Chlorobenzenes (CBs) are ubiquitous hydrophobic chlorinated organic compounds in the environment. These compounds are used as de-ordants, solvents and pesticides, as well as byproducts of agro- or petro-chemical related manufacturing processes, such as PCBs and pentachlorophenol, or of biodegradation of lindane (Newhook and Meek, 1994). Unlike some organochlorine (OC) compounds, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and various pesticides, CBs are not banned from production or use in any country. (omitted)
Degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides by Alcaligenes aquamarinus has been studied and also degradation product of PCB-42 was investigated by TLC and GC. The less chlorinated members of PCBs such as Aroclor 1016 was degraded readily by the strain and rates of the microbial degradation of several organochlorine pesticides were found to decrease in the order of p,p'-DDT, r-BHC and Thiolix. Approximately 40 percent of PCB-42 was degraded when incubated with non-autoclaved soil for 25 days at $25^{\circ}C$. The yellow compound from PCB-42 was tentatively identified as p-chlorobenzoic acid.

An organophosphorus insecticide, chlorpyrifos, has been of a great concern due to persistence, toxicity and accumulation in soils and groundwaters. This study deals with degradation efficiency and dechlorination kinetics of chlorpyrifos by various types of zerovalent irons (ZVIs) for effective remediation of the soils contaminated with chlorinated pesticides. Chlorpyrifos degradation rate was increased with increasing ZVI treatment amount and reaction time. The degradation rate and dechlorination kinetics of chlorpyrifos increased in the order of mZVI > nZVI > cZVI in solutions and soils. Dechlorination number value of chlorpyrifos by cZVI, nZVI and mZVI treatment exhibited 1.08, 3.09 and 3.18, respectively. In soils, degradation efficiency and kinetics of chlorpyrifos significantly were affected by moisture content because of the limited contact between ZVIs and chlorpyrifos. These results suggest that nanosized and functionalized mZVI could be effectively applied to degradation of chlorinated pesticides in the soil and aqueous environments.
Peysistent oyganochlorine compounds (OCs) weve determined in sediments and bivalves from Gwangyang Bay. The concentrations of ∑PCB, ∑DDT, ∑HCH and ∑CHL in sediments were in the range of f 2.25∼11.4 ng g$\^$-1/, 0.16∼1.16 ng g$\^$-1/, nd∼0.51 ng g$\^$-1/, and 0.05∼0.79 ng g$\^$-1/, respectively. The overall OCs concentrations in sediments were below the effect range -median (ER-M) values toy benthic organisms suggested by NOAA (1991). Levels of PCB compounds a re relatively lower than other industrialized bays (Pusan Bay, Ulsan Bay, and Youngil Bay). OCs accumulated in bivalves were higher than those in sediments. In bivalves, the concentration ranges of ∑PCB, ∑DDT, ∑HCH and ∑CHL were 9.97∼31.7 ng g$\^$-1/, 7.54∼22.6 ng g$\^$-1/, 0.49∼2.0 ng g$\^$-1/, and 0.82∼7.32 ng g$\^$-1/, respectively. Relatively high PCB concentrations in both environmental matrices are found at the inner bay than the outer part, indicating that the sources of PCBs were located inside the bay. DDT compound showed relatively high concentrations in the vicinity of the mouth of river and urban area, whereas other organochlorine pesticides show homogeneous distributions over the bay. Homologue profile of PCB compounds shows that low-chlorinated congeners (especially, di-, tyi- and tetra-) are abundant in Gwangynng Bay, which is diferent from other areas in Korea.
Bacterial bioluminescence has been known to be a highly valuable reporter system for its potential application as an effective and simple environmental monitoring method for toxic compounds. In this short report, we constructed a streptomycetes-Escherichia coli shuttle vector-containing bioluminescence system and evaluated its potential application for toxic compounds monitoring. The luxAB biolurninescence genes from Vibrio harveyi were cloned into a streptornycetes-E. coli shuttle vector (named pESK004) and functionally expressed in Streptomyces lividans. The recombinant S. lividans containing pESK004 exhibited an optimal biolurninescence at the optical density ($OD_{600\;nm}$) of 0.4-0.5 and aldehyde concentration of 0.005%. When the recombinant bioluminescence streptomycetes was exposed to a toxic compound such as heavy metals, chlorinated phenols, or pesticides, the bioluminescence was decreased proportionally to the concentration of toxic compound in the assay mixture. The $EC_{50}$ (effective concentration to decrease 50% of the bioluminescence prior to exposure) values in the recombinant biolurninescence streptomycetes for mercury, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and malathion were measured at 2.2 ppm, 144.0 ppm, and 82.4 ppm, respectively. The degree of sensitivity and specificity pattern toward these toxic compounds characterized in this recombinant bioluminescence streptomycetes were unique when compared with previously reported bacterial bioluminescence systems, and this revealed that a recombinant bioluminescence streptomycetes might provide an alternative or complementary system for potential environmental monitoring.

The misuse of pesticides has resulted in environmental pollution, which directly or indirectly affects all life on earth. Chlorpyrifos is a chlorinated organophosphorus pesticide that is commonly used in agriculture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chlorpyrifos on the fertilization function of boar spermatozoa. Sperm samples from boars were subjected to varying concentrations of chlorpyrifos from 10 to 200 µM for two incubation periods, 30 min or 2 hrs. The boar spermatozoa were then evaluated for motility, motion kinematics, viability, acrosome integrity, chromatin stability, and generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). There was a significant percentage reduction in sperm motility and motion kinematic parameters after both incubation periods (p < 0.05). The proportion of viable spermatozoa decreased after incubation for 30 min and 2 hrs in a dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). A significantly lower percentage of normal acrosomes was observed in spermatozoa exposed to 200 µM chlorpyrifos over both incubation periods, compared to the controls. The damage to sperm DNA was significantly higher when the exposure time to chlorpyrifos was longer. There was a significant increase in the ROS levels in spermatozoa incubated with chlorpyrifos for 2 hrs (p < 0.05). From the results of the present study, it is concluded that direct exposure of boar spermatozoa to chlorpyrifos altered boar sperm characteristics, suggesting potential toxicity that may affect the male reproductive function.
The Stockholm Convention, which was adopted in Sweden in 2001 to protect human health and the environment, includes regulations for Persistent Organic Pollutant Rotors such as toxic and bioaccumulatives. Currently, there are 28 types of materials. This prohibits and limits the production, use, and manufacture of products. Korea is a member of the Convention, and it is necessary to prepare management and treatment plans to address the POP trends. Thus, we experimentally investigate whether the environmentally stable incineration is achieved when the sample is thermally treated using the Lab-scale (1 kg/hr). The target samples is pesticides in liquid phase and solid phase. In this study, organic chlorinated pesticides and their thermal characteristics were analyzed. We calculated the theoretical air volume based on the element analysis results. Because the interior of the reactor is small, more than 10 times of the air ratio was injected. The retention time was set to at least 4 seconds using a margin. The incineration temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. Thus, we experimentally investigated whether the environmentally stable incineration was achieved when the sample was thermally treated using the Lab-scale (1 kg/hr). We analyzed five types of exhaust gas; the 02 concentration was high, but the CO amount decreased. Complete combustion is difficult because of the small size of the furnace due to the nature of Lab-scale. The organic chlorine-containing pesticide had an average decomposition rate of 99.9935%. Considering the decomposition rates of organic chlorine-containing pesticide in this study, the incineration treatment at over 2 ton/hour, which is typical for a conventional incinerator, is possible. Considering the occurrence of dioxins and unintentional persistent organic pollutants, it can operate at more than $1,100^{\circ}C$.
Chlorophenoxy acids are one of the most useful classes of chlorinated herbicides. Specially 2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T were known to endocrine distruptors. In this study, these pesticides in water samples were extracted by liquid-liquid extration at acidic conditions and then derivatization of acidic group was carried out various esterifications using by CH$_3$I/Acetone -K$_2$CO$_3$, H$_2$SO$_4$/MeOH or TFAA/TFE. That result, Sensitivities of TFE derivatized 2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T are prior to the others. The recoveries of 2, 4-D and 2, 4, 5-T were 98% and 82% respectively using diethyl ether as an extracting solvent.

In August-September 2001, 15 samples of bottom sediments were collected in the inner, middle and open parts of Amursky Bay near Vladivostok, Russia, and barfin plaice Pleuronectes pinnifasciatus was sampled from the inner and the middle locations of the bay. In the sediments from all three sites elevated concentrations of several heavy metals, i.e. Zn ($102-115{\mu}/g$ dry weight), Ni $(70-73{\mu}g/g)$ and Cu $(27-35{\mu}g/g)$ were discovered. The contents of oil hydrocarbons were very close to or slightly higher than the maximal normal environmental background level, $100{\mu}g/g$ dry weight. The sediments contained negligible amounts of hexachlorocyclohexane, while DDT concentrations were quite high (1.7-16.3ng/g dry weight). Generally, there were no substantial differences in the pollution levels of the locations studied and our results resembled those reported for Amursky Bay in the 1990s. Surprisingly, in 2001 'fiesh' DDT comprised 70-85% of the total DDT content in sediment from all the locations studied. In fish liver total DDTs concentrations were 212.8 and 122.54 ng/g wet weight for the inner and the middle locations, respectively, and 'fresh' DDT comprised 35 and 64% of DDTs, respectively. These results provide evidence of recent input of DDT from an unknown source into the ecosystem of Amursky Bay. Histopathological changes revealed in the plaice liver (vacuolization of hepatocytes, coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes, inflammatory reaction, and necrosis of epithelial cells of bile ducts) are probably connected with an intensive metabolism of DDT in the fish organism. No histological and histomorphometric differences were found in the state of the interrenal tissue. Similar condition of the liver and the interrenal tissue in barfin plaice sampled from the inner and the middle locations of Amursky Bay may be explained by the absence of great differences in the pollution levels of these sites.
The purpose of this study is to set up the analytical method of new persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as chlordecone, endosulfan, ${\alpha}$-HCH, ${\beta}$-HCH, ${\gamma}$-HCH. The analytical methods for these compounds listed as new POPs by the Stockholm Convention need to be newly established. Therefore, we proposed the analytical method for 5 organic chlorinated pesticides (OCPs) and then applied the analytical method to environmental samples. To do this, the pre-treatment such as florisil and activated carbon cleanup process in the Korean official method for classic POPs had been reviewed. All of compounds except chlordecone were pre-treated simultaneously with reviewed cleanup process and detected by GC/MS and HRGC/HRMS respectively. There is a problem that chlordecone could not get a high sensitivity by GC analysis, but in this study GC/MS method was proposed.
