  • This study deals with a kind of signal processing, Kalman filtering techniques, which are applied to ultrasound signal to improve resolution capability. The main advantage of Kalman filter algorithm for the analysis of reflected ultrasound signal is its recursive structure which can be easily adapted to time-varing system. In state-space description of the system, the 6th order system produces the best spectral approximation to the source pulse. As a result of spectrum analysis, 6th order estimator for two closely spaced (0.5mm) reflectors enhance resolution by 4dB - 10dB. By using this result, the possibility to detect even minute tumor is found.

  • We analyze the cooperative spontaneous emission of optically excited nanocrystals into surface plasmon polaritons propagating on the surface of a cylindrical metallic nanowire. The spontaneous emission probability of the nanocrystals is obtained by perturbative expansions with and without dipole-dipole interaction among nanocrystals in order to see the cooperative effects. The spontaneous emission probability depends on the radial and axial distributions, as well as on the dipolar orientation of nanocrystals. It is shown that the spontaneous emission probability is strongly influenced by dipole-dipole interaction, axial distribution, and dipolar orientation of nanocrystals for closely spaced nanocrystals.

  • Faults are fractures along which there is visible offset by shear displacement parallel to the fracture surface. Faults can occur as single discrete breaks, but where the rock has been repeatedly faulted, or where the rock is especially weak, no discrete break may be evident. What forms instead is a fault zone composed of countless subparallel and interconnecting closely spaced fault surfaces. Faulting is fundamentally a brittle mechanism for achieving shear displacement. At deep crustal levels where rocks tend to deform plastically under conditions of elevated temperature and confining pressure, shear displacement is achieved by and development of shear zones. In this paper authors propose the fault grade in Korea.

  • One of the main purposes of this paper is to propose a high resolution direction finding method performing particularly well under the circumstances such as correlated sensor noises, very closely spaced signal sources, and low signal-to-noise ratio(S/N), in array signal processing. Furthermore, the other is to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method for each circumstance described above, in comparison with the methods previously developed.

  • A Data-based Covariance Matrix(DCM) is introduced in the Eigenvector(EV) method, among subspace methods of estimating multiple sinusoidal frequencies from finite white noisy measurements. It is shown that the EV with the DCM can obtain the true. frequencies from finite noiseless data Some asymptotic results and further improvement on the DCM are also presented mathematically. Monte-carlo simulations are statistically conducted from the view-points of means and standard deviations in the EV's of DCM and Conventional Covariance Matrix(CCM). Simulations show a great promise for using the DCM, particularly for the cases of short data records, closely spaced frequencies and high signal-to-noise ratios.

  • In this paper, we address the problem of closely spaced source localization using sensor array processing. In particular, the performance efficiency (measured in terms of the root mean square error) of the unconditional maximum likelihood (UML) algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of near-field sources is evaluated. Four parameters are considered in this evaluation: angular separation among sources, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), number of snapshots, and number of sources (multiple sources). Simulations are conducted to illustrate the UML performance to compute the DOA of sources in the near-field. Finally, results are also presented that compare the performance of the UML DOA estimator with the existing multiple signal classification approach. The results show the capability of the UML estimator for estimating the DOA when the angular separation is taken into account as a critical parameter. These results are consistent in both low SNR and multiple-source scenarios.

  • In the side scan sonar method, use is made of the back-scattering, at low grazing angles of incidence to the seabed, of relatively high-frequency acoustic waves radiated in a fan-shaped beam from a transducer contained in a towed body. The fan beam is oriented so that the wider angle is in the vertical plane (scan range) and the narrower angle in the horizontal plane (beam width) with the axis of the beam normal to the ship track. The display of the returns is usually realized as a series of closely spaced intensity-modulated lines on a paper recorder or computer screen display. In this way a two-dimensional picture of the seabed is build up.

  • The formation of preferred orientations in cold rolled and recrystallized Inconel 690 sheets was studied by the x-ray texture measurements and TEM observations. The increasing{220} pole intensity in the plane normal at the higher reductions was related to the{110}<112> texture component. The rolling texture of the Inconel 690 was the pure metal type. THe dislocation cells were found in the near{110}<112> oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111>oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111> oriented grains. The onset of deformation twins in the {112}<111> oriented grains caused the weakening of {112}<111> and the development of {552}<115> in the rolling texture. The annealing texture of the Inconel 690 sheets was dependent on the annealing temperature. The annealing texture of 750$^{\circ}C$ annealed sheets was similar to the cold rolling texture. The major preferred orientations of the 950$^{\circ}C$ annealed specimens were {112}<110> and {001}<110>. The formation of fine and closely spaced annealing twins in the specimen annealed at 1150$^{\circ}C$ led to the randomization of the annealing texture.

  • Conventional confinement reinforcement for rectangular columns consist of closely spaced perimeter hoops, overlapping hoops, and crossties. One of the potential alternatives to conventional reinforcement is a welded reinforcement grid, prefabricated to required size and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the strength and deformability of reinforced concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids. The comparisons of the envelopes of experimental force-displacement hysteric relationships for columns confined by welded grids with analytically generated force-displacement curves for columns confined with conventional ties. In general, inelastic deformability beyond the peak, as indicate by the slope of the cuvers, was similar to those indicated by columns with conventional ties. The superior performance of columns with welded grids may be attributed to the improved confinement characteristics of grids associated with increased rigidity of welded ties.

  • Pullout tests of single headed bars using plain concrete blocks indicate that the embedment depth of $10d_b$ is in general required for the headed bars to develop pullout strength equivalent to 125% of bar yield strength. In this experimental study, test results of multiple headed bars installed in reinforced concrete column sections are presented. Test variables included embedment depth, column main reinforcement ratio, and spacing of column ties. 2D29 bars were pulled out at one time from normal strength concrete. Test results indicated that the embedment depths, column tie spacings, and column main reinforcement ratios all influenced the pullout strengths of the headed bars. When the embedment depth was not sufficient, narrow tie spacings especially resulted in increased pullout strengths of the headed bars. Test results also indicated that the embedment depth of 15㏈ was sufficient for the closely spaced two headed bars (head-to-head spacing =$6d_b$) to develop pullout strength equivalent to 125% of the bar yield strength.
