  • In the pyrochemcial process of spent nuclear fuel, it is necessary to separate rare earth nuclides from LiCl-KCl eutectic waste salt for radioactive waste reduction. This paper presents the phosphorylation of neodymium chloride in LiCl-KCl-NdCl3 system using Li3PO4-K3PO4 as a phosphorylation agent in a chemical reactor with pitched blade impellers. The phosphorylation test was performed changing operation temperature, stirring rate, and amount of phosphorylation agent. Neodymium chloride was effectively converted into neodymium phosphate (NdPO4). It was confirmed that more than 99 wt% of neodymium can be separated from LiCl-KCl-NdCl3 system using a phosphorylation method l

  • Currently, biofibers are used as a reinforcement in polymer composites for structural elements and construction materials instead of the synthetic fibers which cause environmental problems and are expensive. One of the chemicals with a pH close to neutral that can be potentially used as a modified fiber material is sodium chloride (NaCl). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of a composite board made from NaCl-treated kenaf fiber. A completely randomized design method was used with consideration of two factors: the content of NaCl in the treatment solution (1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt%) and the duration of immersion of fibers in the solution (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h). The NaCl treatment was conducted by soaking the fibers in the solution for different durations. The fibers were then rinsed with water until the pH of the water reached 7 and subsequently dried inside an oven at 80℃ for 6 h. Kenaf fiber and epoxy were mixed manually with the total loading of 20 wt% based on the dry weight of the fiber. Physical and mechanical properties of the fibers were then evaluated based on JIS A 5908 particleboard standards. The results showed that increasing NaCl content in the fiber treatment solution can increase the physical and mechanical properties of the composite board. The properties of fibers treated with 5 wt% NaCl for 3 h were superior with a modulus of elasticity of 2.085 GPa, modulus of rupture of 19.77 MPa, internal bonding of 1.8 MPa, thickness swelling of 3%, and water absorption of 10.9%. The contact angle of untreated kenaf fibers was 104°, which increased to 80° and 73° on treatment with 1 wt% and 5 wt% NaCl for 3 h, respectively.

  • Heavy metals which are present as trace elements in human body have been known to modify various enzymatic reaction. These metals can be essential or non-essential. Zinc, copper and calcium are essential in maintaining some biological processes, whereas non-essential metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury produce accumulatve toxic effect. Cadmium accumulated in pancreas can cause toxicity and damage of pancreatic cells, thereby influencing CHO metabolism. Lead compounds are known to produce toxic effects on the kidney, digestive system and brain fellowed by inhibition of activity of ${\rho}-aminolevulinic$ acid and biosynthesis of hemoproteins and cytochrome. Evidence has been accumulated that zinc not only acts as a cofactor in enzyme reaction but also prevents toxic effect induced by heavy metal such as copper and cadmium. To demonstrate the effect of heavy metals on pancreatic secretion, part of uncinate pancreas was taken and incubated in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer with heavy metals used. Additional treatment with CCK-OP was performed when needed. After incubation during different period of time, medium was analyzed for amylase activity using Bernfeld's method. The present study was attempted in order to elucidate the effect of several kinds of heavy metal on exocrine pancreatic secretion in vitro. The results obtained are as follows: 1) CCK-OP stimulated significantly amylase release from pancreatic fragments in vitro. 2) CCK-OP response of amylase release from pancreatic fragments was inhibited by treatmant with cadmium, especially high doses of cadmium. 3) CCK-OP response of amylase release from pancreatic fragments was inhibited when pretreated with $10^{-4}M$ copper chloride. 4) Lead chloride at the concentration of $10^{-3}M\;and\;10^{4}M$ stimulated the basal amylase release in vitro but CCK-OP response did not augment by lead chloride. 5) Zine chloride did not affect amylase release from pancreatic fragment in vitro. From the results mentioned above, it is suggested that CCK-OP response was inhibited it the amylase release from pancreatic fragments pretreated with cadmium and copper chloride.

  • Hypoxia is a common condition found in a wide range of solid tumors and is often associated with metastasis and poor clinical outcomes. In the present study, we found that HIF-$1{\alpha}$ was induced by cobalt chloride (500 ${\mu}M$) treatment on human lung cancer cells, A549 and H460, for 24 hr. However, cobalt chloride (500 ${\mu}M$) did not affect cell proliferation of A549 and H460 in 48 hr. Cobalt chloride (500 ${\mu}M$) additionally induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal-like transition (EMT) such as reduced E-cadherin expression and increased ${\alpha}$-SMA expression. These results were confirmed by immunofluorecence experiment in H460 cells. E-cadherin was localized on the outer cell membrane. However, when the cells were treated with 500 ${\mu}M$ cobalt chloride for 24 hr, diffuse E-cadherin staining was observed, characteristic of a migratory mesenchymal phenotype. We also found that cobalt chloride induced integrin ${\beta}3$ expression and FAK phosphorylation in human lung cancer cells using western blotting and FACS anlaysis. Our data suggest that integrin ${\beta}3$-induced FAK phosphorylation may be developed into target molecules for blocking tumor metastasis.

  • Eco-friendly processing using enzymes has been focused in textile industry in order to reduce environmental pollutions. This paper was suggested to hydrolyze non-cellulose, such as fats and waxes in cotton fabrics by lipase treatment. Enzymatic treatment conditions were controlled according to pH, temperature, enzyme concentration, and treatment time. The physical properties of the lipase-treated cotton fabrics were evaluated by measuring weight loss, moisture regain and dyeing properties. The surface morphology of lipase-treated cotton fabrics were observed by SEM. As a result, the optimum conditions for the lipase treatment were at pH 4.2, temperature 50$^{\circ}C$, concentration 50%, and treatment time 90 minutes. Calcium chloride and Triton X-100 were effective auxiliaries in lipase treatment.

  • Mechanical structures of military equipment have been mainly applied with black oxide coating due to the limitation of surface treatment thickness. However, the mechanical structures applied by the black oxide coating treatment is constantly being corroded by calcium chloride and humidity. Since this can cause serious problems in the operation of equipment, a review to improve surface treatment and corrosion resistance is required. Therefore, in this study, surface treatment methods that can enhance corrosion resistance were selected and corrosion resistance performance was verified through experiments describing harsh field conditions. Thus, applying a proven surface treatment method to future military equipment will prevent corrosion.

  • Three inherently chiral calix[4]arenes 3-5 were synthesized as racemate starting from the ethylation at 1.3-distal hydroxy groups of calix[4]arene 2 which has two phenyl groups at upper rim in AABB fashion, and then two remaining hydroxy groups were acetylated by treatment with acetyl chloride in the presence of NaH to produce calix[4]arene 4. Treatment of 4 with AlCl3 under Fries rearrangement conditions, only one acetyl group was rearranged to the para-position to afford calix[4]arene 5 with AABC substitution pattern at the upper rim of calix. The structure of chiral calix[4]arenes were confirmed based on NMR and massspectra.

  • The effect of ozone surface treatment of montmorillonite (MMT) was investigated in thermal stabilities of polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites. Sodium montmorillonite (Na$\^$+/-MMT) was organically modified with dodecylammonium chloride. The surface properties of MMT, including the specific surface area (S$\_$BET/), equilibrium spreading pressure ($\pi$$\_$e/), and London dispersive component (${\gamma}$s$\^$L/), were studied by the BET method with $N_2$ adsorption. Also, the thermal stabilities of the nanocomposites were investigated in DSC and TGA. As experimental results, $\pi$$\_$e/ and ${\gamma}$s$\^$L/ of the ozonized dodecylammonium chloride (DA-MK ( $O_3$)) were increased in about 1.7 and 3.5 mJ/ $m^2$, resulting from the increasing of the micropores. From the DSC results, it was found that the melting temperature and crystallization temperature of PP/DA-MK and PP/DA-MK ( $O_3$) were higher that those of pure PP. These results were explained that dodecylammonium chloride of nano-scale led to a nucleation effect for PP crystallization. Also, it was found that E$\_$t/ of the PP/DA-MK ( $O_3$) nanocomposies was increased within about 64 kJ/mol. These results were probably explained by the improvement of dispersivity of DA-MK ( $O_3$) in a PP matrix.
