  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of twin tunnels constructed in anisotropic rocks with $30^{\circ}$ inclined bedding planes under the condition of lateral pressure ratio, 2. Five types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths and shapes of tunnel sections were experimented, where both crack initiating pressures and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. The models with shallower pillar width showed shear failure of pillar according to the existing bedding planes and they were cracked under lower pressure than the models with thicker pillar width. In order to find the effect of tunnel sectional shape on stability, the models with four centered arch section, circular section and semi-circular arch section were experimented. As results of the comparison of the crack initiating pressures and the deformation behaviors around tunnels, the semi-circular arched tunnel model was the most unstable whereas the circular tunnel model was the most stable among them. Furthermore, the results of FLAC analysis were qualitatively coincident with the experimental results.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) structures with low-strength RC columns are rampant in several countries, especially those constructed during the early 1960s and 1970s. The weakness of these structures due to overloading or some natural disasters such as earthquakes and building age effects are some of the main reasons to collapse, particularly with the scarcity of data on the impact of aspect ratio and corner radius on the confinement effectiveness. Hence, it is crucial to investigate if these columns (with different aspect ratios) can be made safe by strengthening them with carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets. Therefore, experimental and numerical studies of CFRP-strengthened low-strength reinforced concrete short rectangular, square, and circular columns were studied. In this investigation, a total of 6 columns divided into three sets were evaluated. The first set had two circular cross-sectional columns, the second set had two square cross-section columns, and the third set has two rectangular cross-section columns. Furthermore, FEM validation has been conducted for some of the experimental results obtained from the literature. The experimental results revealed that the confinement equations for RC columns as per both CSA and ACI codes could give incorrect results for low-strength concrete. The control specimen (unstrengthened ones) displayed that both ACI and CSA equations overestimate the ultimate strength of low-strength RC columns by order of extent. For strengthened columns with CFRP, the code equations of CSA and ACI code overestimate the maximum strength by around 6 to 13% and 23 to 29%, respectively, depending on the cross-section of the column (i.e., square, rectangular, or circular). Results of finite element models (FEMs) showed that increasing the layer number of new commonly CFRP type (B) from one to 3 for circular columns can increase the column's ultimate loads by around eight times compared to unjacketed columns. However, in the case of strengthened square and rectangular columns with CFRP, the increase of the ultimate loads of columns can reach up to six times and two times, respectively.

  • With the increase in the demand for high-rise buildings, the use of high-strength steel has likewise increased. Thus, it has become more necessary to study the resistance force of the high-strength hollow structural section (HSS) joint of 600MPa. Additionally, the current design equation in Korea limits maximum yield stress at 360MPa in the case of HSS. In other words, since the current specification does not apply to HSS of 600MPa, this study aims to investigate the applicability of design equations as well as examine the behavior of the connection through the experiment and finite element analysis (FEA) of the plate-tube connection of 600MPa. In particular, this paper presents the behavior of joints with the gusset plates welded in the longitudinal direction of the circular hollow section (CHS) when the joints are subjected to lateral force. Comparing design equations with the results of FEA and the test, existing design equations are underestimated to be 56~79% in the case of high-strength materials.

  • This study is a series of experimental investigations of the buckling strengths of eccentrically compressed, cold-formed, stainless-steel, circular, hollow-section beam columns. The principal parameters that were used in this study were the slenderness ratios (Lk/r = 30, 50, 70) and the magnitude of eccentricity e(one way: 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100mm: the other way: 0, 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50mm) on the asymmetrical end-moment of a double curvature. The objectives of the study were to obtain the maximum loads through an experiment and to compare the experimental behaviors with the analysis results. The ultimate buckling strength of the square section members were evaluated using a numerical method, in accordance with the bending moment-axial force(M-P) interaction curves. The behavior of each specimen was displayed in the form of the strength-displacement and moment-angle(M-$\theta$) relationship.

  • The bending phenomenon has been known to be occurred by the difference of velocity at the die exit. The difference of velocity at the die exit section can be obtained by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container. The difference of velocity at the die exit can be controlled by the two variables, the one of them is the different velocity of extrusion punch through the multi-hole container, the other is the difference of hole diameter of muliti-hole container. In this paper the difference of hole diameter is applied. So it can bend during extruding products because of the different amount of two billets when billets would be bonded in the porthole dies cavity. And the bending curvature can be controlled by the size of holes. The experiments with aluminum material for the curved tube product had been done for circular or rectangular curved tube section. The results of the experiments show that the curved tube product can be formed by the extru-bending process without the defects such as distortion of section and thickness change of wall of tube and folding and wrinkling. The curvature of product can be controlled by shape of cross section and the difference of billet diameters. And it is known that the bonding and extruding and bending process can be done simultaneously in the die cavity by the experiments that rectangular hollow curved tubes could be extruded by porthole dies with four different size billets made of aluminum material. And it shows that bending phenomenon can happen during extruding with for different billets from the analysis by DEFORM-3D.

  • The use of Concrete filled circular hollow steel section (CFCHS) members in bridge design is a relatively new concept. The most important part of the design and durability of such structures is the design and the construction of the joints. In the design of recently constructed steel-concrete composite bridges using CFCHS truss girders for the main load carrying structure, the fatigue verification of the tubular spatial truss joints was a main issue. Welded CFCHS joints are very sensitive to fatigue because the geometric discontinuities of the welds lead to a high stress concentration. New research done on the fatigue behaviour of such joints has focused on CFCHS N-joints, directly welded, with finite element analysis method. A commercial software, ABAQUS, is adopted to perform the finite element analysis on the N-joints. This paper is main focused on these topics, including hot spot stress.

  • In this paper, a circular dual mode horn with modified aperture is proposed to improve a E/H-plane radiation pattern symmetry of a conventional oversized circular dual mode horn. The proposed antenna consists of a feeding section, a mode generation section and a phase matching section which has aperture shape transition from circle to ellipse or rectangle to improve a E/H-plane radiation pattern symmetry. To compare the performances between the proposed antenna and the convenional circular dual mode horn, the conventional circular dual mode horn and the proposed circular dual mode horn with rectangular aperture are fabricated and researched at 15 GHz. The measured results show that the conventional circular dual mode horn has 3.394 dB difference while the proposed antenna has only 0.539 dB difference between E and H-plane radiation patterns within the -11 dB beamwidth($53^{\circ}$) which is required beamwidth of the feed horn for the maximum aperture efficiency where f/d ratio of reflector antenna is 1.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide mathematical knowledge for supporting the didactical knowledge on circular measure and radian in the high school curriculum. We show that circular measure related to arcs can be mathematically justified as an angular measure and radian is a well defined concept to be able to reconcile the values of trigonometric functions and ones of circular functions, which are real variable functions. Radian has two-fold intrinsic attributes of angular measure and arc measure on the unit circle, in particular, the latter property plays a very important role in simplifying the trigonometric derivatives. To improve students's low academic achievement in trigonometry section, the useful advantage and the background over the introduction of radian should be preferentially taught and recognized to students. We suggest some teaching plans to practice in the class of elementary and middle school for enhancing teachers' and students' understanding of radian.
