  • The continuous chip in turning operation deteriorates precision of workpiece and causes a hazardous condition to operator. Thus the chip form control becomes a very important task for reliable machining process. So, grooved chip breaker is widely used to obtain reliable discontinuous chip. However, developing new cutting insert having chip breaker takes long time and needs lots of research expense due to a couple of processes such as forming, sintering, grinding and coating of product and many different evaluation tests. In this paper, performance of commercial chip breaker is evaluated with neural network which is learned with a back propagation algorithm. For the evaluation, several important elements(depth of cut, land, breadth, radius) which directly influence the chip formation were chosen among commercial chip breakers and were used as input values of neural network. With the results of these input values, the performance evaluation method was developed and applied that method to the commercial tools.

  • The effects of cutting condition and tempering temperature for the shape of cutting chip were investigated. For this purpose, a lead-free brass containing 1wt.% of Bi extruded at $750^{\circ}C$ in straight turning was used in this study. The cutting chip preferred was mainly found to be loose form of arc chips with curling discontinuity, and these were formed by shear fracture. However, some of fragmental element chip were found to be mixed when tempering temperature was as high as $500^{\circ}C$. The form and size of chip was more affected by feed rate than by tempering temperature and cutting rate. In addition, the cutting surface was observed to be formed more rough in the case of high feed rate and low cutting rate compared to low feed rate and high cutting rate.

  • One of the parameters that influence the productivity of every industry, involved in metal cutting, is the chip from ; continuous or broken chip. Chip form varies according to machining conditions, material used, tool geometry and chip breaker geometry. Therefore, in this study we carried out the experiment on the chip control in machining STS304 using an attached obstruction type chip breaker. Namely, with the change of a chip breaker distance, chip breaker angle, cutting characteristics in machining STS304 which is well-known as a machining difficult material and produces a saw-toothed chip. The results of the experiment are as follows : 1. The chip breaker distance and angle under which the preferred chip is produced, show 1.5mm and 60 .deg. , while chip breaker angle in machining an ordinary steel was well-known 45 .deg. . 2. During the cutting process, the change of feed than the change of velocity was applied as cutting conditions, effects more clearly on the chip breaking. 3. Considering a whole surface roughness, it is not advisable to apply chip breaker mentioned above for precision cutting.

  • A fully integrated small form-factor HBT power amplifier (PA) was developed for UMTS Tx applications. For practical use, the PA was implemented with a well configured bottom dimension, and a CMOS control IC was added to enable/disable the HBT PA. By using helix-on-pad integrated passive device output matching, a chip-stacking technique in the assembly of the CMOS IC, and embedding of the bulky inductive lines in a multilayer substrate, the module size was greatly reduced to 2 mm ${\times}$ 2.2 mm. A stage-bypass technique was used to enhance the efficiency of the PA. The PA showed a low idle current of about 20 mA and a PAE of about15% at an output power of 16 dBm, while showing good linearity over the entire operating power range.

  • In this research,we suggest a virtual machining system that can simulate sutting forces at the stage of design. Cutting forces, here, are modeled form the machanistic model of the ball end milling. To this end, we need undeformed chip thickness which is used for calculating chip load. It is derived form the z-map data of a CAD model. That is, chip load is the height difference between the cutting tool contact point and the workpiece at arbitrary position. The tool contact point is referred from the cutter location. Form the experimental verification, we can simulate machining process effectively to the slot and the side cutting of ball end mill.

  • IC chip layout pattern recognition algorithms using image processing techniques are being developed for the automation of manufacturing and inspecting chips. Recognitioin of chip pattern requires feature extraction from nach rrame of chip image adn needs to match the feature data through all frames. In this paper, vertex position and form having layout information are extracted by the feature straightening algorithm, and global coordinates of layout pattern are extracted by the feature straightening algorithm, and global coordinates of layout pattern are obtainnd by vertex form matching from the overlapped area of neighbour frame.

  • Chip control is a major problem in automatic machining process, especially in finish operation. Chip breaker is one of the important factors to be determined for the scheme of chip control. As unbroken chips are grown, there deteriorate quality of the surface roughness and process automation can be carried out. In this study, to get rid of chip curling problem while turning internal hole, optimal chip breaker is selected form the experiment. The experiment is planned with Taguchi's method that is based on the orthogonal arrary of design factor. From the respose table, cutting speed, feedrate, depth of cut, and tool geometry are major factors affecting chip formation. Then, optmal chip breaker is selected and this is verified good enough for chip control from the experiment.

  • The machining process on be considered as a planned interaction of the workpiece, the tool and the machine tool. In an unmanned situation, the results of this interaction are to be continuously monitored so that any changes in the machining environment on be sensed to corrective actions. In order to design the process monitoring system for unmanned manufacturing, the identification of chip formation is proposed. The system proposes the method of using acoustic emission(AE) signal analysis to identify the chip formation during cutting.

  • In this study, geometrical similarity conditions for drills of various diameters are discussed. The effect of geometrical similarity on the chip shape and forces of different sized conventional drills has been experimentally confirmed. Drilling tests are carried out for SM45C by using the conventional HSS drills. The torque and thrust forces are measured and compared with those chip forms. Chip shape in drilling are affected by three factors being flow angle, side and up curl of the chip. It is found that the feedrate and drill diameter are more affected than cutting speed on the chip form and cutting forces. The similarity conditions gives easily to estimate the chip shape, the thrust and the torque for drills of different diameters.
