In this paper, we present the design and fabrication of a new circularly polarized circular patch antenna. The antenna is realized using a plastic foam sheet, a Teflon substrate and a metal-coated film. The radiating element is a circular patch proximity-fed by a wide microstrip line. Two thins slots are introduced on the circular patch to obtain a circular polarized radiation. The antenna is optimized using a commercial software. The antenna has 18% impedance bandwidth, 4% axial-ratio band width and 9.12dBi gain.

We proposed an optical encryption system using circular polarization based on interferometer. The phase modulated input image, represented as orthogonal linearly polarized states respectively, is encrypted into circularly polarized states using polarization modulated masks. In the decryption we use the inverse matrix of polarization modulation mask and can recover the original polarization states.

In this paper, in order to suggest an optimal polarization diversity composition method in indoor radio wave propagation environments, the variation of the cross polarization discrimination(XPD) was theoretically analyzed by a computer simulation and compared to the actual measured data. From the results, it can be seen that the cross polarization discrimination of the case, a circularly polarized antenna was used at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches were used at receiving end (CV-CH), is lower than that of the case, horizontal polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the horizontal and vertical polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(HH-HV), and that of the case, vertical polarized antenna at the transmitting end as well as the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches at the receiving end(VV-VH). In this paper, to get more effective CV-CH polarization diversity composition, the amount of cross polarization discrimination values at the signals received by horizontal polarized antenna is compensated and the polarization diversity effect through the cumulative probability distribution is estimated. From the evaluation results, it was found that the polarization diversity effect was better at the compensated case than at the uncompensated case. On the other hand, it can be known that the polarization diversity effect is getting better as the cross polarization discrimination values are getting lower, and also be known that the effect can be improved if a transmitting antenna is composed of the ellipse polarized antenna by adjusting the axial ratio of the circularly polarized antenna and, a receiving antenna is made up of the vertical and horizontal polarized antenna branches.

In this paper, we present a circularly polarized (CP) composite cavity-backed crossed dipole antenna for global positioning system (GPS) applications. We produce the CP radiation by crossing two dipoles through a $90^{\circ}$ phase delay line of a vacant-quarter printed ring, which also has a broadband impedance matching characteristic. Two techniques, insertion of meander lines in the dipole arm and arrowhead-shaped trace at its end, are employed to reduce the sizes of the primary radiation element. The compact radiator is backed by a cavity reflector to achieve a wide CP radiation beamwidth. The proposed antenna exhibits a measured bandwidth of 1.450~1.656 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) < 2 and 1.555~1.605 GHz for AR < 3-dB. At 1.575 GHz, the antenna has a gain of 7 dBic, a frontto-back ratio of 27 dB, AR of 1.18 dB, and 3-dB AR beamwidths of $130^{\circ}$ and $132^{\circ}$ in the x-z and y-z planes, respectively.

This study has designed a circular polarization antenna for UHF bandwidth RFID reader. As a result of performance test of the antenna designed it is found that return loss (S11) is about -45.529dB at 914MHz, which is relatively small, and antenna gain is about 6.09dBi. It has also been confirmed that $50{\Omega}$ impedance matching is about $50.48{$\Omega}$ and it can be applied to every RFID reader. Therefore, the antenna is designed to have higher gain of circular polarization by improving reception, which is one of the most important parameters of RFID reader and is expected to be extensively used to recognize multi-tag in the distance.

In this paper, a compact patch antenna with four T-slits fed by crossed aperture coupling is proposed for miniaturized Portable GPS handsets. The mechanism for compact size antenna is investigated with the behavior of the currents on the radiating patch. The equivalent surface current path due to the slits is lengthened, reducing the resonant frequency at a fixed patch size. The results of embedded T-slits for compact antenna size show that the resonant frequency is significantly lowered from 2.545GHz to 1.575GHz, corresponding to a 44.65% antenna size reduction compared to reference design. Experimental results show that good CP radiation patterns are obtained and impedance bandwidth (VSWR $\leq$ 2), 3dB axial ratio are about 21MHz, 19MHz at the center resonant frequency, respectively.
The conditions under which a composite retarder consisting of two different retardation plates can be operated as a tunable quarter-wave plate are derived. The explicit expressions for the azimuthal angle of a linear polarizer and those of two retardation plates to generate circularly polarized light are presented as a function of retardation angles. Those expressions for the azimuthal angles derived using the Jones matrix formalism are verified as identical to the expressions derived from the analysis of the trajectory on a Poincar$\acute{e}$ sphere. A couple of examples are presented for generating circularly polarized light when two identical retardation plates are used.

This paper describes composite cavity-backed crossed scythe-shaped dipoles with wide-beam circularly polarized (CP) radiation for use in Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Each branch of the dipole arm contains a meander line, with the end shaped like a scythe to achieve a significant reduction in the size of the radiator. For dual-band operation, each dipole arm is divided into two branches of different lengths. The dipoles are crossed through a $90^{\circ}$ phase delay line of a vacant-quarter printed ring to achieve CP radiation. The crossed dipoles are incorporated with a cavity-backed reflector to make the CP radiation unidirectional and to improve the CP radiation beamwidth. The proposed antennas have broad impedance matching and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths, as well as right-hand CP radiation with a wide-beamwidth and high front-to-back ratio.

This paper introduces a technique to obtain the broadband characteristics of circularly polarized antennas using an L-shaped probe. A waveguide antenna is suitable for obtaining high gain and handling convenience in some applications; however, the asymmetrical structure of the L-shaped probe results in cross-polarization and frequency dependence on the field distribution of higher-order modes (HOM). In addition to the basic characteristics of a waveguide antenna with an L-shaped probe, the author discusses some techniques to reduce the HOM and cross-polarization. As a result, the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) is obtained with the fundamental mode even when the frequency is expanded to the region for HOM of TM. This reduction is mainly due to the cutoff structure to the TM mode around the short wall of the waveguide. Furthermore, some aperture modification techniques can reduce the cross-polarization in a wide range of angles in the radiation pattern. Such techniques and their mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The obtained performance shows that the proposed antennas have a wide range of angles of 3-dB AR in the radiation pattern, broadband characteristics in impedance and AR, and low variation in group velocity.

A wideband circularly polarized (CP) antenna with a single feed is proposed for use in global navigation satellite systems. Its primary radiation elements are composed of two orthogonal bowtie dipoles, which are equipped with double-printed vacant-quarter rings to allow direct matching of the antenna to a single $50-{\Omega}$ coaxial line and to produce CP radiation. The crossed bowtie dipole is appropriately incorporated with a planar metallic reflector to produce the desired unidirectional radiation pattern as well as to achieve a wideband characteristic in terms of impedance matching and axial ratio (AR) bandwidths. The designed antenna was fabricated and measured. The prototype antenna with an overall 1.2-GHz frequency size of $0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.25{\lambda}_o$ produced a measured ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}$<-10 dB bandwidth of 1.05-1.79 GHz and a measured 3-dB AR bandwidth of 1.12-1.64 GHz. It also showed right-hand CP radiation with a small gain variation (${\pm}0.3dB$) and high radiation efficiency (>93%) over the operational bandwidth.
