The concept of data warehousing was born in the 1970-80s at the same time when Wal-Mart's growing database gave birth to its need to view records in a more effective way. As the world's largest retail warehouse, Wal-Mart represents the world's largest data warehouse. A large portion of the discussionaround Wal-Mart's database management heretofore has only been process-centric, however, not its data per se. The study largely involves technical concepts around database and takes a deep look at Wal-Mart's chronicle of pre-implementation (preparation), implementation, and post-implementation (evaluation) of the data warehousing project. The highlight underlies how Wal-Mart acted against solving endless problems and was able to gear their data management to business contribution. By revisiting their data warehousing project case from a current point of view, we expect their lessons to be still available and applicable. With the renewed interest in (big) data and business intelligence, Wal-Mart's high respect for data and technology holds a lot more meaning than a couple of decades ago.
In index investing according to KOSPI, we estimate Value at Risk(VaR) from the extreme losses of the daily returns which are obtained from KOSPI. To this end, we apply Block Maxima(BM) model which is one of the useful models in the extreme value theory. We also estimate the extremal index to consider the dependency in the occurrence of extreme losses. From the back-testing based on the failure rate method, we can see that the model is adaptable for the VaR estimation. We also compare this model with the GARCH model which is commonly used for the VaR estimation. Back-testing says that there is no meaningful difference between the two models if we assume that the conditional returns follow the t-distribution. However, the estimated VaR based on GARCH model is sensitive to the extreme losses occurred near the epoch of estimation, while that on BM model is not. Thus, estimating the VaR based on GARCH model is preferred for the short-term prediction. However, for the long-term prediction, BM model is better.
There are many astronomical records of comets in Korean history books. We collected those of the comet that appeared in the winter of the year 1664. These records were written in Daily Reports of the Royal Observatory on Astronomical Events (星變測候單子), Final Reports of the Royal Observatory on An Astronomical Events (天變謄錄), the Daily Records of the Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty (承政院日記), and the Chronicle of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄). We used the Olbers' method for determination of preliminary orbit of the comet, and compared the result with the previous researches. In the Oblers' method the orbit is assumed to be parabolic (e=1). We obtained the following orbital elements: perifocal distance q=1.07\pm0.008AU, perifocal passage time $T=2329165.50\pm0.72$ days, argument of the perifocus $\omega=318^{\circ}.2\pm2^{\circ}.29$, longitude of ascending node $\Omega=85^{\circ}.23\pm2^{\circ}53(J1665)$(J1665), inclination $i=160^{\circ}.28\pm1^{|circ}.56$.
The Joseon had made maps of Japan with information that gained during the exchanges with Japan on the basis of the polio of maintaining amicable relations. The elaborate map of Japan similar to Haenggido was in Honilgangniyokdaekukdojido(Map of integrated lands and regions of historical countries and capitals, made in 1402, and more accurate map of Japan was found in Haedongjegukgi(Chronicle of the countries of the Eastern Sea, compiled by Sinsukju in 1471. These products were due to openness of foreign exchanges in 15th century. After 16th century, understanding of Japan based on China-centric view was intensified, as the confucianism of Chu-tzu planted its roots deeply in Joseon society as the social doctrine. These tendency were reflected in the map-making, accordingly many kinds of maps of Japan in the atlas were meager in contents and distorted in shorelines. Apart these currents, as comings and goings of official envoy became brisk, elaborated maps of Japan were imported and copied in the Joseon dynasty. Consequently these maps helped the elites of Joseon to raise understanding of Japan.

From the 1890s to the 1900s, Modern Japan investigated the sea of Korea (Joseon Dynasty) several times. The records of investigation result were "Fishery Circumstances of Korean Sea"(1893), "Official Trip Report on Wonsan Area of Korea"(1895), "Nautical Publication of Korea"(1894), "Patrol Reports of Korea Fishery Association"(1898~1900), "Fishery Guide for Korean Sea"(1903) and "Chronicles of Korea Fisheries"(1908~1911). Although these surveys were conducted more than 100 years ago, they provide a glimpse into the fishing situation of Korea as well as the lives of residents in the coastal areas. In particular, Chronicles of Korean Fisheries is a vast collection of four volumes, and it has much to do with the history and culture of Korea, including marine products from the coastal waters, the population of coastal villages, the number of people engaged in fishing, and the number of fishing boats and nets. From the perspective of the development of fisheries studies, the modern classification of marine products after Linne has already been applied, and the classification of those days is quite different from that of the present classification, so it can be said to be an interesting data from the viewpoint of animal and plant taxonomy.
How are we approach the fourteenth chapter of Ulysses known as 'The Oxen of the Sun' in this globalized age of hyper-theorization? My paper argues that examining the wide reverberations set off by Derrida's comment in "Ulysses Gramophone"-"Everything has already happened to us with Ulysses"-in relation to the central textual theme of cosmopolitanism may provide a reading that not only pays due respect to the critical legacy of the early structuralist interpretations but equally takes into account the political sensibilities of our time. The neologism 'chaosmopolitanism,'in fact, serves as that very critical measure designed to bridge the gap separating the long tradition of Western Eurocentric discourse on cosmopolitanism on the one hand and the geopolitical background conditioning its discursive possibility, namely, the chaotic condition of international colonialism on the other, whose exemplary, and exemplarily creative, fusion bears none other name than Ulysses. But the idea of chaosmopolitanism gains its conceptual leverage on yet another, no less pivotal register, for, just as with Derrida's first-person plural pronoun, the trope leads us to reflect on our own situatedness in the East Asian region in light of Joyce's unabashedly universalist vision, whose over-arching textual purview nonetheless leaves the space called the Far East in the singular position of virtual exclusion. What does it then mean to enjoy Joyce's "chaffering allincluding most farraginous chronicle" in light of our East Asian perspective? To this second question, my inquiry turns to the dual theme of enjoyment and debt as they are problematized by Stephen Dedalus' telegram to Mulligan, which reads, "the sentimentalist is he who would enjoy without incurring the immense debtorship for a thing done." Itself a quotation from George Meredith's novel The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, the transcribed message invites us to reconsider the scrupulous endeavor underwriting Joyce's signatory gusto, but at the same time forcing us to confront and reassess our own debt to the problematic heritage known as Western literature or, to borrow Derrida's expression, Abrahamic language.
Mainland China is under different conditions both socially and politically than other countries, so there is a lack of practical researches on cartoon characters. With a profound interest, the researcher has selected a character that is realistic and loved by many Chinese. The subject of the study is "Shan Mao Series." Out of 16 seasons, the most famous one is the Chronicle of Shan Mao's Wander. I analyzed the character thoroughly, dealing with the beginning of the character, the process of character development, and a reality shown in the chronicle, etc. on chapter II, and the character's image component on chapter III. Chinese modern cartoons were affected by a situational anxiety because of foreign powers and war. Thus satire cartoons went in fads among the public. The epitome of a typical cartoon was the Shan Mao Series. From 1935, when the character was first created, to now it has eaten into Chinese people's hearts. It's because the story happens during a war period and it deals with a playful, humorous main character's life and these facts show the hidden side of the unfair social system. Most of readers prefer a smart, playful, righteous, and brave character. Shan means three and mao, hair in Chinese, so Shan Mao is a child who has three hair. The character is not just a simple cartoon character; it has developed into a national figure among many Chinese. The reason why the researcher has chosen the series created by Zhang Leping, the author of the cartoon, is because a good cartoon, good animation, and even good movie stimulate the feelings that we get from our surroundings. The character which is created in China seems very unique and bizarre but there is a sense of friendliness. Also its character image and scenes make people laugh and it has become a typical symbol of a modern cartoon in China.
In Seongju, Gyengsangbuk-do, the Placenta Chamber (胎室, Taesil) of 18 sons and a son of the crown prince of King Sejong(世宗大王) is located in one place. Taesil refers to the place where the umbilical cord and placenta, which are separated when the baby is born, are placed in a jar made of pottery and stone box and then buried on the ground. The placenta chamber in Seongju has the Buncheong ware (粉靑沙器) cover buried on the ground to protect the baby's placenta. These covers are all hemispherical, with a diameter of more the 20cm. The decorations were made using black and white inlaid techniques only on the outside. The Buncheong ware cover with this shape and pattern has been confirmed only in the placenta chamber in Seongju. This study targets 6 of the Buncheong ware cover whose owners were identified, when and where they were prepared, what the stylistic features and meanings are, and where it was produced. The results of the study are as follows. First, ss a result of reviewing the production background and procurement system of this bowl, it was inferred that it was sourced from Jangheunggo (長興庫) at the central government office, between 1436 and 1439, when the event to bury the placenta of royal members in the ground was the most active. Second, it analyzed the unique features of this cover, such as the shape, pattern, and baked traces. The shape and pattern were compared to the ritual objects contained in the Sejong Silok Oryeui (『世宗實錄』 「五禮」, Five Rites of King Sejong Chronicle) and the lid of the royal placenta jar made in the 15th and 16th centuries. Third, this study suggests that the baking method was based on the shape and location of the traces remaining outside the cover. Finally, the following data were used to estimate the production site: the relationship with the 'Jagiso (磁器所, ceramic workshop) registered in the Sejong Silok Jiriji (『世宗實錄』 「地理志」, Geographical Appendix of King Sejong Chronicle); various records of contribution and dedication about the Buncheong ware made here; and the Buncheong ware and related tools excavated from the kiln site in the area. The place where the Buncheong ware cover was produced is estimated to be the most likely production site for the kiln site in Chunghyo-dong Kiln Site, located in Jeolla-do province by synthesizing the data above.
Ginseng, also known as Insam, has solidified its status as one of the supreme drugs classified as life time expansion drug since ancient times and was used as a panacea based on its pharmaceutical effectiveness. The demand for ginseng rapidly increased as the demand for ginseng, which targeted only noble class people, expanded to other social class people. Accordingly, the wild ginseng supply reached its limit due to the extinction caused by indiscriminate harvesting and the difficulty of harvesting, and thus the ginseng supply method shifted to the cultivation of high-priced ginseng rather than complicated wild ginseng foraging. Although the timing of ginseng cultivation (also called gasam) in Korea has been studied, the research on the first cultivation area has not been reported yet. In this study, we critically reviewed Korea's first ginseng cultivation site by arranging data related to ginseng cultivation, and the historical data cited here include Joseon Wangjo Sillog (The Annals of Joseon Dynasty), Imwon Gyeongjeji (The Mid-19 Century Encyclopedia Koreana on Rural Living, Edible plants and Herb Volumes), Oju Yeonmun Jangjeon Sango (An Encyclopedic Writing during the Latter Half Period of the Joseon Dynasty), Junggyeongji (The Junggyeong Town Chronicle), Jeungbo Munheon Bigo (The largest encyclopedia of Joseon Dynasty), Insamsa (The Ginseng History) and etc. As a result of data assortment and critical review, the first ginseng plantation in the Joseon Dynasty resulted in the Yeongnam region, and in Yeongnam region, I have no choice but to conclude that it is Punggi-myeon (currently Punggi-eup, Yeongju-si, Gyeongbuk).

Since 1950s, the Korean housing market has continually experienced the chronicle lack of housing stock because of lower housing investment in comparison with a population explosion, prompt urbanization and rapid restructuring of family. The Korean housing market have thus been driven not by the pricing model by housing demand-supply chain but by the Korean housing policies focusing on the increase of housing supply and the living stability of the middle or low-income bracket. After all, repetitive economic vicious circle of housing price and the increase of unsold apartments aggravated the malfunction of the Korean housing market. Meanwhile, the Korean construction firms have exacerbated their profitability. Such terrible situations are mainly triggered by the Korean construction firms that weighed on the short-term profits and quick response of the government policy alterations rather than the prospect of housing market Therefore, this research focusing on the dynamics of housing market identified and classified the demand and supply elements that consist not only of housing system structures but also of the environmental elements that affect the structures. Based on the system thinking and traditional theory of consumer's choice, the interactions of these elements were constructed as a causal loop diagram that explains the mutual influences among housing subsystems with feedback loops. This paper describes and discusses about the causes of the dynamic changes in the Korean housing market. This study would help housing suppliers, including housing developers, construction firms, etc., to form a more comprehensive understanding on the fundamental issues that constitute the Korean housing market and thereby increasing their long term as well as minimizing the risk involved in the housing supply businesses.
