  • This paper demonstrates an efficiency improvement of the class E power amplifier (PA) by tuning-out the input capacitance ($C_{IN}$) of the power HBT with a shunt inductance. In order to obtain high output power, the PA needs the large emitter size of a transistor. The larger the emitter size, the higher the parasitic capacitance. The parasitic $C_{IN}$ affects the distortion of the voltage signal at the base node and changes the duty cycle to decrease the PA's efficiency. Adopting the L-C resonance, we obtain a remarkable efficiency improvement of as much as 7%. This PA exhibits output power of 29 dBm and collector efficiency of 71% at 1.9 GHz.

  • In this work, a reduced size 20W quasi class-E Power Amplifier(PA) with defected ground structure load-network is presented for WCDMA base station application. Harmonic impedances required for the class E operation are satisfied by applying the dumbbell and the asymmetric spiral DGS. Open impedance for 2nd harmonic frequency which has the highest power and nearly short impedances for other higher order harmonics are provided by the proposed DGS load-network. The maximum Power Added Efficiency(PAE) of 70.2 % at the output power of 43.1 dBm with the saturated power gain of 12.7 dB is achieved by the proposed quasi class-E PA, which is comparable to the performance of the reference class-E PA. Total size of the proposed class-E PA is only $50{\times}50\;mm^2$ and much smaller than the conventional class-E PA that is loaded with a number of open stubs.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency concurrent dual-band Class-E power amplifier(PA) that is based on a multi-harmonic matching network(MHMN). The proposed MHMN controls the impedance at 1.3 GHz, 2.1 GHz, and their second and third harmonics, respectively, by using transmission lines only rather than switches or lumped components. The dual-band Class-E PA is implemented using Avago ATF-50189 GaAs p-HEMT. The PA exhibits a measured output power of 27.1 dBm and 25.7 dBm, a power gain of 6.1 dB and 4.7 dB, and a drain efficiency of 71.2 % and 60.1 % at 1.3 GHz and 2.1 GHz, respectively.

  • In this paper, highly efficient dual-band class-F power amplifiers(PAs) for cellular and WLAN bands are suggested and implemented. For the first step, single-band class-F amplifiers at 840MHz, 2.4GHz are designed using commercial E-pHEMT FETs. The performance of two single band PAs are as much as 81.2% of efficiency with the output power of 24.4dBm with 840MHz PA and 93.5% of efficiency with 22.4dBm from the 2.4GHz. For the dual-band class-F PA, the harmonic controlling circuit with ideal SPDT switch was suggested. The length of transmission line is variable by a SPDT switch. As a results, the operation in 840MHz showed the peak efficiency of 60.5% with 23.5dBm, while in 2.4GHz mode the efficiency was 50.9% with the output power of 19.62dBm. Besides, it is shown that the harmonic controller of class-F above 2Ghz could be implemented on the low cost FR-4 substrate.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the filtration efficiencies and pressure drops of five commercial cloth masks (4 plate type, 1 cup type) in comparison to the performance of a class 1 disposable respirator (reference respirator). A further objective was to evaluate the effects of the number of layers and wash treatment independently on filtration efficiencies and pressure drops. Methods: Polydisperse NaCl aerosols were generated in an aerosol chamber and their concentrations were measured by an optical particle counter (OPC) in the size range of $0.3{\sim}10{\mu}m$ (five channels). Results: The filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks and the reference respirator were D: 9.5%, C: 18.5%, E: 23.6%, A: 28.5%, B: 29.7% and R: 91.1%, respectively, and the pressure drops through them were C, D: 0.8 Pa, E: 1.7 Pa, B: 6.4 Pa, A: 42.7 Pa and R: 19.3 Pa, respectively. The filtration efficiencies of the cloth masks and reference respirator were below the class 1 respirator criterion (${\geq}94.0%$) of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The pressure drops satisfied the class 1 respirator criterion (${\leq}70Pa$) of MOEL and MFDS. When the cloth masks were folded into two and four layers, the filtration efficiencies of cloth masks A, B, C, D (plate type) increased 1.7-4.6 times, and 2.3-6.8 times, respectively, compared to the efficiencies of the same products in a single layer. Pressure drops increased as the number of layers was increased. The filtration efficiency of cloth mask E with a liner was 1.3 times higher than that of the same mask without a liner, and the pressure drop was lower in the no-liner configuration. After a single washing, the filtration efficiencies of all the cloth mask products decreased 1.04-4.0 times compared to those of the same products intact. For the cloth masks C and E, their filtration efficiencies were significantly decreased after washing (p<0.05). The pressure drops of all cloth masks were 1.2-2.0 times lower after washing. Conclusions: The filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks were below 30% and did not improve greatly by increasing the number of layers. After a single washing, their performances decreased. Considering the above and other issues identified with cloth masks, such as poor fit and stretched fibers through use, people should not expect protection against particulate matters from the cloth masks on the market.

  • Various Class-E CMOS power amplifiers for GSM applications are presented. A stage-convertible transformer for a dual mode power amplifier is proposed to increase efficiency in the low-output power region. An integrated passive device(IPD) process is used to reduce combiner losses. A split secondary 1:2 transformer with IPD process is designed to obtain efficient and symmetric power combining. A quasi-four-pair structure of CMOS PA is also proposed to overcome the complexities of power combining.

  • This paper depicts the design, implementation and analysis of efficient resonant based wireless power transfer (WPT) technique using three magnetic coupled coils. This work is suitable for mid ranged device due to small form factor while minimizing the loading effect. A multi turned loop size resonator is exploited for both the transmitter and receiver for longer distance. In this paper, class-E power amplifier (class-E PA) is introduced with an optimum power tracking mechanism of WPT system to enhance the power capability at mid-range with a flat gain. A robust method of finding optimum distance is derived with an experimental analysis of the designed system. In this method, the load sensitive issue of WPT is resolved by tuning coupling coefficient at considerable distances. Our designed PA with a drain efficiency of 77.8% for a maximum output of 5W is used with adopted tuning technique that improves the overall WPT system performance by 3 dB at various operating points.

  • A CMOS band-pass delta-sigma modulator(BPDSM) and cascode class-E power amplifier have been developed CMOS for Class-S power amplifier applications. The BPDSM is operating at 1-GHz sampling frequency, which converts a 250-MHz sinusoidal signal to a pulse-width modulated digital signal without the quantization noise. The BPDSM shows a 25-dB SQNR(Signal to Quantization Noise Ratio) and consumes a power of 24 mW at an 1.2-V supply voltage. The class-E power amplifier exhibits an 18.1 dBm of the maximum output power with a 25% drain efficiency at a 3.3-V supply voltage. The BPDSM and class-E PA were fabricated in the Dongbu's 110-nm CMOS process.

  • We have investigated operation of a 1:2:2 asymmetric 3-stage Doherty PA(Power Amplifier) and implemented using the Freescale's 4 W, 10 W PEP LDMOSFETS at 1 GHz. By employing the three peak efficiency characteristics, compared to the two peak N-way Doherty PA, the asymmetric 3-stage Doherty can overcome the serious efficiency degradation along the backed-off output power region and maximize the average efficiency for the modulation signal. To maximize the efficiency characteristic, the inverse class F PA has been designed as carrier and peaking amplifiers. Furthermore, to extract the proper load modulation operation, the adaptive gate bias control signal has been applied to the two peaking PAs based on the envelope tracking technique. For the 802.16e Mobile WiMAX(World Interoperability for Microwave Access) signal with 8.5 dB PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio), the proposed Doherty PA has shown 55.46 % of high efficiency at an average output power of 36.85 dBm while maintaining the -37.23 dB of excellent RCE(Relative Constellation Error) characteristic. This is the first time demonstration of applying the saturated PA and adaptive gate bias control technique to the asymmetric 3-stage Doherty PA for the highly efficient transmitter of the base-station application.
