  • This study investigated elderly winter wearing habits and self-identified thermal tolerance in order to compare differences between older males and older females. We surveyed 269 participants: 119 males (age $76.9{\pm}5.9yr$) and 150 females (age $76.1{\pm}5.7yr$). Thirty one questionnaires were used: Self-identified cold and heat tolerance, clothing behavior, lifestyles related to the cold and health care, etc. High percentage of respondents (both males and females) felt vulnerable to the cold. The total number of outdoor clothes were $9.6{\pm}1.6$ and $10.6{\pm}1.6$ in males and females, respectively (p<.05). Wearing frequencies for thermal underwear were 84.0% and 82.4% in males and females, respectively. The using percentage of auxiliary heating devices was higher in females compared to males (p<.01). Males felt more cold in the head and face compared to females (p<.01). Self-identified cold tolerance had negative relationships with the total number of winter outdoor clothes for both males (r=-0.260) and females (r=-0.222) (p<.01). The perceived old age for both males and females was 72.4 yr. Sex differences should be considered when developing guidelines for winter clothing behavior for the elderly and educating them on how to improve health and cold tolerance.

  • This study examines how exercise habits affect human thermoregulatory responses. A total of 14 healthy male college students participated in this study as subjects: 8 students who exercised regularly (REG) and 6 students who did not (IREG). First, there were no significant differences between REG and IREG in rectal and mean skin temperatures. Second, the general thermal sensation was "slightly warm" at the equilibrium state and "cool" during body cooling in both groups with no significant differences between the two groups. This implies that exercise habits did not affect the subjective thermal sensation under this study's environmental conditions. Third, there were no significant correlations between the preferred temperature and related variables such as rectal and mean skin temperature changes, oxygen uptake, and the general thermal sensation in REG. However, there were significant correlations between the preferred temperature and the mean skin temperature change (p<0.05) and oxygen uptake(p<0.01) in IREG. In sum, these results suggest weak effects of exercise habits on daily life at the individual level. Therefore, future research should verify this study's results under controlled conditions such as cooling intensity and durations.

  • This study investigated how experience of creative dressing tasks influences consumers' perceptions and behavior towards clothing consumption. Consumer creativity can solve several problems in consumption practices; however, few studies have analyzed it in the consumption context. This study adopted an action research method so that consumers could experience creative clothing consumption in their daily lives. In-depth interviews and participant observations were conducted on eight adults in their 20s and 30s. Participants had to dress creatively 10 times and recorded their creative fashion styles, the ideas they used, and their feelings during the tasks in a consumer diary. The main results were as follows. Participants regarded the meaning of creative dressing as a 'visually novel, transformative, and hiding the physical flaws'. Based on these characteristics of creative dressing, they showed many creative ideas by expanding the product usages or varying coordination among the fashion items. As a result of the task experience, participants became aware their stagnant fashion style and reflected on shopping habits and low clothing usage-efficiency. This study is meaningful in that it systematically explored creative clothing consumption behavior step by step from a consumer perspective.

According to the results, the types of disability causing difficulty in terms of clothing habits are limb disorders and sensory defects among the types of physical disability. The results of the quantitative measurement on studies indicated that the number of studies increased almost twice as much before 2000. Particularly with the development of new technology and fashion trends, the number of studies on design increased. The topics of studies are found in design development, construction for disabled, and understanding clothing life. The design development topic is about suggesting functional designs that can protect the human body or aid in the use of rehabilitation devices. The construction topic for the disabled is to improve the inconvenience of wearing clothes, particularly for those with limb disorders. Lastly, the topic of examining clothing life is about using new technology to provide individuals with sensory defects with information about clothing life or the current status of the clothing market for the disabled.

The purpose of this study was to obtain the basic data for developing healthy and comfortable clothing for elderly women. Clothing weight, thermal sensation, clothing microclimate, resistance to cold and heat of 198 elderly women in Taejeon were surveyed from October 9, 2007 to October 19, 2007. 1. Clothing weight per body surface area was $830.4g/m^2$ of total clothing weight, $242.8g/m^2$ of underwear clothing weight, $617.3g/m^2$ of outerwear clothing weight, $419.8g/m^2$ of upper clothing weight, and $420.4g/m^2$ of lower clothing weight. 2. More than 90% of the respondents replied that they felt comfortable when the temperature inside the clothing was $33.5^{\circ}C$ and humidity inside the clothing was 30.2%. 3. The elderly women were more sensible to cold than to hot, those who felt cold had a tendency to wear heavier clothing. 4. The appeal rate for physical pain of older and lower income people, especially those with an income under 1,000,000 won, was higher than that of others. On the other hand, the lower the subjective economic level, the younger they were, and the more the monthly average income was, the higher the rate of mental pain. 5. The heavier the total clothing weight was, the higher the appeal rate for general pain.
