  • This study examined the electrochemical deposition and dissolution of lithium on nickel electrodes in 1 mol $dm^{-3}$ (M) $LiPF_6$ dissolved in propylene carbonate (PC) containing different 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) concentrations as a co-solvent. The DME concentration was found to have a significant effect on the reactions occurring at the electrode. The poor cycleability of the electrodes in the pure PC solution was improved considerably by adding small amounts of DME. This results suggested that the dendritic lithium growth could be suppressed by using co-solvents. After hundredth cycling in the 1 M $LiPF_6$/PC:DME (67:33) solution, almost no dead lithium has been found from the disassembled cell, resulting from suppression of dendritic lithium growth. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that dendritic lithium formation was greatly affected by the ratio of DME. Raman spectroscopy results suggested that the structure of solvated lithium ions is a crucial important factor in suppressing dendritic lithium formation.

  • This study was directed to finding an optimum extraction condition of genistein from the S. flavescens with supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. In this effort, effects of the extraction conditions including pressure, temperature and a co-solvent on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The aqueous ethanol and methanol solutions were used as co-solvents while the tested operating pressure and temperature ranges were from 200 bar to 300 bar and from 308.15 K to 323.15 K, respectively. The concentration of genistein was determined by means of HPLC equipped with a UV detector. From the results, it was observed that an increase in pressure led to the higher extraction efficiency. Further, methanol showed better performance as a co-slovent than ethanol. The DPPH radical scavenging activities were measured to compare antioxidant activities of S. flavescens extracts.

  • Organic solvent-based enteric coating technology using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP) has been developed for many years due to low water solubility of HPMCP. In this work, aqueous HPMCP nanoparticles (HPMCP-NPs) were prepared by neutralization emulsification method using HPMCP powder and ammonium hydroxide (NH40H) in the absence of any organic solvent and emulsifier. • Solvolysis rate constants for methylchloroformate, $CH_3O$(CO)Cl, methylthiono-chloroformate, $CH_3O$(CS)Cl, and methylthiolchloroformate, $CH_3S$(CO)Cl, have been determined conductometrically in acetone-water and acetonitrile-water mixtures, and activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$, have been derived. Results show that in water-rich regions the order of rate increases as $$CH_3O(CO)Cl while in dipolar aprotic solvent-rich region this order reverses. The plots of log k vs. solvent parameters, Y, $\frac{D-1}{2D+1}$ and log($H_2$) show that the order of rate increase in water-rich region is the results of increase in $S_N1$ character. It is concluded that $CH_3S$(CO)Cl solvolyzes via $S_N1$ mechanism whereas $CH_3O$(CO)Cl reacts via $S_N2$ and $CH_3O$(CS)Cl via intermediate mechanism in water-rich region.

  • In this study, a new organophosphorus acid-based solvent (KMC-P) from KMC Co., Ltd. was used for the recovery of the iron chloride etching waste solution. In order to increase the extraction efficiency for the new solvent in the solvent extraction process, we selected the process variables and conducted the optimization experiment according to the DOE to investigate the correlation between the variables. Solvent concentration, pH, and O/A ratio were found to be factors affecting extraction and stripping efficiency. The optimum stripping efficiency was 69.7% when the solvent concentration was 29.4 wt%, the HCl addition amount was 0 mL, and the O/A ratio was 7, and the reliability was more than 86%.

  • The electrochemical behavior of film and charge-discharge capacity of Li-ion cell in 1 M $LiPF_6/EC:DME$ (1 : 1, by volume ratio) electrolyte solution was studied using chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and impedance spectroscopy. The first irreversible capacity was higher than the second irrversible capacity because of solvent decomposition. Especially, passivation film that is electron insulating and ionic conducting were formed on the MPCF by solvent decomposition during the first charge. The solvated Li is co-intercalated with solvent into MPCF electrode. Part of the MPCF is expoliated during co-intercalation of solvent-Li. The MPCF ends up nonuniformly covered by a relatively thick layer of exfoliated particles embedded in a matrix of product by solvent decomposition.

  • In this study, hydroxy polyimide (HPI) was prepared for non-porous membrane by solvent evaporation method. As the result of gas permeance properties measurement, $CO_2$ permeability was 85 Barrer and the $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity was 23 at $30^{\circ}C$. Flat sheet membrane and hollow fiber membrane were prepared by using ternary system of polymer, solvent and non-solvent additive. Morphologies and gas permeance properties were measured by FE-SEM and bubble flow meter. Each $CO_2$ permeability of 18.28 GPU, 70 GPU and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 6.72, 8.63 at $30^{\circ}C$ in the flat sheet membrane and hollow fiber membrane. Hollow fiber membrane has gas permeance property better than flat sheet membrane.

  • Two different micro-flows during the evaporation of ink droplets were achieved by engineering both surface tension gradient and compositional gradient across the ink droplet: (1) Coffee-ring generating flow resulting from the outward flow inside the ink droplet & (2) Marangoni flow leading to the circulation flow inside the ink droplet. The surface tension gradient and the compositional gradient in the ink droplets were tailored by mixing two different solvents with difference surface tension and boiling point. In order to create the coffee-ring generating flow (outward flow), a single-solvent system using N,N-dimethylformamide with nano-sized spherical alumina particles was formulated, Marangoni flow (circulation flow) was created in the ink droplets by combining N,N-dimethylformamide and fotmamide with the spherical alumina powders as a co-solvent ink system. We have investigated the effect of these two different flows on the formation of ceramic films by inkjet printing method, The packing density of the ceramic films printed with two different ink systems (single- and co-solvent systems) and their surface roughness were characterized. The dielectric properties of these inkjet-printed ceramic films such as dielectric constant and dissipation factor were also studied in order to evaluate the feasibility of their application to the electronic ceramic package substrate.

  • Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] microspheres were prepared using solvent evaporation technique. P(3HB-co-4HB) with 3.9 mol% 4HB was synthesized by fed-batch culture of Ralstonia eutropha. The effects of concentration and type of surfactant (Tween 80, sodium dodecylsulfate, and polyvinyl alcohol), addition of dispersion stabilizer (Acacia), concentration of polymer and model drug (bovine serum albumin) on particle size of the microspheres and their in vitro drug release characteristics were investigated. The average particle size of the microspheres decreased with the addition of dispersion stabilizer and increased with the concentration of surfactant, drug and polymer. Amount of drug release increased with decreasing particle size of the microspheres.
