In this study, aiming to investigate the effects of sulfate attack on cement stabilized highly plastic clay; an experimental study was carried out considering the effects of cement type, sulfate type and its concentration, cement content and curing period. Unconfined compressive strength and chloride-ion penetration tests were performed to obtain strength and permeability characteristics of specimens cured under different conditions. Test results were evaluated along with microstructural investigations including SEM and EDS analyses. Results revealed that use of sulfate resistance cement instead of normal portland cement is more plausible for soils under the threat of sulfate attack. Besides, it was verified that sulfate concentration is responsible for strength loss and permeability increase in cement stabilized montmorillonite. Finally, empirical equations were proposed to estimate the unconfined compressive strength of cement stabilized montmorillonite, which was exposed to sulfate attack for 28 days.

To estimate durability of reinforced concrete structures located in or nearby seawater, many different kinds of accelerated tests for evaluation of chloride ion permeation in concrete were proposed. At present the only standardized test is the ASTM C 1202(RCP test). This test method is used to estimate the concrete's resistivity of the chloride penetration in concrete by using the total charges passed and sometimes used to calculate the chloride diffusion coefficients. However, this test may lead to an erroneous chloride diffusion coefficient. So this test method was compared with the modified Dhir's test and the traditional concentration diffusion test. Experimental results showed that the diffusion coefficients determined the RCP test and the PD Index gave wrongous values, but the diffusion coefficient acquired by considering a migration term was nearly the same to the CD Test.

This study investigates the effect of layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the healing performance of self-healing concrete by assessing the chloride penetration resistance of self-healing cement mortars using electrical chloride ion migration-diffusion test. Test results show that both mortars containing healing materials only and mortars containing healing materials and Ca-Al LDH together mostly had higher migration-diffusion coefficients right after cracking, but the migration-diffusion coefficients decreased more than that of OPC with increasing healing ages, and thus, they yielded higher healing capacities than OPC. Also, mortars containing Ca-Al LDH together with healing materials showed higher reduction of their migration-diffusion coefficients, and thus, higher healing capacities than mortars containing healing materials only. This suggests that as the self-healing product increases on the crack surface, the binding of chloride ions by LDH inside the crack increases.

This paper investigates the effect of the concrete containing mineral admixtures(pozzolanic materials such as fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fume and meta kaolin) on the resistance properties to chloride ion invasion. The purposed testing procedure was applied to the concrete replaced mineral admixtures for 3${\~}$4 replacement ratios under water-binder ratios ranged from 0.40 to 0.55. For the electro-migration test, Tang and Nilsson's method was used to estimate the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion. As a results, the water-binder ratios, kinds of mineral admixtures and replacement ratios, water curing periods had a great effect on the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and the optimal replacement ratios had a limitation for each mineral admixtures. Also, the use of mineral admixtures by mass(replacement of OPC) enhance the resistance ability against chloride penetration compared with the plain concrete. The compressive strength was shown related to the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, the compressive strength increases with the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion decreasing. Below the 50 MPa, the variation of diffusion coefficient of concrete replaced mineral admixtures was bigger than that of plain concrete.

Salt attack is one of the serious deterioration factor with respect to the durability of concrete structure. Especially, in case of exposed rebar concrete structure in marine environment, corrosion of rebar is accelerated by penetration of $Cl^-$ from exterior. Through this path, volume of corroded rebar is increased about two and half times due to increased inner pressure originated from rust. As a consequence, the overall deterioration of concrete structure, namely, cracks, reduction of adhesive strength and pop-out is followed. In this paper, the effect of structure treatment of concrete on chloride resistance has been investigated. At the same time, the relationship among several characteristics, such as resistance to chloride, water absorption coefficient and surface hardness of concrete has been investigated. It is believed that surface performance improvement by the application of penetrative hardening agent influences on positively water absorption coefficient, surface hardness of concrete and resistance to chloride ion penetration.

The use of ternary blended cement consisting of Portland cement, granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash has been on the rise to improve marine concrete structure's resistance to chloride attack. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate changes in chloride attack resistibility of concrete through NT Build 492-based chloride migration experiments and test of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration under ASTM C 1202(KS F 2271) when 1.5-2.0% of alkali-sulfate activator (modified alkali sulfate type) was added to the ternary blended cement mixtures (40% ordinary Portland cement + 40% GGBFS + 20% fly ash). Then, the results found the followings: Even though the slump for the plain concrete slightly declined depending on the use of the alkali-sulfate activator, compressive strength from day 2 to day 7 improved by 17-42%. In addition, the coefficient from non-steady-state migration experiments for the plain concrete measured at day 28 decreased by 36-56% depending on the use of alkali-sulfate. Furthermore, total charge passed according to the test for electrical indication of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration decreased by 33-62% at day 7 and by 31-48% at day 28. As confirmed in previous studies, reactivity in the GGBFS and fly ash improved because of alkali activation. As a result, concrete strength increased due to reduced total porosity.

PURPOSES : Infiltration of moisture, polluted material, and deicer into concrete, accompanied by freeze and thaw can cause significant deterioration of concrete pavement. In order to protect concrete from deterioration, it is necessary to prevent the infiltration of these concrete external materials. The moisture-repellent agent, which is a surface treatment and maintenance material added to concrete structures to render them water resistant, has advantages such as prevention of water infiltration and security against air permeation. Nano-coat, which is referred to as silicon hydride, is typically used as a moisture-repellent agent. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to use penetration-type Nano-coat as an alternative in order to evaluate its applicability through environmental resistance tests. METHODS : This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat, which can provide water repellency to concrete, in concrete pavements, through various environmental resistance tests such as freezing and thawing resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and surface scaling resistance tests. The applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat was demonstrated based on the specification of KS F 2711, KS F 2456, and ASTM C 672. RESULTS :In the case of penetration-type Nano-coat applied on sound concrete, an increase in concrete durability was demonstrated by the negligible chloride ion penetrability and the absence of scaling, as revealed by visual observation of the surface, after 50 cycles of scaling resistance test. In addition, test result of the application of penetration-type Nano-coat on deteriorated concrete established that concrete surface pretreated by grinding provided improved durability than non-treated concrete. CONCLUSIONS :This study indicates that penetration-type Nano-coat is applicable as an effective alternative, to increase the durability of concrete structures. In addition, it was known that pretreatment of deteriorated concrete surface, such as grinding, is required to improve the long-term performance of concrete pavement.
Recently, the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

The purpose of this study evaluates possibilities of waste phosphogypsum into concerts by steam curing admixture. The waste phosphogypsum is made use of 4 forms(Dehydrate, $\beta$-Hemihydrate, III-Anhydrite and II-Anhydrite) which were changed to in low temperature of calcination. The penetration depth and compressive strength of cement mortar are investigated to evaluate the chloride ion and carbonation resistance. As a result, chloride ion and carbonation resistance of cement mortar admixed with waste phosphogypsum are more excellent than cement mortar contained OPC alone. The internal pores of cement mortar are decreased by using waste phosphogypsum, because the hydrates of ettringite which is denesified in structure is much formed in early ages at steam curing. These densified effect is concluded with improving the resistance to attack of cement mortar including waste phospogypsum.
