New rhizome could be generated from the rhizome which was below 150 ㎝ depth or 5 years old. The number and length of new rhizome were related to biomass of previous year's shoot. That was, shoots which were below 0.5 and over 3 g/shoot in dry weight generated 1 and 5 rhizomes, respectively. And the mean lengths of rhizome from small (below 0.5 g) and large (over 3.0 g) shoots were 13.0 ㎝ and 57.6 ㎝, respectively.
This study aims to figure out the vegetation status and characteristics of the spatial distribution in Taeanhaean National Park. As a result, vegetation communities were Pinus thunbergii community, Pinus densiflora community, Pinus thunbergii-Pinus densiflora community, Camellia japonica community, Carpinus turczaninowii community, Carpinus turczaninowii-Pinus thunbergii community, Kalopanax septemlobus community, Koelreuteria paniculata community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, and sand dune and coastal wetland vegetation including Vitex rotundifolia community, Elymus mollis community, Calamagrostis epigeios community, Ischaemum anthephoroides community, Zoysia sinica community, Suaeda maritima community, and Phragmites communis community. Landscape types in actual vegetation map were Pinus thunbergii community (3.92%), Pinus densiflora community (1.40%), Robinia pseudoacacia community (0.05%), sand dune and coastal wetland vegetation (0.11%), field (0.46%), seashore (0.24%), thinning area (0.08%), bareground (0.16%), and sea (93.58%). Area of Pinus thunbergii community among vegetation type was $14.797km^2$ (3.92%) and the largest. Stratification structure and species composition of Pinus thunbergii community distributed in the seashore were different as a result of disturbance and human use. On the other hand, we assumed that succession will take place to the potential natural vegetation that is Quercus serrata and Quercus dentata in undisturbed Pinus thunbergii community. Meanwhile, Erechtites hieracifolia was occupied in understory of Pinus thunbergii community around the seashore and Diodia teres was invaded to sand dune vegetation. They may affect on natural species negatively. Therefore, monitoring and management plans are necessary.

The Baengnyeongdo-island, located at the northernmost point of the west coast, has developed several coastal landforms. Although the coastal landforms of Baengnyeongdo-island are widely used as a tourism resource, a lot of academic research has not been conducted. In this study, particle size analysis, XRF, and OSL age dating were performed on the BR sandy deposits to find out the formation of coastal sand dunes on Baengnyeongdo-island. Based on the physicochemical properties, the BR section was divided into three parts; BR-A, BR-B and BR-C. First, about 56ka, which corresponds to the MIS 3, fine sand was deposited and forms the BR-C section. Second, the BR-B which located middle part of BR section, showed reversed age stratigraphy. The BR-B was interpreted as reworked sediments based on sedimentary facies and chemical weathering intensity. And, the BR-A composed of fine and medium sands was formed in middle Holocene. This research has significance in that it finds out the paleo sand dunes formed in Pleistocene. This study can contribute to understanding coastal sand dune development on the west coast.
