  • The measures for environmental regulations have become more strict over the recent years. Due to vibration and noise arising from blasting, every site that chooses to handle explosives has to be under certain restrictions in its use. Especially a site where a safety thing is situated within close proximity, the chosen method is through mechanical excavation. However, various applications of electronic detonators has made blasting possible where mechanical excavation used to be the only alternative. Hanwha Corporation has developed an electronic detonator, $HiTRONIC^{TM}$, which is an advanced fourth-generation detonator with a high accuracy of delay time(0.01%). At this moment, $HiTRONIC^{TM}$ is widely used in highway and railway construction sites, large limestone quarries, and many other blasting sites where blasting had not been an available option before. In this paper, I would like to introduce a case study on construction of utilizing $HiTRONIC^{TM}$ at a large-scale tunnel site.

Factors Affecting Potential Disaster Damage and Perceptible Stress Influencing Evacuation Behavior (재난피해가능성불안 및 지각된 스트레스가 대피행동에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to identify factors affecting anxiety about disaster damage potential in Gyonggi-do and evacuation behavior that influences evacuation behavior. Method: Multiple regression analysis was performed to test the hypothesis and to analyze the influence of anxiety about disaster damage potential and perceived stress, and analyzed similarity in correspondence between age and anxiety about disaster damage potential. Results: The anxiety about disaster damage potential of a group vulnerable to safety and anxiety about disaster damage potential of disaster system collapse were perceived in close proximity. Disaster system collapse, evacuation life, and natural disasters were found to be factors affecting perceived stress. Stress and natural disasters were found to be influencing factors on evacuation behavior. Conclusion: The necessity of managing stress was confirmed since anxiety about natural disaster damage potential and stress affect evacuation behavior. The recent experiences of heavy rain disasters indicate that the anxiety about disaster damage potential is expected to increase. The findings also indicate the importance of preventive planning and psychological management to manage the anxiety about disaster damage potential.

Numerical Investigation on Interference Effects of Tandem Rotor in Forward Flight (전진 비행하는 탠덤로터의 간섭효과에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the interference effects due to tandem rotor's overlap in the forward flight. To resolve the instabilities caused by close proximity of the wake to the blade surface, the field velocity approach is implemented to the existing unsteady panel code coupled with a time-marching free wake model. The modified code is then used to investigate the effects of the selected parameters on the forward flight performance of the tandem rotor. The calculated results for rotor separation effect indicate that stagger(d/D) appears to have little effects on the forward flight performance at high advance ratio and the square of gap(H/D) is inversely proportional to overlap induced power factor. In addition, it is also shown that the overlap induced power factor increases to a certain extent and decrease back as the advance ratio increases.

A Study on Estimation of Inflow Wind Speeds in a CFD Model Domain for an Urban Area (도시 지역 대상의 CFD 모델 영역에서 유입류 풍속 추정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of flow around the Daeyeon automatic weather station (AWS 942) and established formulas estimating inflow wind speeds at a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model domain for the area around Pukyong national university using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Simulated wind directions at the AWS 942 were quite similar to those of inflows, but, simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 decreased compared to inflow wind speeds except for the northerly case. The decrease in simulated wind speed at the AWS 942 resulted from the buildings around the AWS 942. In most cases, the AWS 942 was included within the wake region behind the buildings. Wind speeds at the inflow boundaries of the CFD model domain were estimated by comparing simulated wind speeds at the AWS 942 and inflow boundaries and systematically increasing inflow wind speeds from $1m\;s^{-1}$ to $17m\;s^{-1}$ with an increment of $2m\;s^{-1}$ at the reference height for 16 inflow directions. For each inflow direction, calculated wind speeds at the AWS 942 were fitted as the third order functions of the inflow wind speed by using the Marquardt-Levenberg least square method. Estimated inflow wind speeds by the established formulas were compared to wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs near the AWS 942. The results showed that the estimated wind speeds fell within the inter quartile range of wind speeds observed at 12 coastal AWSs during the nighttime and were in close proximity to the upper whiskers during the daytime (12~15 h).

  • The purpose of this research is to assess the efficiency of the airline's route. The revenue source of low cost airline carriers is not various unlike regular airline carriers, because they are operating only domestic and international flights for a country of close proximity. In particular, domestic low-cost airlines in Korea can't provide cargo transport services but rely on passengers and additional services to generate profits. Therefore, it is absolutely important to maintain a low cost and effective passenger transport line. This study will suggest the way to improve efficiency of route operated by low-cost airlines. Analysis method is DEA. The input parameters and output results were selected by existing research. Based on the results of this study, it will be able to assist establishing routes and selling strategies of the low-cost airlines.

Analysis of Vehicle Noise Effect by Microphone Position and Road Geometry (도로 기하구조에 따른 차량 Microphone 위치별 소음 영향 분석)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of study is to understand the characteristic of driving noise from the front and rear tire for effective active noise cancellation application. METHODS : As literature review, noise measurement methods were reviewed. Noise measurement conducted at three kind of section by road slope using CPX(Close Proximity Method). Noise data was compared by total sound pressure level and 1/3 octave band frequency sound pressure level. Also, each section was compared by T-test using SPSS. RESULTS : In the case of the uphill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low and high frequency band. In the case of high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri, the sound pressure level of the front tire was higher than that of the rear tire in high frequency. Also, in the case of the downhill section, it was shown that the sound pressure level of the front tire at Sugwang-Ri and Sinchon-RI sections was higher than that of the rear tire in low frequency band. However, the sound pressure levels of both the front and rear tires were approximately the same in the high slope section of Sangsaek-Ri. The result of T-test showed that total sound pressures of the front and rear tires were not different from each other in the case of high slope and high speed. CONCLUSIONS: Road slope was not an important variable for effective active noise cancellation.

Success and Failure of Surgical Endodontic Treatment in Molar Teeth

  • Despite the latest advancement made in its techniques and devices/apparatuses and the resulting rising expectation in the field of dental surgery, apicoectomy performed in the molar teeth remains a technical challenge and lacks evidence substantiated by long-term follow-up studies. This study sought to investigate the treatment outcomes and post-operative success rate in the root-end resected molar teeth accompanied by a high level of surgical risks due to their close proximity to the mandibular canal and maxillary sinus. A total of 68 patients who received treatment at Livingwell Dental Hospital between 2004 and 2010 and underwent apical surgery in the maxillary or mandibular molar area were enrolled in this study. A total of 160 roots collected from 75 molar teeth were subjected to surgical endodontic treatment and subsequently evaluated clinically as well as radiographically. Based on the results of the study, the clinical success rate was found to be 78.8% in cases involving radiological healing. Likewise, 90.7% of the roots recorded a robust clinical survival rate, but with incomplete healing as shown by radiography. The results indicate that the apical procedure involving molar teeth is a prognosis-friendly method that promises positive outcomes and higher success rate based on long-term follow-up observations.

Frontier Orbitals of Fifteen C20H17(OH)3 Regioisomers: Hybrid DFT B3LYP Study

  • The hybrid density-functional (B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) method was used to analyze the substitution effect on the $C_{20}H_{20}$ cage based on calculation of the frontier orbitals of fifteen $C_{20}H_{17}(OH)_3$ derivatives. All substitution products were geometrically optimized without constraints and confirmed by frequency analysis. The results suggest that the cis-1 cis-1 cis-2 regioisomer is the most stable isomer, which implies that hydrogen bonding exerts a stronger effect on the relative energies of the trihydroxide than long-range interactions. Thus, this supports the experimental result in which the bisvicinal tetrol was of particular preparative-synthetic interest. While the LUMO of each of the $C_{20}H_{17}(OH)_3$ regioisomers was equivalently delocalized over the void within the cage, the HOMO was limitedly delocalized on substituents and carbons in close proximity to the substituents. The characteristics of the HOMO of each of the regioisomers vary based on the substitution sites. This indicates that the 15 regioisomers of each $C_{20}H_{20}$ trisubstituted derivative might undergo an entirely different set of characteristic chemical reactions with electrophilic reagents. The results further suggest that the penta-substituted OH groups on the surface of the fullerene cage are more likely to be localized on a pentagon than to be homogeneously delocalized.

Effect of Ginseng on Calretinin Expression in Mouse Hippocampus Following Exposure to 835 MHz Radiofrequency

  • Exponential rise in the use of mobile communication devices has generated health concerns due to radiofrequency (RF) exposure due to its close proximity to the head. Calcium binding proteins like calretinin regulate the levels of calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) which plays an important role in biological systems. Ginseng is known for maintaining equilibrium in the human body and may play a beneficial radioprotectant role against electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. In the present study, we evaluated the radioprotective effects of red ginseng (RG) extract in a mouse model. Calretinin (CR) expression was measured using a free-floating immunohistochemical method in the hippocampus of mice after 835 MHz EMF exposure for 5 h/d for 5 d at specific absorption rate=1.6 W/kg for the different experimental groups. The control animals were treated with NaCl while the experimental animals received 10 mg/kg ginseng, or 30 mg/kg; EMF exposed mice were also treated with NaCl, 10 mg/kg ginseng (E10), or 30 mg/kg (E30). Decreases in CR immunoreactivity (IR) along with loss of CA1 and CA3 interneurons and infragranular cells were observed in the ENaCl group while such losses were not observed in the E10 and E30 groups. CR IR significantly increased in the RG-treated group compared to control and EMF-exposed groups treated with NaCl. The study demonstrates that RG extract can serve as a radioprotective agent that maintains $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis and prevents neuronal loss in the brain hippocampal region caused by RF exposure.

A Parametric Study of Sheet Pile Wall Near the Laterally Loaded Pile (횡방향 재하 말뚝 주변의 널말뚝에 관한 변수연구)

  • Construction of sheet pile retaining walls in urban and coastal regions has resulted in sheet pile walls in close proximity to laterally loaded pile foundations. However, there is currently little information available in the literature to assist engineers for quantifying the response of sheet pile walls. This study provides a quantitative method for estimating sheet pile wall response due to loads imposed from a nearby laterally loaded pile. Three dimensional finite element analyses using commercial software, ABAQUS, were performed to assess the response of a sheet pile wall and nearby laterally loaded pile. The soils were modeled using Drucker-Prager constitutive model with associated flow rule, and the sheet pile wall and pile foundation were assumed to behave linear elastic. Four parameters were investigated: sheet pile wall bending stiffness, distance from the pile face to the wall, excavation depth in front of the sheet pile wall, and elastic modulus of the soil. Results from the analyses have been used to develop preliminary design charts and simple equations for estimating the maximum horizontal displacement and maximum bending moment in the sheet pile wall.
