In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability. Flexible media is very thin, very light and very flexible so it behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and large rotation but small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by dynamic FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Mass and tangent stiffness matrices based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by full Newton-Raphson(FNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.
In this paper, to examine the difference between the linear and non-linear static, dynamic analysis for a structure, a cantilevered beam was used. Then, an external transverse static and dynamic loads were applied at the free end of the beam. Classical theories were used for the linear analysis and the EDISON CSD solver, co-rotational dynamic FEM program, was used for nonlinear analysis. In the static analysis, effects of the load for the beam deflection were observed in the linear and nonlinear analysis. Then, normalized displacement of tip of the beam was predicted for different frequency ration and a significant difference was obtained in the vicinity of the resonant frequency. In addition, effects of frequency and time for the beam deflection were investigated to find the frequency delay.

In this paper, the behaviour of a cantilevered beam was predicted to examine the difference between linear and non-linear static, dynamic analysis for a structure by using CR nonlinear formulation. Then, external transverse static and dynamic loads were applied at the free tip of the beam. Classical theories were used for the present linear analysis and co-rotational dynamic FEM program was used for the present nonlinear analysis. In the static analysis, effects of the load for the beam deflection were observed in both linear and nonlinear analysis. In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. Flexible media behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Linear stiffness matrix and geometric nonlinear stiffness matrix based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by Updated Newton-Raphson(UNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.
Piezoelectric composite laminates are a powerful material system that offers vast options to improve structural behavior. Successful design of piezoelectric adaptive structures and testing of control laws call for highly accurate, reliable and numerically efficient numerical tools. This paper puts focus onto linear and geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of smart structures made of such a material system. For this purpose, highly efficient linear 3-node and 4-node finite shell elements are proposed. Both elements employ the Mindlin-Reissner kinematics. The shear locking effect is treated by the discrete shear gap (DSG) technique with the 3-node element and by the assumed natural strain (ANS) approach with the 4-node element. Geometrically nonlinear effects are considered using the co-rotational approach. Static and dynamic examples involving actuator and sensor function of piezoelectric layers are considered.
A series of detailed study was performed to identify the sources of the propeller blade failure and resolve the problem systematically, by use of the theoretical tools and by the direct measurement and observation in the full-scale sea trials. The selection of inexperienced propulsion control system with a reversible gear system is shown to cause the serious damage to the propeller blades in crash astern maneuver, when the rotational direction of the propeller is changed rapidly. Quasi-steady analysis for propeller blade strength using FEM code in bollard backing condition indicates that the safety factor should be order of 18∼20 to avoid the structural failure for the selected propeller geometry and reduction gear system.

New program for springback analysis has been developed to predict the deformation of springback more accurately. Static implicit FEM is used to find out the static equilibrium after springback. The shell element with 6 dogrees of freedom and 4 nodes is carefully implemented to improve the accuracy and the compatibility between forming analysis and springback analysis. Co-rotational approach and Newton-Raphson nonlinear iteration are used to resolve the nonlinearity of large deformation. The benchmark results show that the developed program gives good predictions in comparison with experimental and other commercial S/W's results. As practical examples, U draw bending and S-rail problems are carried out by the developed program.
To satisfy the requirement of magnetically suspended control moment gyroscope (MSCMG) that magnetic bearing can provide torque, a novel 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing (HMB) with integrated structure was designed. Mathematical models of forces and torques are established by using equivalent magnetic circuit method. The current stiffness, displacement stiffness, tilting current stiffness and angular stiffness of the 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing are derived by the mathematical models. Equivalent magnetic circuit method and finite element method (FEM) simulation results indicate that the force has a good linear relationship with both displacement and current, and the torque has a good linear relationship with angular displacement and current. The novel 4DOF HMB is capable of achieving control in both two radial translational degrees of freedom (DOF) and also two radial rotational DOFs. The 4DOF HMB is well adapted to MSCMG system, exhibiting advantages in the controllable DOF, light weight and easy to control.

Owing to high oil prices and environmental issues, the automobile industry has conducted considerable research and made large investments to manufacture a high-efficiency automobiles. In the case of automobile wheels in which a lightweight material is used to increase the fuel efficiency a mold is used to increase the production efficiency; however, the use of the molding method for this purpose is very expensive. Therefore an automobile wheel consists of two parts. In this study a two-piece automobile wheel is manufactured by the friction stir welding(FSW) of Al6061-T6 to reduce the manufacturing cost and process complexity. The FSW welding tool geometry and rotational speed, and the feed rate are key factors that significantly affect the weld strength. Therefore tensile tests were conducted on specimens produced using various welding conditions, and the optimal FSW welding conditions were applied to manufacture aluminum wheels. To ensure reliability, prototype aluminum wheels were manufactured and their mechanical reliability and safety were evaluated using a durability test, fatigue durability test, and impact test. Through this study, aluminum wheel production was made possible using the FSW method.

In this study, the torque transmitting capability of a flexible disk coupling was investigated. Flexible disc coupling is used to transmit power between two axes, and there exist mis-alignments such as angle of deviation and end play between two shafts. A disk is an important part in the flexible disk coupling because the disk has to transmit power between two mis-aligned shafts. To investigate the effect of mis-alignment on load carrying capacity, finite element analyses were carried out. Analyses were carried out for two types of disk; i.e., circular and square disks. The rotational and bending stiffness of disk plates was predicted to investigate the effect of mis-alignment on stress. As a result, it was shown that the mis-alignment can cause severe decrease in load-carrying capacity. And, the square disk showed better performance than the circular disk.
