Ultramafic xenoliths from southeastern part of Jeju Island can be grouped into two types: Type I and Type II. Type I xenoliths are magnesian and olivine-rich peridotite (mg#=89-91), which are commonly found at the outcrop. Most previous works have been focused on Type I xenoliths. Type II xenoliths, consisting of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene with higher Fe and Ti components (mg#=77-83) and lower Mg, Ni, Cr, are reported in this study. They are less common with a more extensive compositional range. The studied Type II xenoliths are wehrlite, olivine-clinopyroxenite, olivine websterite, and websterite. They sometimes show ophitic textures in outcrops indicating cumulate natures. The textural characteristics, such as kink banding and more straight grain boundaries with triple junctions, are interpreted as the result of recrystallization and annealing. Large pyroxene grains have exsolution textures and show almost the same major compositions as small exsolution-free pyroxenes. Although the exsolution texture indicates a previous high-temperature history, all mineral phases are completely reequilibrated to some lower temperature. Orthopyroxenes replacing clinopyroxene margin or olivine indicate an orthopyroxene enrichment event. Mineral phases of Type II are compared with Type I xenoliths, gabbroic xenoliths, and the host basalts. Those from Type II xenoliths show a distinct discontinuity with those from Type I mantle xenoliths, whereas they show a continuous or overlapping relation with those from gabbroic xenoliths and the host basalts. Our petrographic and geochemical results suggest that the studied type II xenoliths appear to be cumulates derived from the host magma-related system, being formed by early fractional crystallization, although these xenoliths may not be directly linked to the host basalt.
This study reports petrography and geochemical characteristics of the basalt lava flows in Seongsan-Ilchulbong area, the easternpart of Jeju island, Korea, to understand the evolutionary processes of magma. Basalt lavas are classified into the Pyoseon-ri basalt and the Seongsan-ri basalt. The Pyoseon-ri basalt is dark-gray colored with many vescicles, and mainly consists of olivine, feldspar and rarely of clinopyroxene as phenocrysts. The Seongsan-ri basalt is largely aphanitic basalt and bright-gray colored, divided into two lava-flow units: lower lava flow (B1) and upper lava flow (B2) by the intercalated yellowish lapillistone and paleosol. The lavas plotted into sub-alkaline tholeiitic basalt and alkaline basalt series. The tholeiitic basalts have characteristically higher $SiO_2,\;FeO^T$, and CaO contents, but lower $TiO_2,\;K_2O,\;P_2O_5$ and other incompatible elements compared to the alkali basalts. The tholeiitic basalts have higher $SiO_2$ to the same MgO contents than the alkalic basalts. The contents of Ni, Cr, and MgO show a strong positive correlation, which indicates that low-MgO phases like plagioclase and titanomagnetite were important during the differentiation of magma. The contents of incompatible elements against that of Th show a strong positive correlation. The chondrite-nomalized REE patterns of tholeiitic and alkalic basalts are subparallel each other. LREEs contents of the former are lower than, but HREEs contents are similar to the latter. They both are similar to their K/Ba ratios. The primitive-mantle normalized spider diagram demonstrates that the contents of Ba and Th of all basaltic magma are enriched, and yet Cr, Ni are depleted. The tholeiitic and alkalic basalts may be originated from a different degree of the partial melting of the same mantle material source, and one shows a higher degree of the partial melting than the other.
Rare and unusual occurrence of hydrothermal minerals were found in Geode mine area. They are developed in the late stage of hydrothermal alteration of earlier skarns and later by the open-space filling crystallization. The alteration of earlier skarns of clinopyroxene, garnet, and plagioclase formed mainly chlorite or sometimes uncommon hydrothermal minerals of prehnite, illite, and pumpellyite. Open-space filling crystallization characterized by hydrothermal minerals developedin open sapce or good are prehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and Ca-zeolites of stilbite annstellerite. Mineral phases and paragenesis are examined in detail by microscopy, XRD, SEM, and EPMA. Using the Schreinemaker's method, equibrium reactions among these minerals are establishedand isothemal-isobaric phase diagrams of $\mu$$H_2O$-$\mu$$CO_2$cot are plotted. Hydrothermal minerals such asprehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and some chlorite were ffrmed under high partial pressure of $CO_2$with relatively low $H_2$O fugacity. Later, stilbite and calcite in association with illite crystallized under relatively both high partial Pressure of $CO_2$and high $H_2$O fugacity.
The volcanic rocks of Ulleungdo reveal very high alkali element abundances and most of them have high K20/Na20 ratios and belong to potassium-series. Ulleungdo volcanics show very wide range of variation in their composition from basalts to trachytic basalt, basaltic trachyandesite, trachyandesite, and finally to trachyte on total alkali-silica diagram. Such a general trend of compositional variation can be explained well by differentiation due to fractional crystallization of various minerals. Olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, ilmenite, and apatite are suggested as the major fractionated minerals. Ulleungdo volcanics show Nb/U and PbICe ratios similar to oceanic volcanics such as MORB and OIB, but significantly different .from volcanic rocks of island arc environments, which suggest that they are not directly related with subduction along the Japanese arc. LREE abundances of Ulleungdo volcanics are highly enriched compared with HREE abundances ((La)N=193-420, (L~)~=7.5-19.5).O nly trachyte-1 show appreciable negative Eu anomalies among various rock types, which suggests significant amount of plagioclase were fractionated. However, trachyte-2, trachyte-3, phonolite, and pumice reveal quite different variation trend of trace and rare earth element abundances from trachyte-1, which suggest that they have originated from different magma batches and have experienced different differentiation processes. A prominent bimodal distribution, thus lacking of intermediate composition, is observed from the Ulleundo volcanics.
We attempted to show the evolution of the magma and the geochemical characteristics of dikes and dike swarms by using the petrographic and geochemical data from 287 dikes, SE Korea. The dikes can be divided into mafic, intermediate, and felsic dikes in the field. And each of them is subdivided into three groups, two groups, and two groups, respectively. The group (I) among the mafic dikes most pervasively occurs and are distributed in both sides of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YIL), which petrographic and geochemical characteristics are the same. These facts thus, strongly support the results of the previous studies which showed that they were intruded contemporaneously and that YTL was a main tectonic line which restricted the crustal clockwise rotation during the Early Miocene. The geochemical characteristics are discriminated according to the seven groups divided petrographically. The mafic, intermediate and felsic dikes belong to basalt and basaltic andesite, andesite and facile, and rhyolite, respectively, and the magmas mostly belong to calc-alkaline series. The geochemical data indicate that there were the fractional crystallizations of olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase in the mafic dikes. And the content of characteristic elements and tectonic discrimination diagrams show that the dikes were formed from the magma related to the subduction of plate and that the tectonic setting was related to orogenic volcanic arc.
In the Bibong area of the western part of Chungcheongnam-do, ultramafic masses occur as discontinuous isolated lenticular bodies in the Precambrian Kyeonggi gneiss complex. They extend for about 200 m long to NNE directions which are parallel to fault lines in the gneiss complex. The ultramafic masses contact with the adjacent gneiss complex as steeply dipping faults. They are dunites and harzburgites and many of them are partially or completely serpentinized. The ultramafic rocks dominantly show protogranular, equigranular and equigranular-$m{\grave{o}}saic$ textures. They also show porphyroclastic (megacrystic) or recrystallized textures reflecting several stages of metamorphism. They contain varying amounts of olivine $(Fo_{89-92})$, enstatitic to bronzitic orthopyroxene, diopsidic clinopyroxene, tremolitic to pargasitic hornblende, and spinel with serpentine, talc, chlorite, calcite and magnetite. The ultramafic rocks have high magnesium numbers and transitional element contents, low alkali contents and show deplete REE patterns. Comparing with available data, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics shown in the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area are similar to those of worldwide mantle xenoliths and orogenic related ultramafic rocks. The field evidences, petrographical, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics shown in the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area are similar to alpine type ultramafic rocks emplaced into the crust by the faulting as mantle slab types. With the petrographical characteristics, these mineralogical compositions suggest that the ultramafic rocks of the Bibong area have experienced several stages of retrogressive metamorphism in a condition ranging from the upper amphibolite facies to greenschist facies.
Quaternary Jungok basalts are distributed along the old Hantan river in Mid-Korean Peninsula. They were flowed out from Mt. Ori and Upland (680 m), and they formed narrow and long basalt plateau showing the layers of 10 to 20 meters in thickness and about 95 km in length. Fifty seven samples were collected from the study area, and sixteen rock samples were selected and analysed for major and trace elements. The analyzed samples have alkalic composition and show a relatively restricted variation in major element chemistry (except MgO), as comparing to the that of trace element. Based on major element chemistry, a quantitative modelling of fractional crystallization by multiple linear regression method suggests that the chemical evolution of the evolved rocks can be generated by fractionation of olivine, plagioc1ase, clinopyroxene, and magnetite in proportion of 56 : 25 : 17 : 2, respectively. The calculated trace element abundances by mineral proportions estimated from major element modelling, however, underestimate the incompatible element concentrations in the evolved rocks. According to the incompatible element abundances, simple fractional crystallization process has difficulty to explain the chemical variation of the evolved rocks. It seems that the other processes, which enrichment of incompatible elements can occure without concomitant changes in major element compositions, are needed in order to explain the chemical variation of the Jungok basalts. Thus, the major elements and compatible trace elements variations of the Jungok basalts are due to fractional crystallization, but the incompatible elements variation is due to fractional crystallization superimposed on already varying concentrations caused by slightly different degrees of melting of the same source, and/or due to periodic replenishment, tapping and fractionation(RTF) processes.

We conducted investigations into the morphological characterstics and chemical compositions of the microlites included in the obsidians from the North Korean side Baekdusan (NK) and in the obsidian artefacts from the Busan Gadeokdo prehistoric site (BG). The morphology of the microlites from the NK can be divided into three groups, and trichite-acicular and trichite-asteroidal types are predominant. On the other hand the microlites from the BG show various morphological features such as acicular, margarite, lath, and asteroidal types. Silicate microlites from the NK are mostly of Ca-pyroxene compositions (hedenbergite to augite), whereas those from the BG are mostly of biotite (annite) with small amount of clinopyroxene (ferrosilite). It is well understood that the microlites from the NK are different from those from the BG in terms of the morphology, mineral content and mineral composition. Thus the obsidian aretefacts from the Busan Gadeokdo prehistoric site seem to have no genetical relationship to the obsidians from the Baekdusan.
We report petrography, mineral chemistry, and major and trace element chemistry for rare tholeiites in Cheju island where alkalic rocks predominate. Available age data indicate that the tholeiitic magmatism was younger than 0.49Ma, possibly younger than 0.17 Ma. The tholeiites are generally fine-grained, porphyritic rock and show intergranular texture with lath-shaped plagioclase ($An_{61-46}$), orthopyroxene (bronzite) and olivine ($Fo_{78-67}$). Characteristically, two kinds of clinopyroxene (pigeonite and augite) occur only in groundmass. The tholeiites have normative quartz and show limited compositional variations ($SiO_2$=51.0-52.5 wt%; Mg#=54-60). Major and transitional metal element variations of tholeiites are distinct from those of alkaline rocks in MgO diagram, suggestingthat the two rock types cannot be simply related to differentiation process from the same magma. The ratios among $K_2O$, Rb, Ba, Nb and La are similar for both tholeiites and alkali basalts, however the ratios between the elements (P, Y and Yb) having an affinity with garnet and the above elements are higher for tholeiites than for alkali basalts. These trace element ratios suggest that the tholeiites and alkali basalts were produced by different degrees of partial melting from a similar sources material (garnet lherzolite mantle).
The Puu Oo eruption in Hawaii since 1983 is one of the largest eruptions on Hawaii's volcanic history with prominent compositional variation ($5.6{\sim}10.1wt.%$ in MgO content). Although intense researches of Hawaiian eruption have been conducted for recent years, there is no up-to-date study on Puu Oo lavas that is erupting hot lavas today. in oder to obtain basic information on the geological characteristics of the eruption including any noticeable change in its petrological trend and magma dynamics, we applied several geological approaches such as field survey, systematic sampling, petrography, mineralogy, and geochemistry. Clinopyroxene and Plagioclase phenocrysts are rarely observed on the thin section, however Olivine crysts are much more obvious in the study area. It indicates that Puu Oo is early stage of magma differentiation. Variation diagram of whole rock composition shows that the elements such as $TiO_2,\;Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2$ and $Na_2O$ decrease with increasing MgO. In the trace element Sr, Y Zr and V versus $K_2O$, P18, P19 samples are plotted in primitive area. Variations of the Ni contents during $2003{\sim}2006$ may suggest a sudden change in magma composition probably caused by new magma injection.
