Quantitative Analysis of Acylcarnitines and Amino Acids Using ESI-MS/MS (ESI-MS/MS를 이용한 아실카르니틴과 아미노산의 정량분석)

  • In this study, a new quantitative analytical method has been developed for the rapid determination of acylcarnitines and amino acids in human blood using electrospray ionization / tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). Acylarmitines and amino acids were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry after conversion to their butylesters through treatment with 3N butanolic hydrogen chloride. Acylcrnitines were analyzed using precursor 85 ion scan and alanine, valine, leucine/isoleucine, methionine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid were analyzed using neutral loss 102 scan, ornitine and citrulline were analyzed neutral loss 119 scan, glycine was analyzed using neutral loss 56 scan, arginine was analyzed using neutral loss 161 scan and argininosuccinic acid was analyzed product ion 459 scan. This method reduced sample preparation time compared to that with conventional amino acid analyzer and liquid chromatography, with high sensitivity and good reproducibility.

Experimental Investigation of Chloride Ion Penetration and Reinforcement Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete Member

  • This paper represents the experimental investigation of chloride penetration into plain concretes and reinforced concretes. The main objective of this work is to study the main influencing parameters affecting corrosion of steel in concrete. Plain cement concrete and reinforced cement concrete with different water-cement ratios and different cover depth were subjected to ponding test. Ponding of specimens were done for different periods into 10% NaCl solution. Depth of penetration of chloride solution into specimens was measured after ponding. Specimens were crushed and reinforcements were washed using $HNO_3$ solution and weight loss due to corrosion was calculated accordingly. There was a linear relationship between depth of penetration and water-cement ratio. It was also observed that, corrosion of reinforcing steel increases with chloride ponding period and with water-cement ratio. Corrosion of steel in concrete can be minimized by providing good quality concrete and sufficient concrete cover over the reinforcing bars. Water-cement ratio has to be low enough to slow down the penetration of chloride salts into concrete.

Source Identification of PM2.5 at the Tokchok Island on the Yellow Sea (황해상 덕적도 PM2.5오염원의 확인)

  • An air pollution monitoring station has been operated at Tokchok Island since April 1999 to characterize the background atmosphere in the vicinity of the Yellow Sea. In this study, eight chemical species in PM$_{2.5}$ and three gaseous species were analyzed. A total of 53 samples were collected for the analysis of PM$_{2.5}$ and gaseous species from April, 1999 to April, 2001. The overall mean mass concentration of PM$_{2.5}$ was 20.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ and the eight soluble ionic species accounted for about 46.8% of PM$_{2.5}$ mass. Approximately 80% of samples appeared to experience the chloride loss effect. Air pollutant sources of PM$_{2.5}$ measured at Tokchok Island were qualitatively identified by the principal component analysis. It was found that five principal components are secondary aerosol, soil, incineration, phase change of nitrate, and ocean.and ocean.

  • The corrosion behaviour of mild steel in phosphoric acid solution in the presence and absence of pollutants viz. Chloride, Fluoride and Sulfate ions at 302K-333K was studied using mass loss and potentiostatic polarization methods. The addition of chloride and sulfate ions inhibits the mild steel corrosion in phosphoric acid while fluoride ions stimulate it. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel indicated that inhibition of chloride and sulfate ions decreased with increasing temperature. The adsorption of these ions (Chloride and sulfate) on the mild steel surface in acid has been found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The values of activation energy (Ea) and free energy of adsorption ($\Delta$) indicated physical adsorption of these ions (chloride and sulfate) on the mild steel surface. The plot of $logW_{f}$ against time (days) at 302K gives a straight line, which suggested that it obeys first order kinetics and also calculate the rate constant k and half-life time $t_{1/2}$.

Study of Corrosion-Induced Failure Mechanisms of Epoxy Coated Reinforcing Steel (Parts I and II)

  • Epoxy coated reinforcing steels (ECRs) were acquired from ten sources and coatings from each source were initially characterized in terms of defects, thickness, solvent extraction weight loss and hardness. Testing involved exposure in three aqueous solutions at elevated temperature (8$0^{\circ}C$) and in chloride-contaminated concrete slabs under outdoor exposure, It was found that the density and size of coating defects was the promary factor affecting ECR performance. The equivalent circuit analysis using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data indicated that the impedance response for well-performing ECR specimens showed no signs of active degradation at the interface although diffusional processes similar to those noted for poorly performing bars occurred here. Experimental results also indicated a relationship between corrosion behavior and bar source. Weight loss upon solvent extraction correlated with impedance reduction from hot water exposure. Coating defects during most of the tests, especially in high pH solutions containing chloride ions. ECRs with excessive coating defects, either initially present or ones which developed in service, performed poorly in every test category regardless of source. Forms of coating failure were extensive rusting at defects, blistering, wet adhesion loss, cathodic delamination, underfilm corrosion and coating cracks.   • Twenty-six injectable drug products, many of which are administered by i.v. infusion, were studied for loss from aqueous solutions stored in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) infusion bags for various periods of time. The PVC infusion bags were stored in the dark room at room temperature for up to one month. Drugs stored in glass bottle served as controls. The solutions were assayed Spectrophotometrically at regular intervals. The effect of drug concentration and pH on the loss of drug from solution were studied. Octanol-water partition coefficients were used as a guage of lipid solubility of drugs. The elution of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHT) from PVC infusion bags was studied. For most of the drug studied, minimal loss from the aqueous solutions were observed over periods of storage time. Six of the drug products - Thiopental sodium, Hydralazine HCl, Thioridazine HCl, Trifluoperazine 2HCl, Metronidazole, Chlorpromazine HCl - were found to be lost a substantial extent. DEHP was found to be migrating from PVC infusion bags.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcment is the most significant factor of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Chloride ion is considered one of the most common culprits in the corrosion of steel in concrete. It breaks down the passive film and allows the steel to corrode actively at a high rate. The main objective of this study is to determine the critical chloride ion concentrations in the pore solutions and chloride binding effect of cement pastes made with and without fly ash. Cement pastes with water-binder ratio of 0.5, allowed to hydrate in sealed containers for 28 days and to express pore solution. The expressed pore fluids were analyzed for chloride and hydroxyl ion concentrations. Evaporable water on paralled specimens was determined a.s the loss of weight per 100g of unhydreded cement when the specimens were heated to constant weight at 105'C. It was found that the replaced cement with fly ash has negligible influnce on the chloride binding and chloride binding capacity and rises the $Cl^-$ /$OH^-$ ratio in pore solution.

Power spectral density method performance in detecting damages by chloride attack on coastal RC bridge

  • The deterioration caused by chloride penetration and carbonation plays a significant role in a concrete structure in a marine environment. The chloride corrosion in some marine concrete structures is invisible but can be dangerous in a sudden collapse. Therefore, as a novelty, this research investigates the ability of a non-destructive damage detection method named the Power Spectral Density (PSD) to diagnose damages caused only by chloride ions in concrete structures. Furthermore, the accuracy of this method in estimating the amount of annual damage caused by chloride in various parts and positions exposed to seawater was investigated. For this purpose, the RC Arosa bridge in Spain, which connects the island to the mainland via seawater, was numerically modeled and analyzed. As the first step, each element's bridge position was calculated, along with the chloride corrosion percentage in the reinforcements. The next step predicted the existence, location, and timing of damage to the entire concrete part of the bridge based on the amount of rebar corrosion each year. The PSD method was used to monitor the annual loss of reinforcement cross-section area, changes in dynamic characteristics such as stiffness and mass, and each year of the bridge structure's life using sensitivity equations and the linear least squares algorithm. This study showed that using different approaches to the PSD method based on rebar chloride corrosion and assuming 10% errors in software analysis can help predict the location and almost exact amount of damage zones over time.

  • In order to investigate the electrical properties for transformer oils which contains a pure sodium chloride, the dielectric properties is made researches. This experiments for measuring the dielectric loss is performed at $20{\sim}120[^{\circ}C]$ in the temperature range, $30{\sim}1.5{\times}10^5[Hz}$ in the frequency range and $300{\sim}1500[mV]$ in the voltage range. The result of experiment for the movement of carrier and the physical constants to contribute dielectric properties of specimen with a pure sodium chloride.

  • In order to investigate the electrical properties for transformer oils which contains a Pure sodium chloride, the dielectric properties is made researches. To measure the dielectric loss of specimen, a coaxial cylindrical liquid electrode is used, and its geometric capacitance is confirmed to 16[pF]. And the dielectric dissipation factor, tan$\delta$, is measured by using the Video Bridge 2150. The thermal static oven with an automatically static temperature controller is used so as to support specific temperature to the specimen. This experiments for measuring the dielectric lass is performed at 20-120[$^{\circ}C$] in the temperature range, 30∼1.5x10$\^$5/[Hz] in the frequency range and 300∼1500[mV] in the voltage range. The result of experiment for the movement of carrier and the physical constants to contribute dielectric properties of specimen with a pure sodium chloride.
