  • The coupled model (SMART) of dynamic meteorology model and particle dispersion model was developed. The numerical experiment on the relationship between change of land use and diffusion behavior in complex terrain was carried out using this model. It tried to investigate the change of particle diffusion behavior and local weather under the condition in which land-land breeze and sea breeze and mountain breeze intermingled. The numerical experiment results are as follows; 1) The more complicated local circulation field of the interaction of sea breeze, mountain breeze and Land -land breeze is formed. Then, the region circulation in which the urbanization is specific by location of the region is strengthened and is weakened. 2) Though in the region with dominant sea breeze, Land-land breeze does not appear directly, the progress of the sea wind to the inland is affected. 3) In the prediction of the air diffusion, emission high quality and accurate information of the emission site are important. That is to say, the dispersion predicting result which emission high quality and small error of the site perfectly vary for Land - land breeze in the effect may be brought about.

  • Most underwater acoustic arrays for low frequency operation are deployed vertically, but a mid-range frequency horizontal array system is being developed by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). The horizontal array platform is deployed underwater and kept in place by weather vaning mooring. This is essential because it is nearly impossible to keep a submerged body at a given position in the water without any external force. Hence, the horizontal array platform can maintain the desired position in the presence of a weak tidal current. The objective of this study is to design an underwater platform that can maintain its horizontal position in a weak current. First, the authors investigated various virtual models, selected one of the models, and performed a small model test of the selected model at a basin. We calculated the external forces associated with the 2D motion, and then we conducted a large basin test followed by a circulation water channel test for the manufactured array platform. The results of the simplified 2D motion calculation essentially matched the results of the underwater test.

  • This paper presents the construction results and design of the UNIST Reactor Innovation platform for small modular reactors as a versatile testbed for exploring innovative technologies. The platform uses simulant fluids to simulate the thermal-hydraulic behavior of a reference small modular reactor design, allowing for cost-effective design modifications. Scaling analysis results for single and two-phase natural circulation flows are outlined based on the three-level scaling methodology. The platform's capability to simulate natural circulation behavior was validated through performance calculations using the 1-D system thermal-hydraulic code-based calculation. The strategies for evaluating cutting-edge technologies, such as the integration of a solid oxide electrolysis cell for hydrogen production into a small modular reactor, are presented. To overcome experimental limitations, the hardware-in-the-loop technique is proposed as an alternative, enabling real-time simulation of physical phenomena that cannot be implemented within the experimental facility's hardware. Overall, the proposed versatile innovation platform is expected to provide valuable insights for advancing research in the field of small modular reactors and nuclear-based hydrogen production.

  • Machine tools usually consume more energy in cooling systems than in spindle motors. This is largely because circulation pumps in the cooling systems are continuously powered to measure the temperature of spindle motors. In this paper, energy saving algorithms are proposed, which modify this behavior of the circulation pumps in such a way that the circulation pumps run only when it is likely that the information on the temperature is critical to bang-bang control of compressors in cooling systems. A mathematical model is established that explains heat transfer phenomena near the spindle motors. The power consumptions are measured for individual components in a machine tool, and the parameters that appear in the mathematical model are estimated. Computer simulations are performed with the estimated parameters, and the results are compared with the experimental ones. It turns out that a large amount of energy can be saved by using the proposed method.

  • A numerical and experimental investigation was carried out on the single-phase natural circulation system. This study is concerned with the multiloop system which is relevant to the primary system of the pressurized water reactor. For numerical analysis, five time-dependent governing equations were derived using the one-dimensional lumped parameter model. These equations were discretized by the space-time integration technique, and a simplified computer program, SIMFARS, was developed to solve those discretized equations. Experiments were performed for two purposes-one is to validate the developed code, and the other is to understand the qualitative behavior of the natural circulation loop. Comparison of the computational results with experiments, and several experimental and numerical results are presented in this article.

  • The piston slap phenomenon occurs when the piston collides with the internal wall of the cylinder. Impact force caused by piston slap is one of the major mechanical noise sources in reciprocating compressors. In response to public demand, strict regulations are increasingly being imposed on the allowable noise level which is caused mostly by household electric appliances. In this paper, forces acting on piston by considering the dynamic behavior of suction and discharge valves are analytically calculated and the piston slap caused by the piston secondary motion is investigated by the finite element method.

  • The variations of gas hold-up, overall volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficients and liquid circulation velocity in an internal loop reactor were investigated to manifest scale-up effect. The relationship between superficial gas velocity and gas hold-up were found as Ugr = 0.045 $\varepsilon$r in the pilot-scale and Ugr = 0.056 $\varepsilon$r in the bench-scale reactor. The overall volumetric oxygen mass tractsfer coefficient, KLa was slightly increased in the pilot-scale than in the bench-scale reactor. Flow regime was changed from the bubble flow to the churn-turbulent flow when the superficial gas velocity reached to 3.5 - 4 cm/sec in the pilot-scale.

  • The CHF phenomenon has been investigated for water flow under forced and natural circulation modes with vertical round tubes at low pressure and low flow condition. Experiments have been performed by using three different test sections for mass fluxes below 400 kg/㎡s under near atmospheric pressure. The experimental data for forced and natural circulation are compared with each other. To predict the flow rate at the two-phase region our test condition has been analyzed by RELAP5/MOD3 because the local two-phase condition inside the stainless steel tube cannot be directly measured. To predict the CHF with accuracy we have to consider the parameters at the single-phase region as well as the flow behavior at the two-phase region.

  • For describing the bipolar packed-bed electrode cell filled with graphite pellete electrode, the application of the model of equivalent circuit was studied. The ratio between the Faradaic current through bipolar electrodes and the applied current was dependent on the resistance coefficient, specific conductivity of electrolyte, and electrolyte circulation rate. The ratio of the Faradaic current through bipolar electrodes to the applied current increased with the applied current(or cell voltage), but decreased with the increase of electrolytic conductivity and circulation rate of the electrolyte.

  • A simplified fast-running system code is developed to simulate loop transients such as pump coastdown, loop failures and natural circulation. Special emphasis is put on the numerical investigation of the natural circulation system with multiloop. For this purpose, 5 governing equations are derived, and they are discretized by the space-time integration technique. The developed computer program is applied to three sample problems; transition from 2-loop to 1-loop operation, transition from 1-loop to 2-loop operation, and the transient behavior with decay power in the case of 2-loop operation.
