Contribution of local materials and the recycling of slate in the constitution of hydraulic concrete pavements

  • The main objective of this article is to highlight the progress made in the development of new materials that have been gradually used by humans until today. Of course, this progress must be associated with other parameters in order to guarantee sustainable development. For this, today, it has become urgent to reduce the consumption of cement by resorting to its partial or total replacement by other similar materials in order to reduce CO2 emissions in our environment. This should certainly help to develop greener building materials. In this study, it was decided to proceed with the partial or total replacement of Portland cement type CEM II/B-L-42.5N by slate and lime that had not undergone any previous transformation. The results obtained revealed that the mortar whose substitution compared to the replacement of cement (100%) cement and sand (0/4) confers better kinetics than those of the series composed of(100%) cement and fraction rubble (0/1).

  • In recent years there has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering research where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns in the field of construction and industrial waste reusing in civil works. Many of these projects involve some investigation on the characteristics of geotechnical and environmental properties. In this study, investigation and test on the characteristics of demolished waste concrete was carried out to detect the physical, mechanical, and environmental properties for reusing as embankment and backfill materials in civil works.

Impact Assessment of Remodeling Works on Indoor Air Quality in a University Library Building (대학 도서관 건물 리모델링에 따른 실내공기질 영향 평가)

  • Recently, there have been a large number of remodeling (or renovation) works in old buildings in urban areas. Compared to new buildings, environmental risk might be more significant in such buildings where remodeling works are going on, since some parts of the building may still be in service for people. This study was carried out to investigate the impacts of remodeling works on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of a large building (a 22 stories university library). Indoor air monitoring was conducted during and after the remodeling works every two weeks for a one year period, and target compounds included BTEX, styrene, TVOC, carbonyl compounds such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. $CO,\;CO_2,\;PM_{10}$, and $PM_{2.5}$. Overall, the IAQ appeared to be recovered within two months after the remodeling works. However, in some places, concentrations of formaldehyde, toluene, xylene. and ethylbenzene showed higher levels even after works than those during the works. The results indicate that painting, glues and office furnitures are major sources of aromatic VOCs and formaldehyde. Therefore, in order to decrease the concentrations of toxic VOCs, the use of environmental-friendly building materials is strongly recommended during the remodeling works. In addition, IAQ control and management scheme (for example, baking the inside of the building) should be taken into consideration before reopening the buildings.

  • This thesis aims to investigate the characteristics of the civil costume in Netherlands women and the way how the civil culture was reflected on these by analyzing the women's costume depicted in the works of the Johannes Vermeer regarded as the representative painter of Netherlands in 17th century. The method of study was to select 24 pieces of Vermeer's works among the 30 pieces, and were analyzed in detail. These were approved to be common civil costumes by researching the works of other painters in that era on the other hand. The result shows that the civil costume of Netherlands women from 1653 until 1675 was in the simple form of two pieces dress, and minimal decorations with simple hair style and headdress would take the constitution of the frugality, chastity and practicality as the mainstream, along with using the red, yellow and blue as the primary three colors on to the costumes. These characteristics might be ascribed to the Netherlands civil culture influenced by the Calvinism that emphasized the frugality and chastity, denouncing the luxury with supporting the religion and morality. This trend was also noted in the men's costume, giving evidence of the intimate relationship between the costume, religion and civil culture. This thesis might be a help to elucidate the relationship between the costume and cultural society, and be a affordable tools to study the contemporary costume.

A Study on Automated Quantity Take-off Methods of Earth Works in Road Design using 3D Design Concept (3차원 설계를 통한 도로설계단계의 토공 자동물량 산정 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the interests in three-dimensional design and BIM(Building Information Modeling) are increasing in civil engineering sector and the researches about three-dimensional design and quantity take-off methods for civil engineering structures have been conducted. However, these studies are just carried out the 3D design and quantity calculation of civil structures on the road or railway such as bridges and tunnels. The study on the quantity take-off methods and the evaluation of calculated results on the earth works should be performed in more detail. Based on these backgrounds in mind, the study was conducted the three-dimensional road design and evaluated the quantity take-off results on the earth works using 3D calculation method(average end area method, prismoidal method and composit method). The calculated quantity from composit method showed about 5% error of measuring efficiency than the average end area method, and when reporting the quantity calculation of earth works, it is necessary to specify the calculation method using quantity take-off of earth works.

  • In order to seek a efficiency of site cooperation and slope stabilization in a rock sloping work, it would rather take into consideration, in its importance, a concurrent performance of civil works and landscaping works than give any part a special priority. It can enable us to achieve an expanded scope of landscaping works and improvement of slope scenery via this sort of cooperation. However, this can not be achieved without assurance on the slope stabilization and scenic view of the project owner, and further via this cooperation, environmentally familiar works can be performed, becoming natural environment and minimizing damages on surrounding scenery and environment. It is foreseeable that improvement of functions of civil equipment, introduction of technology and development of landscaping materials can facilitate an improvement in the betterment of slope scenery. Landscaping related parties need to enhance their understanding of rock sloping and scenic view based on knowledge on the fundermental understanding of slope stabilization and on the base rock characteristics.

Analytical and finite element method for the bending analysis of the thick porous functionally graded sandwich plate including thickness stretching effect

  • This work presents a comparison between analytical and finite element analysis for bending of porous sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) plates. The plate is rectangular and simply supported under static sinusoidal loading. Material properties of FGM are assumed to vary continuously across the face sheets thickness according to a power-law function in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents while the core is homogeneous. Four types of porosity are considered. A refined higher-order shear with normal deformation theory is used. The number of unknowns in this theory is five, as against six or more in other shear and normal deformation theories. This theory assumes the nonlinear variation of transverse shear stresses and satisfies its nullity in the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without the use of a shear correction factor. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived from the virtual work principle. The Navier approach is used to solve equilibrium equations. The constitutive law of the porous FGM sandwich plate is implemented for a 3D finite element through a subroutine in FORTRAN (UMAT) in Abaqus software. Results show good agreement between the finite element model and the analytical method for some results, but the analytical method keeps giving symmetric results even with the thickness stretching effect and load applied to the top surface of the sandwich.

Understanding of procedural flow of overseas civil design works in developing countries under EDCF loans (EDCF차관(借款) 하의 개발도상국의 해외토목 설계 절차의 이해)

  • While performing the overseas projects in developing countries under EDCF loans with Korean civil design engineers as a project manager, I often used to find out and realize that lots of Korean engineers are not fully aware of what EDCF means and how EDCF funded projects are being implemented in developing countries. This implies that in the past, they have been concentrating on domestic projects only, not to mention have the rare opportunities to work in overseas projects. For these reasons, no wonder they neither pay a careful attention to the unfamiliar terms nor intend to try to realize them, even though such terms are fundamentals and important in overseas design works. With 'something will make it do'-like-attitude in our mind on site, nothing helps us at all. To help those who would like to understand and participate in overseas civil design works in developing countries under EDCF loans either as participants or as a future project manager, I introduce what EDCF means and how the procedure under these loans is being carried out, and they are briefly described herein this paper.
