Objective: This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the prevalence of orthodontic problems and the proportion of patients who underwent orthodontic diagnosis among children aged 6 (n = 300), 7 (n = 400), and 8 (n = 400) years who had undergone panoramic radiography. Methods: Children were divided into five groups according to their chief complaint and consultation: conservative dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics). Chief complaints investigated included first molar eruption, lack of space for incisor eruption, frequency of eruption problems, lack of space, impaction, supernumerary teeth (SNT), missing teeth, and ectropion eruption. The number of patients whose chief complaint was not related to orthodontics but had dental problems requiring orthodontic treatment was counted. The proportion of patients with orthodontic problems who received an orthodontic diagnosis was also examined. Results: Dental trauma and SNT were the most frequent chief complaints among the children. The proportion of patients with orthodontic problems increased with age. However, the orthodontic diagnosis rates based on panoramic radiographs among children aged 6, 7, 8 years were only 1.5% (6 years) and 23% (7 and 8 years). Conclusions: Accurate information should be provided to patient caregivers to correct misconceptions regarding the appropriateness of delaying orthodontic examination until permanent dentition is established.
The purpose of this study was to identify how characteristics of young children (sex, age, birth order, temperament), parents (education level, employed or unemployed mother, mother's parenting behavior), and family (income) relate to young children's stress levels and to examine the relative effects of these variables on young children's stress. The subjects for this study were 287 young children, aged from 3 to 5 years old, selected from kindergartens and day-care centers in Busan. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression. The results were as follows. (1) Young children's stress was correlated with young children's sex, age, birth order and temperament. (2) Young children's stress was correlated with parenting behaviors. (3) Young children's stress was not correlated with income. (4) Children's emotionality and maternal overprotective behavior were the most significant variables affecting the stress experienced by boys and girls, respectively. (5) Maternal overprotective behavior variable affected both sibling and only children's stress.
This study was conducted to investigate the dietary habits and assess the dietary intake of preschool children. Food habit, preference and nutritional supplement status were investigated using a questionnaire answered by the mothers of 453 subjects aged 3 to 6 years old. Also, a dietary intake survey using a 24-hour recall method was performed by mothers of the children. It was found that 81.2% of subjects had milk, dairy products, cookies, fruit and bread between meals once or twice per day. As well, 60.3% of subjects had an unbalanced diet and 20.7% had an overeating habit. Thus, unbalanced diet was a serious problem for many of the subjects. Due to weight controls, digestion problems and allergies, 11.7% of subjects had special dietary consideration. And 26.4% of subjects were using nutritional supplements. From the 24-recall survey, it was found that all nutrient intakes were higher than the Korean RDA except calcium and vitamin A. Nutrient intakes for protein, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin B2 were significantly different by sex, and also increased with age but not significantly. Children received 35% of daily energy, 44% of daily fat and 52% of daily calcium from snacks, so snacks clearly play an important role in dietary intake. The average number of foods consumed per day by subjects was 17.6 and that dishes was 11.0. Most children consumed 4 or 5 food groups per day. In conclusion, the dietary intake of children aged 3 to 6 were deemed adequate judging from nutrient intake and dietary diversity. More attention should be paid to the nutritional value of snacks in this age group.
This research was performed to screen eye health status for pre-school children (4~5 age) and establish as eye health checking system m community health center. This data was collected from 1st February, 1995 to 31st October, 1995. To screen the state of their vision, the Developed Visuual Test (D.V.T) was used for pre-school children. This is used at home by their parents and then it is also used among the kindergarten health team at Jung-gu health center in Seoul. This was done with the and of Randot and Han Choun Souk tests. The total number of children who were tested was 1441. Among the children, children aged 5 were 707, and those aged 4 were 734. The results of this study were as follows; * Description of the health status for the pre-school children. 1. The rate of children average vision in both eyes, whose was below 05 by Han Choun Souk are 7.6% (age 4) and 4.8% (age 5). 2. Only 20 4% (age 5) and 30 8% (age 4) of the pre-school children had been tested through the ophthalmic department. 3. The children with a level below 05 (Han Choun Souk test) had been tested only 43% (age 4), and 12% (age 5) 4. There was no particular difficulty in understanding the D.Y.T: 13.9% (age 4), 11.6% (age 5) of the tested children had eye problems. 5. 231 cases were trichiasis, entropin, strabismus, and amblyopia. * The different visual tests. The results of the visual tests between the two groups (parents and health teams) are similar and it shows that parents can easily test at home. * Delivery system of the D.V.T questionnaire The way children's parents received the D.V.T questionnaire were carried out by two ways By mall from the community health center. Send through the institution, for example the kindergarten school The receipt rate of this D.V.T questionnaire sent through the institution was higher than sent by mall.

The purpose of this study is to confirm the use of smartphones by children aged 3 to 5 years old and to propose a plan for prevention of overdependence. To this end, the data of 909 people aged 3 to 5 years old were used in the study from the raw data of the '2019 Smartphone Overdependence Survey' conducted by the National Information Society Agency. The research results are as follows : Infants aged 3 to 5 were using their smartphone for an average of more than an hour a day, it was found that smartphones were used in the order of video services and games, listening to music, educational contents and search services. Parents were found to be tolerant of their children's smartphone usage time and dependence. In particular, despite the fact that most infants and toddlers use smartphones to watch videos and use game content, they are not concerned. Therefore, parental education content for the use of smartphones by infants and toddlers needs to include comprehensive content on media use.
The purpose of this study was to find out conservation concept acquisition in children of pre-operational and concrete periods. The data in this study were obtained through experimental methods with 62 children(28 males and 34 females) of 3-11 ages in Korean rural areas. The Piagetian instruments devised by Gelman were used for the study ; length, liquid, quantity, mass, and volume conservation tasks. Percentile and $x^2$-test were applied for the statistical analysis of data: and the results of the experiment are as follows: 1) Most children aged 3-9 years did not appear to understand that the length of sticks stayed the same regardless of position. 2) In liquid quantity conservation, children centered their attentions on one aspect ; juice level or number of container. Their conservation concept was developed correlating with ages. 3) In the experiment of mass conservation by using play dough, only 7.1% of children of pre-operational period and 47.1% of concrete period affirmed that the amounts of play dough were same after changed shape. 4) In volume task, 29.4% children aged 7 to 11 years admitted to conservation. 5) It is found that girls acquired length conservation earlier than boys, while there was no significant difference between boys and girls in other conservation tasks.
The purpose of this study was to compare the nutritional status of children aged 5 or under and women aged 20 to 34 years between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (DPRK: North Korea). For the source of nutritional status of North Koreans, the DPRK 2004 Nutrition Assessment-Report of Survey Results was used. As the comparable data of South Koreans, the anthropometric data for children and women were obtained from the reports of the Korean Pediatric Society and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, respectively. The blood hemoglobin data of South Korean women were obtained from the data file of the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey and analyzed. In regard to the North Korea, the Prevalence of underweight (weight for age Z-score < -2.0) in children under 12 months was about $10\sim15%$, and thereafter progressively increased until 30 to 35 months reaching 30%. In South Korea, the prevalence of underweight was less than 3% in most age groups both in boys and girls. In North Korea, the prevalence of stunting (height for age Z-score < -2.0) reached 20% in children under 12 months and increased with age over the level of 50% in children aged 54 to 59 months. In South Korea, the prevalence of stunting was less than 3% in children under 12 months and was less than 10% throughout the age groups. Maternal protein-energy malnutrition and anemia were assessed for the women aged 20 to 34 years using mid-upper arm circumference (< 22.5 cm) and blood hemoglobin level (< 12g/DL), respectively. The prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition was 39.6%, 30.7%, 31.7% in North Korea and 12.5%, 5.0%, 1.5% in South Korea fir the women in $20\sim24,\;25\sim29,\;30\sim34$ years, respectively. The prevalence of anemia in the North Korean women was about $34\sim36%$ while that in the South Korean women was $15\sim18%$. In conclusion, the disparity of nutritional status in early childhood and maternity between South Korea and North Korea is so huge that active and well-planned nutrition support policy and programs for women and children in North Korea is imperative to prepare for the future unified nation.
Intestinal parasitic infections are a public health burden and a major cause of illness in developing countries. The diseases lead to various health threats, including growth retardation and mental health-related disorders, especially in children. We assessed the risk factors for intestinal parasitic infections among children aged 12-59 months residing in Nyamasheke District, Rwanda. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using secondary data from 1,048 children aged 12-59 months whose stool samples were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites and whose results were registered in the laboratory information system in 2020. The prevalence of intestinal parasites in children aged 12-59 months was 53.2%. The dominant parasites were Ascaris lumbricoides (13.1%), followed by Giardia lamblia (10.9%), Entamoeba histolytica (7.9%), Trichuris trichiura (6.5%), hookworms (1.7%), and Taenia species (1.4%). A significant association was observed between intestinal parasites and the literacy of mothers or children's caregivers (odds ratio (OR)=5.09, P<0.001). Children from farming households were 2.8-fold more likely to contract intestinal parasitic infections than those from nonfarming households (OR=2.8, P<0.001). A significant association was also observed between intestinal parasites and food safety (OR=4.9, P<0.001). Intestinal parasitic infections were significantly associated with hand hygiene practices after using the toilet and washing fresh fruits before eating (P<0.001). The information gathered will help public health providers and partners develop control plans in highly endemic areas in Rwanda.
The purpose of this study was to determined the rate of sensitization to food allergen in children with Atopic Dermatitis (AD) in Korea. A total of 3,783 patients (male = 1983, female = 1800) with AD (age under 18 years) who had visited Samsung Medical Center from 1998 to 2003 were enrolled in the study. Food hypersensitivity was measured by specific IgE to egg, cow's milk, soy, peanut, wheat, buckwheat, beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, crab, salmon, mackerel, etc. Specific IgE levels > 0.7 kU/L. by Captured Allergen Product (CAP) assay were considered positive. Chi-square test at p value < 0.05 was used to examine the difference of the prevalence by sex and age. The rate of sensitization to multiple food allergens was 31.2% and decreased with age. Hypersensitivity to egg showed highest prevalence, which was 24.3%, compared to the prevalence of other foods. High prevalence of hypersensitivity to milk. wheat, soy, peanut, crab or shrimp was observed (11.6- 17.7%). Low prevalence of hypersensitivity to beef, pork, tuna or chicken was observed (1.9-3.5%). Children aged under 3 years had significantly higher prevalence of hypersensitivity to egg, milk, soy and beef than children aged at least 3 years. Our results stress the need for examination of food hypersensitivity aimed at identified and limited each food allergen among children with AD caused by food to help patients outgrow their food allergy.
This study was designed to investigate and analyze children's preference on animation characters according to age and gender of the subjects, by surveying 255 children aged from 3 to 5. The animation characters were represented in pictures, and the reasons of preference were collected through individual interview with the children. The $x^2$ verification of SPSS 18.0 Window statistic program was used to verify the difference in preference. As a result, children aged from 3 to 5 showed higher preference on animations produced in foreign countries than the ones produced in Korea, as Korean animations and foreign-country animations had preference rate of 35.7% and 64.3%, and Korean characters and foreign-country characters had preference rate of 22.4% and 77.6% respectively. Depending on the age of children, there was significant difference among animation characters that the children prefer ($x^2=302.474^{***}$, P<.001), and it was shown that children at the age of 3 showed preference on 'Pororo' of Pororo the Little Penguin, children at the age of 4 on 'Tayo' of Tayo the Little Bus and 'Amu' of Shugo Chara, and children at the age of 5 on 'Shin Chan' of Crayon Shin Chan. It was also revealed that there was significant difference among animation characters according to the gender of children ($x^2=120.864^{***}$, P<.001); boys preferred 'Pororo' of Pororo the Little Penguin the most, followed by 'Doraemon' of Doraemon, 'Thomas' of Thomas and Friends and 'Tayo' of Tayo the Little Bus, and girls preferred 'Pororo' of Pororo the Little Penguin the most, followed by 'Apple' of Little Princess, 'Amu' of Shugo Chara and 'Loopy' of Pororo the Little Penguin. Through this study, it is hoped that the development of children animation would advance further, and that this study could be used as the preliminary resource.
