Effect of Glycols and Catalysts on Cotton Fabrics Treated with Glyoxal

  • The optimum conditions for durable press treatment of cotton fabrics using glyoxal as a nonformaldehyde crosslinking agent were investigated. Crosslinking reaction was conducted in the presence of different catalysts such as aluminum sulfate, magnesium chloride, or magnesium chloride-citric acid mixture at various mole ratios of catalyst to glyoxal. Aluminum sulfate was proven the most effective one among those used. Glycol addition into a glyoxal padding bath increased the wrinkle recovery angle(WRA) and whiteness of treated fabrics. The optimum mole ratio of glycol to glyoxal was 1:1. Diethylene glycol addition produced better overall performance to the glyoxal-crosslinked fabric compared to ethylene glycol addition.

  • 5-Alkyl-2(3H)-benzofuranones(3a-e) were prepared from Friedel-Crafts reaction of 4-alkylphenols with methyl 2-chloro-2-(methylthio)acetae(1) followed by the treatment of zinc du st-acetic acid. The reaction of disubstituted phenols with 1 in the presence of stannic chloride afforded 3-methyltWa-2(3H)-benzofuranone derivatives(11a-c), which were readily converted into 2(3H)-benzofuranone derivatives(12a-c) by desulfurization with zinc dust-acetic acid.

  • Factors affecting thermal inactivation and reactivation of korean radish peroxidase were inves-tigated,. The enzyme was stable below pH4.0 and above pH 8.0 The thermostablity of the enzyme was increased by addition of glucose sodium chloride and albuminl The inactivated enzyme by heat treatment was reactivated at room temperaturem The optimal pH for reactivation of the enzyme was pH of 9.0 The reactivation rate of the enyme was not afected by addition of glucose sodium chloride and albumin, The reactivation was completely inhibited by addition of sulfhydryl reagent such as dithiothreitol.

  • The possibility of removal of PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) in soil was studied using biological method. The effects of soil and co-substrate on both PCBs reduction rate and chloride ion concentration in soil were investigated. It was shown that PCBs concentration of all the soils used in this study were reduced from 5ppm to below 1ppm after 60days, also chloride ion concentration in slurry increased, Results showed that leaf mold and humic acid as co-substrate do not seem to be effective for biological treatment of PCBs in soil,

  • Woohwangchungsim-Won has been widely used for the treatment of appoplexy, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, insomnia and cerebrovascular accident, etc in oriental hospital and pharmacy. In order to investigate the efficacy of Woohwangchungsim-Won, the water extract of it were bioassayed for isolated ileum, blood vessels, blood pressure, heart and diuresis. The results of this studies were as follows; Spontaneous motilities of isolated ileum of mice were strongly suppressed, and contraction of isolated ileum of mice and guinea-pigs induced by acetylcholine chloride, barium chloride and histamine were inhibited. Vaso-dilating action due to vascular smooth muscle relaxation in frogs and rabbits, and hypotensive action in anesthetized rabbits were noted. Negative inotropic action on the isolated frog heart and diuretic effect in rabbits were shown.

  • The way of prevention for the continuous corrosion progress in iron antiquities after excavation and conservation treatment have been studied. The corrosion occuring have been found the oxidation of ferrous ions in the presence of chloride. The consideration to control the activity of chloride is important of controling relative humidity for the stable environment of the storage. One of the method that keeps archeological iron antiquities recommend the storage of special vinyl film(poly-vinyl alcohol film) with silica gel to control the relative humidity. Although this method is not permanent, it's very well efficiency of economy and convenience at present.

  • An efficient synthesis of 5-chloro-3-[4-(3-diethylaminopropoxy)benzoyl]-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (8), a potent $\beta$-amyloid aggregation inhibitor, is described. 5-Chloro-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (3) was obtained by the one-pot synthesis of 4-chlorophenol with $\omega$(methylsulfinyl)-p-methoxyacetophenone (1) under Pummerer reaction conditions, and it was followed by the desulfurization of the resultant 5-chloro-3-methylthio-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (2e). Acylation of benzofuran 3 with 4-(3-bromopropoxy)benzoyl chloride (6) gave the ketone 7, which was converted into compound 8 by the treatment of diethylamine.

  • A series of some novel 2-[5-(substituted phenyl)-[1,3,4]oxadiazol-2-yl]-benzoxazoles were synthesized by using benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid on reaction with thionyl chloride in presence of ethanol solvent at room temperature gave benzoxazole-2-carbonyl chloride, which is turned into benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide on reaction with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol solvent under reflux. The subsequent treatment of benzoxazole-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide with an appropriate aromatic carboxylic acid in presence of polyphosparic acid under reflux afforded the title compounds. The chemical structures of the newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by their IR, $^1H$ NMR and Mass spectral data analysis. Further the compounds are used to find out their ability towards anti microbial and nematicidal activity.

  • Treatment with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution plays an important role to impart certain desirable properties - feel and luster on the surface of polyester fiber. In this process alkali wastewater contains disodium terephthalate, ethylene glycol (EG) and residual sodium hydroxide. In this paper we report a new method containing the pretreatments of derivatization with benzoyl chloride and solvent extraction using pentane. The calibration curve of EG determined by GC/MS-SIM shows a good linearity in the range of 0.1 to $25{\mu}g/mL$ having the standard deviation of ${\leq}8.7%$. The recovery and the detection limit of this method are 91.9-93.7% and $0.05{\mu}g/mL$ respectively.

  • Factors affecting thermostability of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) from potato were studied for the purpose of providing useful information for food processing operations. The enzyme was most stable at pH 7.0 and it was inhibited to 70% after heat treatment at 8$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 min. The z-value for the thermal inactivation of the PPO was 12.17$\pm$0.58$^{\circ}C$. The thermostability of the enzyme was reduced by addition of sodium chloride. And the activity was inhibited by addition of reducing reagents such as 2-mercaptoethanol and dithiothreitol.
