The importance of chloride ions in the corrosion of steel in concrete has led to the concept for chloride threshold level (CTL). The CTL can be defined as the content of chlorides at the steel depth that is necessary to sustain local passive film breakdown and hence initiate the corrosion process. Despite the importance of the CTL, due to the uncertainty determining the actual limits in various environments for chloride-induced corrosion, conservative values such as 0.4% by weight of cement or 1.2 kg in 1 $m^3$ concrete have been used in predicting the corrosion-free service life of reinforced concrete structures. The paper studies the CTL for blended cement concrete by comparing the resistance of cementitious binder to the onset of chloride-induced corrosion of steel. Mortar specimens were cast with centrally located steel rebar of 10 mm in diameter using cementitious mortars with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and mixed mortars replaced with 30% pulverized fuel ash (PFA), 60% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and 10% silica fume (SF), respectively, at 0.4 of a free W/B ratio. Chlorides were admixed in mixing water ranging 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% by weight of binder(Based on $C1^-$). Specimens were curd 28 days at the room temperature, wrapped in polyethylene film to avoid leaching out of chloride and hydroxyl ions. Then the corrosion rate was measured using the polarization resistance method and the order of CTL for binder was determined. Thus, CTL of OPC, 60%GGBS, 30%PFA and 10%SF were determined by 1.6%, 0.45%, 0.8% and 2.15%, respectively.
Two different carbazolylnitrostilbene chromophores with second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) activity were newly synthesized by the reaction of 9-(2-hydroxyethyl)-9H-carbazol-3-carbaldehyde with 4-nitrophenylacetonitrile or 4-nitrophenylacetic acid. The NLO monomers were obtained by reaction of these chromophores with methacryloyl chloride. The side-chain nonlinear optical polymers were synthesized by the copolymerization of NLO monomer with methylmethacrylate using a free radical initiator. The chemical structures of the polymers were identified by spectroscopic means and the polymer properties such as molecular weight, Tg, solubility, UV-visible absorption, and second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients were investigated.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars(EMMs) using ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS) and alkali activators. The hardener-free EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% using 4 types of alkali activators were prepared with various polymer-binder ratios, and tested for strengths, water absorption, carbonation depth, chloride ion and H2SO4 penetration depth. The conclusions obtained from the test results are summarized as follows: The compressive strength of the EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% attains a maximum at a polymer-binder ratio of 10%. The flexural strength of the hardener-free EMMs using Ca(OH)2 as a alkali activator is improved with increasing polymer-binder ratios. However, the flexural strength of the EMMs using NaCO3, Na2SO4 and Li2CO3 is gradually decreased with increasing polymer-binder ratios. Regardless of the type of alkali activator, the water absorption, chloride ion penetration and carbonation depth are remarkably decreased with increasing polymer-binder ratios due to the epoxy film formed in the EMMs. The H2SO4 penetration depth of the hardener-free EMMs with a GGBFS content of 20% is gradually increased with increasing polymer-binder ratio. In this study, the properties of hardener-free EMMs using Ca(OH)2 as a alkali activator are more excellent than those of other alkali activators.
This study was carried out to investigate influencing factors of bisphenol A(BPA) removal characteristic in conventional water treatment systems to be connected with coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. The result are summarized as follows; In BPA removal, optimal doses of PAC, alum, ferric chloride were 7.5 mg Al/L, 10.0 mg AI/L, 15.0 mg Fek. PAC was most effective coagulant to remove BPA. In coagulation process, BPA removal efficiency were increased about 2% by adjusting pH of raw water as 6. At temperature rise 1$0^{\circ}C$, BPA removal efficiency were increased 0.94%. but BPA removal efficiency in sand filtration process were under 1 %ie, so that BPA was almost not removed. At free chlorine dose 1, 2 mg/L, the reaction rate constant k in the BPA removal have been calculated to be 0.397, 0.953 min$^{-1}$ . At free chlorine dose 1, 2 mg/1-, degradation reaction of BPA was completed during 10 min and BFA removal efficiencies were 97.66, 99.99% at this time.

Silk fibroin (SF) was dissolved in calcium chloride/ethanol/water mixture(1/2/8 in mole ratio) at $70^{\circ}C$ for 4h. The dissolved silk fibroin was regenerated by casting the dialyzed solution into films. The films were treated with 50% aqueous solution of methanol for different times, and their antithrombogenicity was evaluated by in vivo tests. In vivo blood tests were made by a method of peripheral vein indwelling suture. It was found that the silk fibroin had a good antithrombogenicity and an absorbability even though the polymer showed foreign body reaction. Finally, the blood compatibilty of silk fibroin films which were subjected to structural change by the methoanl treatment, was examined in connection with their interfacial surface energy, and a correlation between these properties was found to be present.
In this report, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cytotoxic effects of the water extracts of Pini Resina, which has been as an additive to oral hygienic products together with sodium chloride in community, were investigated. The water extracts of Pini Resina, pretreated Pini Resina and Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina all showed relatively low cytotoxicity. All samples showed concentration-dependent increase in electron-donating capacity to DPPH, especially, Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina was the highest in the extent. Arachidonic acid release from the cell membrane was significantly inhibited by the presence of the samples above, among those, Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina was the most effective in the inhibitory action of the release.

A series of bis and tris-indolylketones and meridianin alkaloids are prepared by one pot Michael reaction of indole and ketene S,S-acetals under solvent-free condition using mild Lewis acid $InCl_3$.
The kinetic studies on the reactions of ethyl methyl (2) and ethyl propyl (4) chlorothiophosphates with X-pyridines have been carried out in acetonitrile at $35.0^{\circ}C$. The free energy correlations with X show biphasic concave upwards with a break point at X = H (2) and 3-Ph (4), respectively. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting leaving group expulsion from the intermediate is proposed based on the magnitudes of selectivity parameters for both substrates. The considerably large values of ${\beta}_X$ = 1.50(2) and 1.44(4) with strongly basic pyridines and relatively small values of ${\beta}_X$ = 0.43(2) and 0.36(4) with weakly basic pyridines are interpreted as a change of the attacking direction of the X-pyridines from a frontside to a backside attack toward the chloride leaving group.
Acetylsalicylic acid, administered intravenously in a dose of 120 mg+250 mg/h, markedly decreased the urinary excretion of sodium and chloride, and slightly depressed potassium excretion, so that the ratio of urinary concentrations of potassium to sodium increased after ASA. Osmolar and free water clearances also diminished during water diuresis, and free water reabsorption $(T^cH_2O)$ decreased after ASA during mannitol diuresis. Glomerular filtration rate and urine flow rate changed little. When infused directly into a renal artery, ASA exhibited identical action on both kidneys, indicating that the renotropic action is mediated by some endogenous humoral agents or by some metabolites of ASA. A dose of 100 mg i.v. of spironolactone, a aldosterone antagonist, slightly reversed the renal reflect when given during maximum action of ASA. Ethacrynic acid could display its full diuretic action unhindered during maximum ASA action. Above observations lead to the suggestion that acetylsalicylic acid might release aldosterone and the action on electrolyte excretion may be mediated by the mineralocorticoid.
The production of reactive oxygen species on addition of hexavalent chromium (potassium dichromate, $K_2Cr_2O_7$ ) to lung cells in culture was studied using flow cytometer analysis. A Coulter Epics Profile flow cytometer was used to detect the formation of reactive oxygen species after $K_2Cr_2O_7$ was added to A549 cells grown to confluence. The cells were loaded with the dye, 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate, after which cellular esterases removed the acetate groups and the dye was trapped intracellularly. Reactive oxygen species oxidized the dye, with resultant fluorescence. Increased doses of Cr(VI) caused increasing fluorescence (10-fold higher than background at 200 gM). Addition of Cr(III) compounds, as the picolinate or chloride, caused no increased fluorescence. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic studies indicated that three (as yet unidentified) spectral "signals" of the free radical type were formed on addition of 20, 50, 100 and 200 gM Cr(VI) to the A549 cells in suspension. Two other EPR 'signals" with the characteristics of Cr(V) entities were seen at field values lower than the standard free radical value. radical value.
