In order to understand the effect of introduction of oyster rack culture on natural short-necked clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, stock, we investigated the status of natural clam stock prior to introduction of oyster rack culture at Yeongheung Coast of Wando Island. The growth equation of the clam was estimated as: $L_t=61.46{\cdot}(1-e^{-0.172(t+0.155)})$ from ring radius composition of shell. Instantaneous coefficient of total mortality and natural mortality were calculated as: 2.4087/year and 0.478/year, respectively. The age at first capture was estimated to be 2.55 year. The total biomass was estimated to 3.23 ton in the bed (0.8 ha). Applied by these parameters, the annual recruit biomass and the current yield per recruit (Y/R) was corresponded to $114.7individuals/m^2$ and $92.0g/m^2$, respectively. Maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated 0.77 ton/year which was close to annual catches, 0.74 ton/year, in the area.

Although mud shrimp (Upogebia Major) provides benefits on the tidal flat ecosystem, it is causing the mass mortality of Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) and large economic loss to the aquaculture farmer due to spreading in the entire coastal clam farm area of the West Sea of Korea. In this study, a mud shrimp blocking box for cultivating clam was tested to prevent the mud shrimp from invading the habitat of the clam. To determine the effect of the blocking box, the growth characteristics of the clams under various culture conditions were investigated. The shell length, total weight, condition index, the presence of mud shrimp in the box, and the soil decay in the box were examined according to whether the clams were raised in the box or in natural state, whether the box is covered with a net or not and the gap size of the box. As a result, no significant differences in shell length, total weight, and condition index were found between the clam grown in the box and the natural state (P>0.05) without any evidence of invading of mud shrimp to the box. In addition, the soil inside the box was in good condition, not decayed. Therefore, using the mud shrimp blocking box, mud shrimp can be prevented from propagating to the habitat of the clam, thereby contributing to the normal production of the clam and thus to restoring the clam farming.

Oxygen consumption by the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum (Bivalvia: Veneridae) maintained in a culture tank for 7-10 weeks was measured with an automatic intermittent-flow-respirometer (AIFR). There was evidence for an endogenous tidal rhythm of 12.4 h in oxygen consumption, at irregular intervals of between about 7 and 18 hours during experiments of between 22 h 5 min and 70 h 32 min (duration) recording for fasting animals in constant darkness at constant temperatures in the absence of tidal rhythms.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of shaking stress in the hemolymph of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum by quantification of nitric oxide (NO) levels. The clams were divided into 3 groups as follows: clams placed in a plain container (control), clams injected with nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (NAME, an NO inhibitor), and clams in a container filled with nylon fiber at a density of $1kg/m^3$. Subsequently, each group was placed in sea water and shaken at 100 rpm for 6 h. The concentration of NO was quantified by using DAF assay and Griess assay. Both the assays showed that while shaking significantly increased the NO concentration, the NO inhibitor reduced the NO concentration in the hemolymph of the clams tested. In addition, the nylon fiber, which was used as a filler, effectively prevented the increase in NO concentration. This result suggests that measurement of NO concentration is a useful tool for evaluation of physiological stress in marine bivalves. In addition, it should be considered that a filler is necessary when dredge fishing or the suspended clam culture method is developed.

Changes in density of manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum to environment, catch and recruitment were studied in a few stations (Seonjae, Seongam, Hwangdo and Padori) in the West coast area of Korea from January, 2007 to December, 2009. Water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH in the study stations were 0.8 to $31.2^{\circ}C$, 22.1 to 33.7 psu, 5.0 to 12.0 mg/L and 7.39 to 8.99, respectively. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate were 0.016 to 1.281 mg/L, 0.004 to 0.093 mg/L and 0.016 to 1.617 mg/L, respectively. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 12.1 ${\mu}g/L$, respectively. Substrata were mainly composed of muddy sand and very poorly sorted in Padori, muddy sand and well sorted in Seonjae and Hwangdo, gravelly muddy sand and poorly sorted in Seongam. Density was high in Seonjae and Seongam, but low in Hwangdo and Padori. In clam culture station, in which spat was naturally produced without sowing seedlings, the living density was decreased by increasing of death and a catch of shellfish, and recruitment was changed. Also, Density affected condition factor and shape of clam. Condition factor was the highest in Hwangdo, in which temperature in the winter and chlorophyll-a were high, and was the lowest in Padori. In the shape of clam, the shape in Seongam was a elongated form, but in Padori was a stunted form.
We studied possibility of the sowing culture at the bottom after intermediate culture as a method for raising the survival of the Purplish Washington clam, Saxidomus purpuratus. The pearl net ($35cm(W){\times}35cm(B){\times}20cm(H)$) for S. prupuratus spat during the period of intermediate culture (hanging culture) from April to October in 2010. The pearl net (100 inds./net) was installed at two stations (Namhae and Pohang) being about 3-4 m in water depth. After hanging culture, S. prupuratus spat sowed in the bottom of the Gangjin Bay. The survivals (%) of intermediate culture of this species at Namhae station and Pohang station were 73% and 74%, respectively. Daily growth rate of mean shell length and mean weight in Namhae station were higher than those in Pohang station. After sowing at the bottom of the Gangjin Bay, its survival (%) showed 73.98% in January 2011. These results suggested the possibility of the intermediate culture as hanging culture for raising survival rate of S. prupuratus.
In a series of feeding experiments using the newly established the first laboratory strain of a temperate photosynthetic ciliate, Mesodinium rubrum MR-MAL01, direct evidence was obtained for ingestion of the cultured M. rubrum cells by the bivalves like the Korean scallop, Chlamys farreri and Manila clam. Ruditapes phil-ippinarum. Each experimental Korean scallop and Manila clam removed up to 9,590 and 23,200 cells min-1, respectively. Small particles almost identical to the ruptured cells of MR-MAL01 culture were observed in the gut of the experimental bivalves, although no intact M. rubrum cell was found. In a 28 days rearing experiment, Isoshrysis galbana (KMCC H-2), a microalga, supported better growth of small Manila clam spat (0.46 mm in shell length) than MR-MAL01 strain. For the large Manila clam spat (0.84 mm in shell length), however. MR-MAL01 strain was a better prey item. Mass culture methods for this photosynthetic marine ciliate may be developed for use as live feed in aquaculture of the spat and broodstock of bivalve and small-mouthed fish larvae.
The purpose of this study is to determine the appropriate substrate for larval settlement and spat growth in the purple clam, Saxidomus purpuratus in laboratory culture. Larvae were reared with 3 different types of sediments (mud, sand, and mixed) for 46 days in settlement experiment, and settled spats were further grown in 3 types of sediments for 36 weeks in growth experiment. The density of settled spats in muddy sediments was more than 2 times higher than those in mixed or sandy sediments. But, the average size of settled spats in muddy sediments was smaller than those in mixed or sandy sediments. After 36 weeks of growth period, growth rate decreased as shell length increased. When shell length was less than 2 mm, growth rate in mixed sediments was significantly higher than that in sandy sediments. When shell length was more than 2 mm, there was no significant difference in growth rate among different substrates. Sediment type affected growth rate only when the spats were relatively small (less than 2 mm). Muddy sediments seems better for larval settlement, while mixed sediments is best for spat growth. We suggest the laboratory procedure for enhancing seedling production of S. purpuratus.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of oil spill from the wastewater of Yeosu Refinery on water quality of hard clam culture beds in Taein-Ri, Kwang Yang Bay. Wastewater and oil spill may reach to the culture beds in 6-8 hours by tidal current movement. Water quality is nearly normal as unpolluted sea water except the concentration of n-hexane extractive chemicals which shows higher than unpolluted sea water in period of September to October in 1973. It may be caused by wastewater of Yeosu Refinery.
For the culture the population growth, shell length and spawning seasons of Gomphina veneriformis, and its environmental factors, were investigated at the Jeju coastal regions. from Feburuary, 1975 to March, 1976. The soil movements of the tidal flats where the clams inhabited were relatively rapid during the strong tidal actions. The rate of population growth were rapid from April to September, then became obsure. The relative growth equations of the shell height (SH) and the shell breadth (SB) against the shell length (SL) of the clams were as follows: Changhung : SH=0.751 SL + 0.685, SB=0.448 SL-0.630 Pyoson : SH-0.775 SL - 0.115, SB=0.464 SL-1.008 Hwhason : SH=0.794 SL - 0.923, SB=0.485 SL-1.155 Kwhagzee : SH=0.771 SL - 0.644, SB=0.455 SL-1.049 The meat weight increases of the clams were continued from March to late June, then it decreased sharply up to late August. The spawning of the clams seems to be late from June to Spetember in the regions studied.
